Vol. XXVI, No. 7 The 10Nn°S ; Penn State University, Delaware County Campus Eye April 1, 1995 Library to be Named After Founding Father By C. Kent In addition to naming Graham Spanier (current University of Nebraska-Lincoln chancellor) the next president of Penn State University at the March 16-18 meeting, the Board of Trustees made another important decision. They approved the re-naming of the Delaware County Campus library to the John D. Vairo Library/Learning Center effective immediately. The name change pays tribute to the founding Chief Executive Officer of the campus. John Vairo opened the Delaware County twenty-seven years on the floors above a roller skating rink in downtown Chester. He over-saw the relocation of the campus to its current place on Yearsley Mill Road. Dr. Mary Gergan, Associate Professor of Psychology, was instrumental in proposing the name change to the campus Faculty Senate and shepherding the proposal through many steps to the recent vote by the Board of Trustees. Basement Wall Damaged by Library Fire By Martyna Sliwinska A small fire roamed up an adjacent wall in the basement of the library building. Alarmed by the smoke, librarian Sara Whildin promptly reported the incident to campus security who put the fire out without incident. The fire seemed to be the work of an arsonist. The police report concluded that it started on a table within a pile of papers and spread up, engulfing the wall. The tabletop stopped the flames from reaching down to the floor and burning the carpet. Because there was a possibility of the fire damaging the wiring behind the drywall, pieces of it had to be removed to estimate the extent of the damages. The cost of the repairs exceeds $300. So far, no suspects have been apprehended. A few people have been questioned in connection with the incident and campus security has been able to come up with a description of a possible suspect. The investigation is still pending. The newly re-named John D. Vairo Library/Learning Center. To cap off an entire year of excellent student government action, and to praise all the clubs on campus for their great effort and support for this campus, the SGA will host the annual awards ceremony during commons hour on the second floor of the Commons Building, in the large conference room. Food and refreshments will be plentiful. The Awards Ceremony will be Spring Week '95 different than in years past. It will take place during commons hour, rather than in the evening, when it was formerly as a formal event. All students will be welcome to attend, even though and the program may run into class times. The event will be rather semi-formal, though all students are more than welcome to walk in and enjoy the ceremony. Tradition tells us that the annual SGA Student Awards Ceremony rewards deserving students for outstanding effort and high achievement in their respective clubs. Every club under the SGA will receive a certificate from the SGA upon There's Always Room for J-E-L-L-O By Jennifer Holland “I think it is going to be a beautiful thing because of all the activities that will be available to the students and faculty,” explained upcoming SGA treasurer, Ken Napaver, when asked about this year’s Spring Week. “My favorite will be the flag football,” he continued. Delco’s Spring Week holds many fun-filled events for everyone. Many sports, games, and entertainment are provided for the campus to enjoy. The Cafeteria Decorating Contest is an event that started on March 15 and will continue until March 29. On Wednesday, March 22, Jello Wrestling will be held in the gym at no charge. André Harris, Communications, said, “I hope they wrestle in my favorite flavor.” Rich Schaffer, campus security, enthusiastically stated, “We've been training Francine Stackhouse night and day and she’s going to kick some butt. She’s more machine than woman now!” The annual Spring Fling dance will be held April 1, from 8:30 to 1:00 at the Ramada Inn. The cost is $15 per person. “Last year’s Spring Fling was pretty wild,” recalled Jobin Pathappillil, ERM. “It’s a good way to forget about your worries and enjoy doing what you like best.” There will be a Beach Volleyball Grand Reopening on April 3. Sophomore Sean Burke claimed, “Last semester's opening was a lot of fun and I am looking forward to this year. I think we should have cookouts more often.” Criminology major Ted Trullinger agreed. He explained, “I like playing on the sand because it gives me the feeling of being on the beach.” (Continued on page 5) request, and that certificate will be presented to a member from each organization, selected by a certain committee. Nancy Trainor, student activities director, stated, “It promises to be a big event. The awards given out are very interesting and each is ideal for the club that they represent.” The Walker Award winner, the OUtstanding Service Award, and the Outstanding Adult Award winner will also be announced and recognized at the ceremony. Student turn-out is expected to be at its best, this being the final SGA meeting of the year.
