Woodebueks Is a very cuiIour animal. It la made of linlr and eyes and linn two front teeth, and can nee a man with a gun when the eyes are shut and bolted. I have seen a dog shake a woodchuck till both were black In the fuce. A woodchuck can snivel up his none, and show his teeth, and look as homely as 1 can without trying. They sit on one end and eat with the other. A wood chuck can get home faster than a gun can shoot. He is round all over except his feet, which are black. When eaten they retain the flavor of their newts, and seemed to have been cooked without being pared. A fat woodchuck, when eaten properly, is no laughln' matter. They come under the head of ' domestic animals,'' and think there ain't no place like home when a dog goes for one of 'em. Not Very Complimentary. One of our young men who visited Europe a short time since stepped ashore at Liverpool with a beard the growth of the voyage, long hair, aud looking and feeling decidedly rusty generally. He at once repaired to the nearest barber shop, and having entered, said to the native artist in charge, " I want you to shave me, cut my hair, brush me up, and make a good looking man of me." The barber looked the young man over for a moment, and very deliberately re marked, " Hi can shave thee, and hi can cut thy 'air, and brush thee h'up but the Lord H'Almlghty 'lmself can't make a good-looking man of thee." Didn't Know the Difference. " See here, Parker, what's the differ ence between a ripe watermelon and a rotten cabbage V" asked one letter carrier of another the other day. You've got me there. I don't know," he returned with a look more puzzled than an illiterate man at a cross-roads guide-board. ' Then you'd be a mighty nice man to send after a watermelon, you would," remarked the quizzer as he moved on. She Means Well. An old colored lady of one of the back counties sings all the good old Methodist hymns, but she gets them mixed sometimes. She sings : Sweet prospects, sweet birds, and sweet flowers Have all lost thelrsweetness but me, And another : Am I a shoulder of a hoss, A quarter of a lamb. She means all right, though, bless her good heart. KiT " You have often, said the clergy mau, " heard the brethern say ' Amen ! amen 1' while some one was praying. What did they mean V If any one knows, let him hold up his hand." Up jumped a little fellow, so eager to an swer as not to wait for recognition, " I know!" he called out. "It means hurry up and get through." There was an audible smile. 13?"" Bruddrln," said an elderly colored preacher, In the course of a funeral sermon over the remains of one of his flock whose head had been caved in by the hind feet of a mule. " Brud derin'. It am pow'ful strange dat arter mo'n a hundred years of 'sastrous 'speriment, a culled pusson shud pus sist in 'proachln' a mule fum de r'ar." 63 " Mamma, where do the cows get the milk V" asked "Willie, looking up from the foaming pan of milk which he had been Intently regarding. "Where do you get yourtears ?'' wastheanswer. After a thoughtful silence he again broke out : " Mamma, do the cows have to beepanked ?" 65" A young mother, explaining christening to her five-year old boy, told him that when he was christened he " would be one of God's little lambs." " And will I have hind legs and go baa V" eagerly asked the boy. A good olddarkey'sfavorite" tex" for his " boss sarmont at de camp meet in':" " De bigger de co in de more de fur, and whar de ole hen scratches dar lie de bug also!" g- Coal is a very singular commodity. When you purchase it, instead of going to the buyer, it goes to the cellar. COS" " I'll pay you're bill at sight," as the blind man said to the doctor, who had, in vain, attempted to cure him of b)indness.
