Administrative Assistant Appreciation Day By Christina Papa One aspect of college life many students take for granted is the wonderful secretaries at PSU Delco. Without them, Penn State Delco would not be able to function. Because of them, our records are processed, our transcripts are sent, our money is refunded, and almost every other type of “behind the scenes” paperwork is taken care of. And yet they always greet us with a smile. To thank the secretaries for all Delco’s Recycling Effort Off to a Productive Start By Audie Miller Recycling works! With only a small effort given so far, Penn State Delco has managed to recycle 4446 Ibs. of cardboard, 832 lbs. of aluminum, and 3754 lbs. of paper this semester. The maintenance department has placed over 30 bins for recycling throughout the campus. They are individually labeled for contents. Many of the bins were donated by Penn State Great Valley Campus, and therefore are “recycled” themselves. But, the campus as a whole is not doing its best to recycle all possible trash. The bins in the student lounges are being used, but maintenance is finding that many offices are not recycling everything. Apparently, not everyone is doing their part. Also, a lot of the trash is not being separated correctly. Because there may Delco Seizes (Continued from page 5) The one with the experience, of course. That is why it is so important to take advantage of internship opportunities now. Kenyatta also stresses the importance of keeping “contacts.” She has kept all the telephone numbers of people she has had contact with, and has found on more than one occasion that they have been helpful. “People who know people,” is how she put it. “You'll never know when you'll need them.” If you need help in writing your resume, or how to conduct yourself during an interview, Penn State has workshops available. A resume their hard work, the Penn State Delco management have invited them to lunch on April 22 at Pace One restaurant in honor of Secretaries Day. The management have been honoring the secretaries in similar ways for the past five to six years, according to Mrs. Diane Jankowski. Many students appreciate the friendly assistance they have received from the campus secretaries. “The Student Life secretaries were very patient with me when I needed to find not be a can bin around, for example, maintenance is finding that aluminum cans have been thrown in with other trash. “If campus wants to recycle, they should do it fully,” according to John McKnight, Security. All trash needs to be put in its proper place. The results of these efforts at expanded recycling is keeping the trash costs down. Penn State does not get monetary payment for recycled products, but the trash company deducts the value of recycled trash from the overall trash cost. So there is a benefit to the campus as well and to the environment. Overall, the campus is off to a good start in the recycling effort. More bins and a little extra effort can really help save the campus money and the world. Internships workshop will be held April 2 from: 12:30-1:30, and again on April 11 from 11:30-12:30. Then, on April 21, there will be an “Interview Skills” workshop. All workshops will be in room 205, Main building. And don’t forget, Penn State has a career library on the second floor of the Commons building. It is full of information about every career and is definitely a benefit to anyone who needs more information about their career choice, especially to those who are unsure of their career. Anyone with questions can talk to Mrs. Sharmon Bryant or Mr. Virgil Perry on the second floor of the Commons building. out information,” said Ronald Balick, 2nd semester Liberal Arts and Science major. Donald Wasylyk, 2nd semester corporate law, referred to our secretaries as “extremely friendly, helpful, and cooperative.” This being the case, on April 23, which is the actual Secretaries Day, “let’s not forget to let them know just how much we do appreciate them,” in the words of Nora Kendrick, 2nd semester DUS. U.P. Nittany Offers Advice (Continued from page 1) at Delco, while also serving as President of the Black Student League. Upon transferring to Universtiy Park, Bailey became President of the Black Caucus, a position that increased her responsibilities for ensuring that African-American students have a voice in the university community while enriching the campus and others of Penn State with cultural events and programs. In describing herself Bailey says, “I am an intelligent , African- descended woman who holds values and morals in the highest esteem. I am dedicatd to the overall struggle of African-descended people in the country and the world.” On May 16, Nikitra will complete her journey at Penn State with a degree in prelaw. As for her experiences with the Mentoring program, Mr. Perry regards her participation as successful with “connections that worked out well for her.” On April 10, Delco will be celebrating the achievements of participants in the program at a luncheon featuring Nikitra as the key speaker. Awards will be given in recognition of student participants and mentors. The event also marks the broadening of students who will be able to benefit from the program, including women and Asian students. The event will be hosted by Ms. Loretta Ramsey and Mr. Virgil Perry. Any student who wishes to obtain more information about joining the program should stop by room 214 in the Commons building.
