— LION’S EYE — April 9, 1997 Men’s Lacrosse Is Back! By B Ray Lax is back. After several years’ hiatus, Delco once again has a men’s lacrosse team. Under the guidance of faculty advisor John Terrel, along with club president Pete Meuller, vice president Jake Austin, and secretary F.J. Paul, the team has built its membership up to 30 players. The roster includes many experienced and decorated players from both local high schools and other college programs. The backbone of the team is definitely the strong defense... Ed Marshaleck heads up the fundamentally sound “D” with help from Bob Droszez, and Maurice Alvarado. Behind them is first year goalie Mark Oliver. “Whatever Mark lacks in experience, he makes up for with his instinct,” says F.J. Paul, the injured but still spiritual leader of the team. “I've never seen a goalie with no experience have the pure skill and reflexes that Mark has.” The midfield is led by team captain Rob Campbell. He is flanked by Mueller and local high school hero Jim Gavin. Mike Borsch brings to the attack his college-playing experience to help the team be successful against any formidable opponent. He shares his knowledge with fellow attackmen Joe “Garbage” Iredell and Mark Kalmon. The last time Delco fielded a lacrosse team they finished the season undefeated. This team feels they can match the effort of their predecessors. This positive, winning attitude is best summed up by Iredell. “We can beat anyone, anywhere, anytime.” Look for details on the team’s first home game against Temple coming in the late spring. The team would also like to alert anyone interested in playing next season to watch for announcements in the coming weeks. Lions Lack Consistency; Are Looking Forward For Wins By JoAnne Johnson The Men’s Volleyball Club entered into their first tournament of the season on March 22 with confidence. Unfortunately, the high expectations were let down, as the team placed third, submitting to PSU Abington 15-8, 16-14, and PSU York 15-13, 15-2, but beating Delaware County Community College 15-5, 15- 4. However, two Delco athletes, Bao (Alex) Tran and Mike Tuftner were awarded All-Tournament honors. “We didn’t play up to our ability,” commented Freshman Jay Lewis. “Looking back at how well we did with practices and scrimmages, we shouldn't have lost those games.” Team members agreed that they experienced a lack of mental preparation and focus. “The key to this game is cohesiveness and consistency,” said Coach Matt Clark. “We definitely need to improve upon those aspects of the game.” “I think we had first game jitters with Abington,” said Captain Rob McCoy. “Our confidence improved with DCCC, but I honestly think we did our best playing of the day with York, despite the loss.” The team’s next home game will be April 12 at 11:00 a.m. Intramural hockey opened with a slap-shot for spring semester. By Mary Doolittle Some people come and go from home to school and back again while others hit the bars and drown themselves in ...Pepsi. Lots of ex-jocks at the Delco talk the talk but don't walk the walk. They talk about their accomplishments and hum along to Bruce Springsteen’s “Glory Days”. And then there are the true athletes, the ones out in the gym or outside playing their respective sports everyday. The ones who deserve their...Pepsi’s. Anyways, the point is Intramurals. They are here at Delco. Guille and Egg shoot to tie and win. That statement on a normal day would require an explanation. However, in the wonderful world of Delco Intramurals this statement makes absolute sense. The three-on-three basketball tournament run by the Student Athletic Association had an impressive turn out. Twelve teams competed, playing every Monday and Wednesday for three weeks until the final games. The play-offs came down to the final seconds during which the team of Mike Guille, Chris Eggleston, Tom Forbes, Chris Smith, Armen “Bez” Bezdieken, and Mike “Tractor” Trailer pulled off a victory over a powerful team favored to win it all. “I couldn’t believe we won! It hurts being so good, but tell the other _ teams thanks for coming out and try again next year,” said Guille. Maybe that will happen since everyone on the championship team will be leaving with the exception of Bez and Tractor. The Intramurals continue with Co-ed Tennis and Softball. There are sign up sheets all over campus or you can contact Vince Screnci, Mary Doolittle, Tom Forbes or Tiz Griffith in room 136 Commons. All persons are encouraged to come out and participate. Sports Stars Honored By Jock Vitale On May 4, the Student Athletic Association will be holding its annual banquet to honor its athletes. This banquet is unlike any other in that everyone wins, not just by being the star athlete but for being the player. “I am really excited about this year’s banquet. I thought high school would be the end of playing competitive sports. But Delco gave me a chance to live out one of my dreams,” president Mary Doolittle commented. “It was a really fun time last year. We all came together after the Spring Fling that was the night before, and had a great time. Since we all play sports together and hang out together, it was a lot of fun,” commented treasurer Sharon DeSimone. This year all the atheletes are invited from the varsity sports of tennis, soccer, baseball, womens volleyball and basketball to the club and intramural teams of men’s volleyball and lacrosse, as well as the ever rambunctious cheerleaders. “I wasreally excited that the SAA recognized us and invited us to the banquet, since we are a new club. It means alot to us,” commented Pete Muller the president of the Lacrosse Club. This year the Italian American Social club will be host to the banquet. There is always ample food and entertainment as Athletic Director Tiz Griffith and Intramural Coordinator Vince Screnci amuse all the athletes with their always pleasurable anecdotes. As well as the honors for participation, the Jimmy King Memorial Award will be given to the athelete or athletes who best exemplify what a student athlete should be. Last year's recipients were assistant women’s basketball coach Mike Menichini and Janeane Aube. As some careers end at Delco the banquet is a nice finale to what for most was a childhood dream. BSL Hosts Sixth Marcel Carter Tourmanent By Mary Doolittle Delco’s Black Student League will hold its the sixth annual Marcel Carter Tournament on Friday, April 11 beginning at 6:30pm in the gym. The basketball tournament honors the memory of a young man, Delco student Marcel Carter, who eventually died of bone marrow cancer. Carter was a basketball player for Delco’s Men's Basketball team under coach Bill Wiley. “Marcel was an exceptional young athlete who gave all he could. He was always in the gym playing basketball. One of the nicest guys on campus, he continued to play basketball even after they amputated his leg,” said Athletic Director Tiz Griffith. The Tournament will be host to four teams; PSU Abington Ogontz, PSU Delco, Widener University, and Cheyney University. There will be three games, the semi-finals and the finals all to be played on the 11th. For the Fans there will be entertainment consisting of a D.J. and also steppers. The BSL will also be selling refreshments for those who might need to refuel after an open three point and slam dunk competitions. To enter these competitions you must pay $1. The admission price to the tournament is $5 to the general public and $4 to any student with ID. All proceeds will benifit the American Cancer Society, so all persons are encouraged to come out and support the cause.
