FE,AIT S SATURDAY MORSIDid Reader, did yoh ever see the ore-diggers taking from the bowels „of the earth great lumps of san dy, cindery looking material? If you have seen them doing this, perhaps the thought never occurred to you that, contained in some of these lumps, was a coffee-mill, that would soon grind the rich Java you love so well for breakfast, or a lock that would pro tect you in your slumbers from the dagger of the midnight assassin, or a hand corn-mill, with which you could yourself, In a few moments, grind enough corn to make you fresh mash every evening, for several days, and a great many other things too tedi ous to mention. These thoughts were suggested to-day while taking a walk through the new Verily Works of Messrs. Warwick, Atterbury .4 Co. When we reflected that the innumerable, beautiful and useaul articles which wore shown us by Mr. Atter bury, were once tumbled out of a bank, in the shape of an unsightly mass of ore, we could not help won dering how manufacturing hail been brought to such perfection. Messrs. Warwick & Atterbury are the active part ners in this firm, and are both intelligent and indus trious mechanics. Scales, looks, latches and coffee mills, are the principal articles manufactured by them. The locks,of which they make three kinds, are patented by themselves, and it seemed to us if they had nut sue seeded in covering the whole ground, it the lock business there was no use in any one else trying. They received the third patent for a lock yesterday, which is the joint invention of Warwick A Atter bury. It is very simple, and is suited to doors of all kinds, as are both their other locks. The great ad -vantage of all their locks appears to be their sim plicity, and the fact that they can he used either right or left handed. Coffee mills are manufactured at the Variety Works, at $2 50 and $3 per dozen, while a few years ago, nearly half the first amount was paid for one. A very important fact connected with this establishment, is oil the work they manu facture is done within its walls. The ore, after be ing run into'idgs, is taken into the building, and the next shape you see them in, is the endless va riety of useful and ornamental articles in which the Variety Works abound. The building used by this enterprising firm is large, well ventillated, and oth erwise admirably arranged, situated on the head of Water street, formerly known as Bakewell's bless Works. We have not time at present to speak of oxua•third the new things we yesterday examined, but eantißpolose without speaking of a corn grinder and dself.gittiding wrench. The corn grinder is Wararickid patent, and we feel confident that every one vholiites fire miles from a mill, would save in three 4 inonths, in time occupied in going to the mill :alone, the price, which is $7,00, of one of these admirable machines. A little boy can grind with it two bushels of corn in an hour, and have the meal already sifted. It is a great invention, and should be seen to be fully appreciated. Warwick's self-adjusting wrench is a groat im provement, being decidedly better than the old wrenches used, besides costing only one third as , much, they being sold for $3,00 per dozen. The Variety Works, although not under full head way, employ nearly 100 workmen, who are nearly all atiatried men. We have said thus much of this es. •tablisbmeal, because we believe such enterprise as the firm of Warwick, Atterbury A Co. possess, should be encouraged. It is what has made Pittsburgh what she is. The admirers of the Freiirli equestrienne, however, were determined not t' be cheated in that way; consequently, when the the.: tt wore opened for the evening, the rush was unpre,.. dented. I.—Senate.—Mr. Crittenden presented a memorial from Lieutenant Bartlett rela tive to the action of the naval board in his case, and that of the Senate Naval Committee thereon. Mr. Crittenden addressed the Senate at some length on the subject. On Mr. Crittenden's motion the papers were order ed to be printed, with a view to do justice to Mr. Bartlett. Mosers. Cass and Stuart presented petitions of zens of Michigan praying for the admission of Kansas with the Topeka Constitution. On motion of Mr. Seward a resolution was adopted. directing the Committee on Commerce to enquire whether it is expedient to require that the fire room, of steam vessels should bo constructed of fireproof materials. The Senate considered the report of the Committee on Indian Affairs. No further legislation was nec essary in the case of Richard W. Thompson, who made an agreement with the Menomonee Indians for one-third of the money be should procure them, in addition to the amount allowed for lands, and their remqval across the Mississippi. He obtained $240,- 000 from the government, and modifying his original agreement consented to take $40,000 as his fee. A bill was passed by the last Congress authorizing this to be paid him, with the proviso that Thompson pre viously get the consent of the Indians, which he did; but complaint is made that Commissioner Manny_ penny prevented the payment, on the ground that the bill signed by the President was not the bill passed by Congress, the proviso having been by some means omitted therefrom. A debate was had with no result, when the Senate adjourned until Monday. Honer.—Mr. Boyce said that be bad reiriyeil certificate from the Governor of South Carolina, stat ing that Preston S. Brooks had been re elected to Congress from the Fourth Congressional Di,tri,t, and he asked to be now sworn in. Mr. Brooks advanced to the chair of the Fpeaker. who administered the oath to support the Coustito_ don of the United States. The consideration of the Kansas contested election case was resumed, and the clerk completed the read ing of Mr. Reader's statement commenced yesterday. The latter refers to various precedents, and quotes among others the remarks of Messrs. Cass and Ilu. chamtn, to show that a delegate may be admitted in the absence of a specific law for that purpose, which Mr. Roeder argues to support, the position heretofore assumed by him. Mr. Whitfield, the pitting delegate from Kansas, maid that his election should not be reversed without a full and impartial hearing. He maintained that ho was elected under a statute passed in pursuance of the organic law, and therefore was entitled to remain where be was. There was no proper legal challenger of his rights, from the fart that he had no competinv in the canvass ; hence Mr. Reeder, being a volunteer, bad no right to contest his seat. Rut apart from this Mr. Reeder is estupped, he having certified the Leg islative Assembly as legal, and had the power to right such Pvrong , as were represented to exist. He. (Mr. W.) insisted that every rule of testimony in his a se had been violated. Mr. Washburn, of Me., replied to Mr. Stephen., ccatentling for a firm, uniform principle and preen. dent. The House has the right to inquire as it has inquired in the present case into a question of fact, whether there was or not a Legislature which could pass laws of binding foree. It had boon ineentesti bly proved that the Kansas Logi-Wore was elected by the aid of citizens of Missouri. lie insisted that Reeder be admitted as the proper representative of a majority of legal voters in Kansas. The resolution reported by the Committee on Flee lions that iVhitfiehl is not entitled to a seat as a del egate was adoptod—yeas 110, nays U 2. The second resolution, that Reeder be admitted to a seat, was re jected --yeas 88 ; nays 113. Mr. Washburn, of Me., asked but was denied unan imous consent- to offer a resolution to pay Roeder milage and per diem to date. The house considered, but passed no private bill-, and then adjourned.
