Vol. XXVII, No. 1 0Nn°S Eye September 21, 1995 PS Delco Hit By Flood of New Freshmen By Pete Howard This year at PSU Delco there many fresh faces around campus. The freshman class has 145 more students than last year (a 31% increase) and a total of 533. 441 of the new students are studying for a bachelor’s degree. 85 are aiming at an associates degree, and seven transfer freshman. The majority of first semester students come from local high schools, and Cardinal O'Hara ranking first with Upper Darby, Downingtown, Sun Valley, and Monsignor Bonner rounding out the top five. Most of the freshmen are from the tri-state area, and there are a few from Maryland and Virginia. Delco also has one new student each from states as far away as Connecticut, Florida, and even Arizona. Some of the most popular majors for incoming students are Liberal Arts, Engineering, and Education. Also, 22% of the class had a score of 1000 or above onthe SATs. .. 3 For most, this campus is a good choice for the first year of college in order for the adjustments from high school to be made easier. Going to class and understanding how the PSU system really works can be less stressful at a three-building campus than at University Park. Everywhere you look, you're bound to see a freshman, and if someone asks you where the gym is, don’t lie and tell her that its just past the bowling alley, because remember, we've all been freshmen at one time or another. Activities Fee Set for Fall By S. Evans ‘Something new will be on every Penn State student's bill next August: a $25 Activities Fee. Something else will be new too: the chance to greatly enhance and expand the campus programs and activities which students want most at each location. Similar to the current $40 Computer Fee, the new Activities Fee will be charged to full-time students each semester and pro-rated for part- time students. The purpose of the Fee is to raise funds for increased cultural and recreational opportunities on all Penn State campuses. The proposal for the Fee was backed by Commonwealth Campus Student Government Association, the Council of Chief Student Affairs Officers, Vice-president Dr. William Asbury, Past-President Dr. Joab Thomas, and thousands of students when it finally reached the Penn State (Continued on page 6) The Library Learning Center will be yamed the John D. Vairo Library Learning Center at special ceremonies Friday, re 1967. September 22, beginning 5:00 p.m. Vairo was the founding Drinking, Driving, Jobs and Free OJ By Michael Menichini Alcohol and drugs are part of a serious problem that we have to face on a daily basis. In the month of October, Penn State will be sponsoring an alcohol and drug program that will council students on the effects that they have on our bodies. Trooper Robert Dodge, who is leading the seminar, will be informing as well as answering the questions that students have. His experience in the Pennsylvania State Police Department will be conveyed to the students through the horror . stories that he has had to face over the years. Can you spare an hour of your time to help save someone’s life? On October 18, the Red Cross will be sponsoring a blood drive in the gym. The goal this year is to have at least 100 hundred people donate. Many times people are afraid to give blood and fear that this is an easy way to contract the AIDS virus. This is not true in the least bit. In fact, the Red Cross cleans and sterilizes all of their equipment after each use. Not only will you be helping someone else but you will also get free OJ, coffee and donuts. There comes a time in life where students have to decide what in life is going to make them happy. On Thursday, October 26 from 2pm to 9pm, PSU-Delco will be sponsoring Career Day in the Commons conference room. . This is an opportunity for students to speak with companies and arrange internships. It Campus Executive Officer of the campus, which opened in is also an opportunity for students to view the different jobs that are available and to take advantage of the ones that interest them. For more information, contact Virgil Perry. The Delaware County Transportation Association and Student Life in collaboration with SEPTA and the Clean Air Council of Delaware Valley will be sponsoring a Transportation Fair on Wednesday, September 20 from 1lam until 2pm on the patio outside the cafeteria. This fair is an excellent opportunity for students to explore the alternate methods of commuting other than single drivers. Arranging car pools, cycling, taking the bus or a train are just a few of the options that PSU- Delco students have available. Penn State’s New President Plans to Visit Delco Campus By Tim McLaughlin Attention all Penn State students. A former Nebraska Corn-husker is now wearing the blue and white. No, it’s not one of the football players, it’s Penn State’s new president, Dr. Graham Spanier, and he’s comingtoa campus near you. On November 2, Dr. Spanier will visit Delco campus to speak with the students, faculty, staff, and alumni. The purpose of Dr. Spanier’s visit is to familiarize him with the campus and the people that compose it. Also, he wishes to promote the University throughout the commonwealth. It is important for the students, faculty, and staff to present Dr. Spanier with ideas and concerns dealing with the campus so that he can be more informed of the issues concerning the school. Dr. Spanier plans to meet with the students for 30 minutes in the morning to listen to their questions and concerns. Stefan Roman ( 3rd sem. Liberal Arts) commenting on the new president's visit, said, "I am looking forward to hearing his view on the rising costs of tuition. I'm concerned about state funding for Penn State by the time we graduate.” Another student interested in Dr. Spanier’s visit is Alex Ostroff ( 3rd sem. International Politics ). "I'm hoping Dr. Spanier can put some pressure on the funding for the new technology building to get it started. The building’s groundbreaking ceremony was last year, and the only thing occupying the land now is a bunch of deer. : The details of Dr. Spanier’s visit are not etched in stone, but the ~ morning should include meetings with the CEO and first line staff and a tour of the campus. That will be followed by meetings with the students, faculty, staff and advisory board. After lunch, Dr. Spanier will visit Chester High School and will meet with the editorial boards of several local newspapers. He will also visit other special community activities centers. The evening will include a reception for local alumni followed by a dinner for a few of the local donors. Dr. Spanier then departs for University Park around 8:30 PM. Any students with concerns or questions relating to this campus or Penn State University as a whole are encouraged to attend the student meeting with Dr. Grahm Spanier. A question not asked is a problem not solved.
