GERMAN DEMOCRATIC PAPER The work of getting up a new German Demo cratic paper goes bravely on. It will be com menced next week, and will undoubtedly prove the most profitable paper published here for our Germah citizens. It will to a great extent sup plant those that have betrayed their friends and gone over to the Know Nothings. The Demo crats stood up firmly for the constitutional rights of the naturalized citizens during the dark times of 1854 and 1856. The mament the battle is ended the German editors of two papers wheel round and propose to their readers to help "crush out" the Democratic party if possible!! i The great mass of the Merman voters repel the proposition with scorn and indignation; and then oome forward promptly to contribute their sup port to a new paper that will speak their senti• ments ; and that will help to prevent the old Keystone State from being sold to New England abolitionists. The new paper will succeed. We had the pleasure of informing the gentlemen who have the matter in charge that one man from an ad joining eonuty would subscribe for fifty copies. From another county we are told two hundred subscribers can soon be obtained. With a rea sonable effort the new paper can find abundant support, and do great good for a cause and a party with which the interests of the working men, and the Union are closely identified. We are happy to be able to state upon good authority that the great mass of the German democrats of this county are sound and true, and will remain so. Let the new paper receive a liberal support. That done, the Times waited a while to hear the dieuttionists shriek about their bad luck. But it was of no use. Mr. Hoffman was ineligible, and positively declined to run. One would have thought this was cruelty enough for one - paper 10 eotimit. But not so. The Miles now comes out and proves with equal clearness that Col. Bissel is also constitutionally ineligible to the office of Governor, or any - other office of honor or profit in Illinois. The proof is clear, positive and unanswerable. In the Con stitution of Illinois, the following clause appears --Article 13, Section 2b: "Any person who shall, after the adoption of this Constitution, fight a duel, or send or AC, /CPT A CHAL LENGE FOR .THAT PURPOSE, or be alder or abetter in fighting a duel, shall be deprived of the right of holding any office of honor or profit in this State, and shall be punished otherwise, in such manner as is, or may be prescribed by law." " This Constitution," mentioned in the above pro• vision, was adopted by the Convention, August 31, 1847: ratified by the vote of the people March fi, 1848; and went into force on the first day of April, 1848. The M;th Section of the same Article of; that Constitution provides that, before entering upon the duties of the office of Governor, he shall take an oath in which the following words occur: "I DO SOLEMNLY SWEAR, THAT I HAVE NOT FOUGHT A DUEL, NOR SENT OR AC CEI'TED A CHALLENGE TO FIGHT A DUEL " 1222=1 The Times then adds "Subsequently to Ap'il. Isle, William H. Ws:Jell, now a candidate for C.e office of tiovernor of this State, ho being a citizen, and a resident of this State at the time, did receive and 'accept a challenge' front one Jefferson Davis, 'to fight a duel.' The fact that he did so accept a challenge to tight a duel, will not we suppose be questioned or denied ; if it shall be, we arerprepared to publish a copy of the challenge, ' and a copy of Bissell's acceptance thereof ; also to publish proof that said duel was to be fought with weapons, and under circumstances which rendered it inevitable, except only in case of a want of skill by the parties, that the death of one or both of the par ties would ensue. We say we have the proof of these facts at hand if necessary. "Col. Bissell, knowing the fact that he has accept ed a duel, the issue of which was so far likely to re. suit in death, that he drew up his will, and made other dispositions of his worldly affairs upon the eve of fighting it, will never 'solemnly swear "11 have not accepted a challenge to fight a duel.' Without that oath, the Constitution expressly declare,' be can never ' enter upon the duties of his office.' There, then, is the whole case. Is it not a perfectly clear ono That Cob Bissell did accept a challenge to fight a duel with Col. Jefferson Davis is known to the whole country . and will not he for one moment denied How, then e 51.1 he be a candidate for governor 9 How tan he take the oath of office without committing, and being indicted for perjury'' As we have a good many subscribers in l' it nois, we publish this for their benefit; aml a 1.., to let our home readers see what a cruel der ruffian" paper is the Chicago Ton, THE SWEET GIESJIAN ACCENT Republicans, like lien. Thinking. however, that the fact of their connection with the Know Nothing order, was either not known or has been forgotton, these self-same les l era are now directing their special attention to wheedling the Germane to vote for Fremont. Ey way of influencing the Germans of other &Mc they have been industriously circulating the t port that a large majority of the Germans id Pennsylvania are Black Republicans The edi for of the Philadelphia Demokrat, however, liss taken these worthies in hand, and denounces the report as a libel upon his countrymen. He rocs "the fruitless attempt of the Fremont leaders, to manufacture public opinion, is re-acting nron themselves, as the frauds become one by one posed. The Germane are bemocrate both I.y education and habits, and will never leave their party to follow some sentimental absurdity, which cannot stand the test of reason." - Piot A rot, Our Black Republican neighbor. can talk very glibly about principles, and can recommend to Pittsburgh merchants and mechanics to sacrifice all their trade and interelts with the South for the sake of principles. And yet nt the same tine a Massachusetts delegate to the Philadelphia Con vention can go home to liostoa, and brag that the plans are all laid, and the funds raised by which to buy Pennsylvania for Fremont. An .I he thinks a million dollars will do it. Our glo rious old Commonwealth is to be bought by y vi kee demagogues and disunionists and infidels for a million of dollars !! ' is not that a compliment to the people of Pennsylvania. Pittsburgh de rives advantages worth three times that sum from its commerce with the southwestern States every year. Yet all that must be sacrificed to enable abolition demagogues and' newspapers to make rt million in hand for selling the State to the disunionists of Massachusetts and New York. And the same papers can prate eloquent ly about the e.xteraal principles that pGould be maintained at the sacrifice of all pecuniary in terests. And yet those papers cannot name a single political principle that they are advoca ting except opriOsition to the principle of popu lar sovereignty, hostility to tie south, disunion and civil war. Those are the principles for which all pecuniary interest of Pittsburgh should be sacrificed. When we think of that million dollars with which our State is to be bought we can under stand the sincerity of those who preach such folly The Buchanan and Breckinridge Glee Club, of tins city, is a little ahead" of any thing of the kind ever got up here. It is composed of a large number of excellent singers, who, with little more practice, will equal any band of vo calists in the country. Their serenades are de lightful, and we acknowledge ourselves under obligations for a musical entertainment night before last that was very agreeable. Their songs are as effective as any speeches that can be made during this campaign; and we are satisfied now that if good music is an element of success in the political campaign the Democrats are ahead of all opponents. 81/CCORS to the "Buck and Brea " Glee Club. I see that steps have been taken towards realizing this object, and as far as can as yet be judged from the subscription list, 1 have not the least doubt but that in a short time the necessary funds will be raised. Besides this the Germans held several spirited meetings, and on Tuesday neat, as I understand, a German Democratic meeting will be held at Wilkin's Hall, which has been tendered to them free gratis during the campaign. The reply, or rather excuse, of the Freedom's Friend, seems to imply a sense on his part of having done something wrong : what be might rather retract, if he only could. He acknowl edges that he has called the masses of the Re publican party "a fanatical, stupid rabble;" that he still does not altogether trust the Republicans and Fremont in regard to their Know Nothing sentiments. lie therefore comes out in a lengthy article directed to the liberal press, proposing to send a committee to Fremont for the purpose of ascertaining what is to be expected of him, if elected respecting the naturalization laws ' You see from this that the Freedom's Friend mistrusts the Republicans and their candidates, and nev ertheless has the perfidy to assail the Demoemts day after day, and to advise his fellow citizens to vote the Republican ticket. Mr. Hecker, on whose joining the Republican party the papers raised a great halloo, expressed himself in this letter in such a manner that the German Fremont Club iu Buffalo resolved not to publish the same, until some offensive paragraphs were stricken out. The Frredom's Friend said in its preface to said letter that it had wished to delay its publication ; that Mr. Hecker mistrust ed the Republican party and Fremont—but still more mistrusted the Democratic party.
