Five sub- jects of study were included in the course, Fire-Fighting 1. Nine members from Friendship Fire Co. attend- ed and completed the classes: Scott Gainer, Phil Martin, Dave Wilson, Joe Mohr, Lester Stoner, John Thomas, Jere Hoffmaster, Abe Koser, and Bill Martin. 1. Following instruc- tions, students entered a 2 1/2 story furnished house where burning tires created smoke. Obstacles were also placed in the house which required firemen to crawl and climb without the aide of light. 2 Ladders, raises, carries, and related evolu- tions - required 6 hours of lecture and practical work. Twelve foot ladders and 35’ ladders (extension) were used. Each man learned the basic carries, commands, and raises. The men also advanced hose lines up ladders and performed basic rescue operations. 3. Salvage and Overhaul Procedures - required 3 hours of lecture and practi- cal work. Men learned how to use tarps for best protection of owner’s pro- perty and how to funnel water out of buildings. Instruction was also given on proper clean-up opera- tions and where to look for hotspots. 4. Portable fire extin- guishers - required 3 hours of training. Firemen learn- ed the 4 major classes of fires and the types of fire extinguishers to be used on each class of fire. The class also fought with flammable liquid fires with fire extin- guishers. S. Forcible entry, tools and power equipment - required 3 hours of training. Firemen were instructed in the types of tools and use to force entry into burning buildings. Firemen working with ladders at training grounds Mt. Joy swim team wins 2d place On Saturday, July Sth the Mount Joy Swim Team won the second place trophy at the Conestoga Valley Invi- tational Swim. Then on Tuesday, July 7 they swam against the Ephrata red Team at their home pool and won by a 245-179 score. Quite a few team records were broken as follows: Eight and under (Girls)— Hope Madara—2S m. 27.4 (tied old record)—Back- stroke. Twelve and Under (Girls) —Sherri Kinsey SO m. 32.8 Freestyle. Sherri Kinsey 25 m. 16.6 Butterfly. Fourteen and Under (Boys)—Jim Johnson S50 m. 40.2 Backstroke. Seventeen and under (Girls) —Gail Madara S0 m. 43.3 Backstroke. Seventeen and under (Pys)—Dean Buchenauer 100 m. 59.5 Freestyle. Dean Buchenauer S0 m. 31.5 Butterfly. Individual records proved again to be quite rewarding to our Mount Joy Team. The team is now practic- ing to meet Manheim on Tuesday, July 15 at the Manheim Community Pool at 6:15 p.m. : Besides all the practicin the team is doing, they are now quite ifvolved in their Pizza Sale for July 19 delivery. The parents, with Hazel Germer as chairman, are also helping them in organizing a Bake Sale at the Mount Joy Pool on Sunday at 1:00p.m., July 20. Anyone can support the team by eating atéthe Food Sale or taking some home- made item along home. These proceeds are to help the team with entry fees at Invitationals and to meet the yearly budget as well as end of the year awards which are awarded at the annual picnic.
