I The stirring news of the last lew dayß lias aroused every heart to the fact that a great j. danger has arisen in the first and best gov -1 - ernment which the world ever saw. The [ ' news that the governments of States and | the people of cities and towns were rising f in their might to defend the Constitution and the laws, which have been assailed by madmen in the South, seemed to fire the hearts of all, and long before the hour for f which the meeting was called, the immense it hall was crowded to suffocation. The floor, F . the galleries, the stage was a perfect sea of ! upturned faces. There must have been five i thousand men at that meeting, many of f whom could not get inside the doors, f The hearts of this immense mass of men I seemed to beat as one heait for the Union. • With one voice they pronounced their deci i sion that the laws and the integrity of the f Government must be maintained, f When the hour arrived, Mayor Wilson led upon the platform the venerable William Wilkins, whose Bilver hairs were welcomed by a tremendous shout. He was, by accla mation, chosen President of the meeting, and made a few eloquent and patriotic ro r marks, speaking for the country with an r old man’s wisdom. Hod P. C. Shannon was then called u]>ou and made a most eloquent and patriotic ad dress. .Judge Shannon’s speech was one of the happiest and most masterly efforts we have ever heard from his lips. The ad dresses were all such as were eminently lit to be made on such an occasion, but as there were no conveniences for reporting, it would be doing injustice to all to attempt even au outline of the remarks of any one. Throughout its whole proceedings the meeting was characterized by a true Ameri can spirit, and political partisanship was not permitted to raise its head in the vast as sembly. The excitement among commercial men yesterday was more intense than ever. <in the Corn Exchange, at the Merchant’s Ex change, in Wall street, at the corners of the streets, and at the dining saloons, nothing else of moment was talked about bui Charleston and Fort Sumter. Merchants were SO much absorbed about the war news thillt seemed difficult for them to attend to businem When one inquired of the other about the market for cotton, “Cotton be hanged," he would exclaim, “what is the last news from Charleston And when another would ask of a ship-owner about freights, “ Let freight go to Halifax. Has the fleet arrived at Charleston?” Such seemed to be the effect of the war news up on many of our commercial men. THE MAttS.. , , . vC.- kef. ?,*. Eastern through mail closes aCB/j!clpck P.
