Chester Wittell poetry THE THREE TRAVELLERS God, nothwithstanding creed or zone, By many different names is know. A Greek, an Arab and a Persian, Companying on an excursion, Paused and readying dish and cup, Sat down at Kufa’s gate to sup. For supper did the Greek attest ‘“‘Staphele,’’ of all food was best. ‘“Nay,’’ said the Arab, ‘‘well I wot Than ‘eneb’ better food is not.” ‘““Faugh!”’ said the Persian; ‘‘Out on thee! Better than ‘angur’ food can’t be.” Thus word by word their anger rose Till quarrel almost came to blows. Just then a peasant and an ass With ripe grapes laden chanced to pass, Which instantly revealed its flaws And brought the argument to pause. ‘‘Stephele!’’ pointing, said the Greek. ‘““Eneb!’’ the Arab, low and meek, And giving grape a native version, ‘‘Angar, truly,” said the Persian. Thus was the food they craved the same But labeled with a different name.
