Page 2 — LION’S EYE — May 1, 1995 Graduation: Grads Help Delco Alumni Grow By Bob Lewis Graduation will soon be here and the class of ‘95 will be casting anxious glances into their future. To help alleviate those fears that some will experience, the Penn State Alumni Association offers some unique services. The PSU Alumni Association is a large, well connected group of graduates that have pooled their resources to help foster the careers and futures of all PSU students. The organization is broken down into distinct groups. There is the National Association, the Regional Association, and the Penn State Delco Campus Alumni Association. The last one is the group most vital to Delco Campus. They sponsorjob fair annually on campus and contribute $1,000 to the Chester City Chapter Schoiarship for a full time student. The Society is looking forward to hosting a Career Fair in the Fall 1995 Semester. Marianne Rhodes, Director of Public Relations, said, “the benefits of graduates joining the Delco Campus Alumni Society are many. It gives graduate students the opportunity to network with Alumni. This networking is invaluable in the competitive world today.” “In a more regional vein, the Delaware County Chapter sponsors and supports many activities. A newsletter is mailed on a regualar basis to keep members informed and up to date on projects. “Scholarships are a very important part of Undergraduate student life, and the Chapter supports a very important one. The H. Leonard Kraus Award in one of the largest endowements in the PSU system. It is awarded to three students a year at our campus.” This year’s winners are: Renee Dever, DUS, Gedeon Teklegiorgis, DUS, and Rita Varano, SGA President. “Mr. Kraus is a 1942 Graduate Engineer, former Nittany Lion football player, and a present owner of the United Elevator Co. of Philadelphia. Mr. Kraus is also a member of the Advisory Board,” she said. “The Alumni Society is a valuable organization to belong to and support, the benefits can be terrific.” She said, “Alumni offers discount membership in Job Bank USA, where a small fee can put prospective employers and graduates in touch with one another. A lot of these job opportunities are not generally advertised and often go unnoticed except for Job Bank. members." The camp, called the Super Sport Camp, will introduce inner city kids ages 7-15 to such sports and games as basketball, soccer, tennis, volleyball, and softball. This camp will run July 24 through August 11, from 9 am. to 4 pm. It will be supervised by volunteers from the Central Delaware County Y.M.C.A. Beginning July 10 and running through August 4, Penn State Delaware County will also offer a tennis workshop for Chester area middle and high school students. This camp, fully funded by a grant from the Ethel Sergent Clarke Smith foundation, will feature tennis pros Joe Providence and Dan Sears giving expert instruction. ~~ =~ In"addition- to’ all of ‘that, Delco will also be hosting the first annual Delaware County High School student tennis tournament. Sponsored by the grant from the Ethel Sergent Clarke Smith foundation, this program runs May 31, June 1,2,3. Delco Summer Sports Camp coordinator Sally Ent, is excited about the possibilities. “I thought it would be a neat idea to make use of an otherwise empty summer campus.” she said. “The Y.M.C.A. needs the facilities, and we could use the publicity. We could also use the time to get prospective students familiar with the campus.” “A summer sports camp was attempted before,” she said, “but it didn’t last. This program should be more successful because of the support of Joe Biscontini and Dr. Tomezsko.” Anyone interested in helping with the camp should call the Central Delaware County Y.M.C.A. at (610) 49740670. « * < - HR Registration Update: ideon Teklegiorgis, Virgil Perry, Nikita Bailey and Mike Robinson Photo by: WES TOMLINSON Tuition Payments Are A Must By Greg Bengston “Students must be aware of all dates in the registration process,” said Joyce Rigby, Registrar. Each student has been given a list of dates involved in the registration process upon scheduling for the Fall semester. The list includes deadlines for tuition payment, as well as dates involving late registration. “If a student has any questions involving their registration, they should not be afraid to ask,” said Mrs. Rigby, “We understand the complexity of the registration forms and are willing to help make the process run more smoothly.” The biggest problem that Shots For Penn By Martyna Sliwinska Starting Fall Semester 1995, all new students to University Park Campus and select Commonwealth campuses will be required to submit proof of immunization in order to attend classes. This new requirement results from the concern over the real possibility of an epidemic shutting down Penn State, similar to the shut down at Rutgers University in 1994. The following are the needed immunizations: 1) Rubeola (measles) -- two immunizations required with the second dose after the age of 5. 2) Rubella (German measles) -- one immunization required. students have is failing to submit the semester tuition by the proper deadline. The deadline for fall semester tuition is August 18. “If a student misses the deadline, his or her schedule will be cancelled,” stated Mrs. Rigby, “The tuition payment finalizes the registration.” ; The most important factor in registration is understanding the process. Any problems arising during registration should be taken care of immediately. With over one thousand students at Delco, it is impossible for the Registrar’s office to keep track of each students progress during the registration process. The responsibility falls on each individual student. State Students 3) Mumps -- one immunization required. 4) TB (high risk individuals only) -- skin test within the last two years. The above requirements will apply to all new students, including those at Delaware County Campus, starting Fall Semester 1996. Students who do not provide Penn State with proof of immunization will have a hold placed of their registration. Students not complying with the requirements will be prohibited to register for the next semester until their record clears. Budget Problems Addressed By Nicholas Felici The Legislative Advocacy program that is instilled in our commonwealth campus serves to inform our local political leaders of the needs of our campus. It also teaches them the importance of accessing Inter Net and Pic-Tell in order to consistently touch base with Penn State staff, students, and faculty. On March 3, a group of local legislators were addressed by President Thomas via Penn State's Pic- Tell System, and received some hands- on experience with the Inter Net System. A month ago, there was a strong letter-writing campaign in full stride. Letters to local legislators regarding funding cuts and the current ‘troublesome financial conditions of Penn State University were mailed out by the hundreds. The purpose of this political mass-mailing was to personally inform the politicians of our budget problems that were occurring and that will continue to plague our university unless the financial crisis is solved. : : A recent CCSG meeting at University Park included a well though out and excellently organized proposal that was brought to the table by Ben Faulds, Penn State Altoona Campus SGA President. Included in this proposal was factual information, a letter of strong intent, and information concerning how to arrange a voter registration drive. Presently, the Legislative Advocacy program has fulfilled their purpose successfully. The local leaders and legislators are properly informed.
