July 16, 1975 Bulletin picture which Mrs. Haines says helped her to get walkway at bridge How would you solve this Editorial: What 1 woman can do The Susquehanna Bulle- tin congratulates Mrs. Lucy Haines on succeeding in having a walkway construct ed along the heretofore dangerous bridge at the eastern edge of Mount Joy Who can estimate how many lives her persistant one-woman campaign will save? It’s frequently said that “If citizens would just band together they could improve conditions in their commu- nities”’ Mrs. Haines has proved that it dosen’t take a lot of people to change things. She has proved that just one person, who sticks at it and dosen’t get discouraged by others’ lack of interest, can make a community a safer place to live. Her lone fight for a safer bridge reminds the Bulletin of Gary Cooper’s singular devoticn to duty in the movie, High Neon. Queen of the Kitchen Every year a number of young women and girls are crowned as queens of this or that in Donegal Country. Queens seem to be selected mainly for their youthful beauty. But Donegal women have a lot of appealing qualities besides their physical beauty. One very important quali- ty is their cooking ability, as recognized in these old sayings: ‘‘The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.”” ‘“‘Kissin’ don’t last, but cookin’ do.”’ So, the Bulletin is going to have a contest for ‘‘Queen of the Kitchen.”’ We are asking each of readers to send us the name of the woman you think is the best cook in Donegal Country (lving within the Donegal School District). Just write the name of the woman you vote for and also the dish she cooks that you | like best, and send it to Susquehanna Bulletin, Box 75A, R. D. 1, Marietta, PA 17547. Adam and Eve A lot of readers have asked us why we don’t have more ‘‘Adam and Eve” columns. One reason why we don’t have more Adams & Eves is because we don’t have a good way of selecting married couples to write up for the column. Another reason for not having more Adam and Eve columns is that we don’t know couples as well as people who have known them for a long time. So, we are asking our readers to write us about couples they know. We will publish the Adam and Eve articles you send us and take pictures of the couples to be published with the articles. Please write us about couples you know. Tell us the story of their lives together. Send your ‘‘Adam and Eve” to Susquehanna Bul- letin, Box 75A, R. D. 1, Marietta, PA 17547. The Bulletin received a letter last week from a reader who was having a personal problem. At first, we thought we would publish the letter along with our own best advice on how to solve it. But then we had-a better idea. We decided te publish the letter, but instead of giving our solution to the problem we would ask our readers for their answer to the problem. [spoo8 [aaym 1daoxa| 1H % OF shor ny Your paper In this issue of the Bulletin we are trying something new. We want to make ‘the Bulletin, not our paper but your paper. We are asking you to write us - About Adams and Eves you know. About personal problems you need help with and how you would solve other people’s problems. About who you vote for to be Queen of the Kitchen. We don’t know what responses we'll get to these various ideas. We hope we get a lot. In this way, we hope to make the Bulletin your paper. We also decided we’d ask readers to send us more of their problems. (If you want to send us a letter about a personal problem, you don’t have to sign your name.) We will publish letters about problems and ask other readers to send us their advice on how to solve each problem. Here's the first letter about a problem: Dear Editor: 1 have two children, a boy 3 years old and a baby 4 months old. The Susquehanna Bul- letin has received from a number of people the suggestion that it change its name to Donegal Bulletin. We are impressed by the logic of this suggestion - because we are a newspaper devoted to the affairs of the community that lives in the Donegal School District - Marietta, Mount Joy, East Donegal Township, and part of Mount Joy Township. As one reader said, ‘‘The Susquehanna Bulletin could be in Sunbury as well as Marietta.’’ (When the ‘Susquehanna Times was founded only last My son was completely toilet trained a year and a half ago but lately he’s been having ‘‘accidents’’ once in a while. My husband and I pun- ished him for his accidents, but now he’s started some- thing worse. He’s wetting his bed. We have punished him for this too, but it seems to be getting worse instead of better. We are taking Very seriously the suggestion to change our name to Donegal Bulletin. Of couse, we don’t want to be changing our name all the time and another change would be the third new name in a year. But we think the sugges- tion makes a lot of sense, because it describes our newspaper accurately.
