Talent for the past lew days, and although martial bands paraded the street*, recruiting did not go on as rapidiy as on Monday Yet tcere were many accssiu::. to companies old and new and the ct mj lement of several was Ailed up last evening. The United States Zouave Cadets had one hundred and thirty en listed, the Duqucsne Greys seventy and the Washington Infantry sixty-seven. The ranks if the Pennsylvania Zouaves and Jackson Independent Blues have also been filled nearly to the required number. The two oompanies last named have been notified that their services aro accepted and directed logo to Harrisburg without delay, where they will receive their (quipments. The Pennsylvania Dragoons, Scott Legion, Lafayette Biues, of Allegheny, and United States Guards, Capt. Seigrtst, are also actively engaged in recruit ing and all expect to have the requisite num ber by to-day. Lieut. Trovillo, with bis " FeDcibl *‘«." Jno. A. Stewart, Gapt. Geo. W. Leonard, Capt. ilichard Ewalt, of Lawrence vtlle, Capt. R. R. McDowell, of the Alle gheny State Guards and Capt. Tyler, of the Allegheny Railaplitters have muster rolls open and are rapidly filling up t b e i r r » llka . We ‘>° learn that the Eagle f; ro Company are about to organise a company. With all those companies filled up, Allegheny county will have her full quota of men ready. The Turtle Creek Guards and Neg ley Zouaves of East Liberty are en gaged in making recruits and we learn that a new company is to be organized in Birmingham, consisting chiefly of glass blow. era. Frank Eohimon, ion of Gan. Wm. Kobinson, of Allegheny, yeßterday received a despatch from his father, now in Washington city, in amwer to one requesting him to procure a commission, stating that a company under his (Frank s) command will be accepted by the Governor. The General then authorises Ms »on to organize a company immediately, offer ing a bonus of $2O to each man. The Genera 1 adds ‘I will foot the bill on my return borne." T*aat evening the armories were crowded with new recruits and luokeee-on. An effort is being made to secure City Hall for recruiLing purposes, which will give more room. The City Guards, we understand, passed a resolution at their meeting lastevening lender., ing their services. A meeting of the officers of the brigade was held yesterday afternoon, when the command eri of the brigade were requested to report the number of men :n each ready to go, to Gen, Negley at Bo’elo-ck morning. Gen. Hegley has received a dispatch stating that the services uf the brigade would be accepted, and request* ing him to have them placed under marching orders at Pittsburgh forthwith, in readiness to march to Harrisburg at once. They will be joined here by other companies of Western Pennsylvania whose services have been or are to be Undcrcd. They are all to be carried Eastward by the Pennsylvania Railroad, free of charge, we believe. Several companies are ex pected here In a day or two, including two from Kittannicg. Such is the spirit manifested. As we write, notwithstanding the driving rain, martial mu tic is heard in the streets and new acoessions of recruits aro being constantly made. How many men have already enlisted it is impossible to say, but Allegheny county will, we think, have at least a thousand men ready to march within the week. Indeed, it is stated that the Pennsylvania Zouaves will be ready to leave to-morrow. If recruiting has been going on as actively throughout the State as here, the sixteen regiments required from Pennsylvania will soon be on their way to Washington City. Enthusiastic Meeting at Sewlckley. On Monday evening, one of the largest meet ings ever convened in that place, almost spon taneously gathered at the public school house, in Sewlckley, to give expression to the pre vailing sentiment in respect to the state of the oountry. My doar and valued niuthor i*i becoming aged, and tny nature craves a younger and dt-aror com- panion ' Horrid ‘ At that moment an odor of burn ing i» n aL came mo6t unpleasantly to my olfao lories 1 begged to be excused, and hastened into UioeuHnary quarter* to tind tbo peiro of beef 1 had eo oaretully prepare, almost spoilt. Nervously, I caught a holder from the sbelf, ami in so doing, succeeded in knocking mutuor’s favorite cut-glass pitcher, which fell with a loud crash, breaking into a thousand fragments. Fhilip must have board it. Oh, this mefti getling. with a lover in the parlor. With a flushed brow 1 w**nt back to the old scat. Philip smiled provokingly. “Nelly,” h-' then added, “I want a wife. Home will lack nothing, then, to render it the dearest resting-place this side of heaven. ] know a little girl who is as prociou* to to me as l.fe.” “Oh"’ Just then a disturbance in Bridget's apartment obliged mo again tu leave. 1 bad carelessly left open the door, and dame grimier had taken the liberty to enter and taste of the pudding I bad set to cool. It was in no enviable frame of mind that I hauled out the dining table, and laid the dish es. As I looked at the warm, heavy buiscuits, unpalatable meat, and burnt potatoes, my pride and self-confidence vanished. I should not have cared so much, had 1 not known what an excellent cook and notable house keeper Mrs Doan was. Besides, in the mat ter of the palate, Philip had been an epicure Irom his cradle, and everybody knows that men think more of ih-ir stomachs than of their sweethearts. To add still more to my trepidation, Philip regarded me curiously when 1 invited him to dine. As he eyed the viands before him, I thought he was going to say grace, by the sudden elongation of his vis age. I poured some mudJy coffee, and, not** withstanding my secret discomfiture, I took malicious pleasure in seeing him sip the bev erage. He was an ioveterale coffee drinker, but, somehow, his cup did not lower much. What rare fun I should have had, if I bad not been Dinah ! We came to desert at last, and when 1 handed him the flaky crusted pie, a relieved expression stole'over his counten ance, which one tasting changed to a percepti ble grimace. What could ail my highest ef forts ? Alas 1 1 had forgotten to sweeten the apple ! Were vexatiooß never to cease? By chance, I caught aglimpse of a reflection in the glass. W«6 it mine? I glanced downward. Shade of Ham! My faith in spotless robed heroines was gone at once. I was a tricolored exhibi tion ofred, white an .1 black Troubles heaped themselves up strangely I wanted to throw mytelf on the carpet, and ory like a very child. X did nothing of the kind. Instead, I * -i, *■ 'v.- •*- rr.j' i burst into a laugh, as the whole scene came be fore me in its ridiculous light. I laughed til! , the tears rolled down my cheeks; and, as Philip j b?came more disgusted, my merrimeot in i creased. I laughed when he went away, tbouoh I knew he would never tinish the offer so unluckily begun. Three we«kg laler he wa* united to a Jenny Wheeler. Soon after, I attended a party at widow Doan’*, and hid the happiness in over hearing X'niiip's indifferent remark to Fred Lee, a kind o :explanitory apology for the Air* talion between us: “A doar little girl, but a poor cook.” In time my parents returned: and I was only too glad to put off a responsibility of which 1 was heartily tired. I shrewdly suspected that my father had an eye on Philip’s coffers, for ho was cross toward me for three days after hearing of the wedding. Just as though I could have helped it: I learned two lessons that young ladiea may pront by. Firstly, it Is a diflerent thing t*» play kitchon-nisid, with mother for overseer, than play the same without her. In the for mer easo, if y ou forget sugar, suleratus or the oven, she will noL. Secondly, never allow a lover whom y< u wish to call husband, to de clare hig passion at breakfast, dinner or supper time, especially if you are forced to prepare the meals yourself. Be too busy, be skittish bo.anything, rather than allow it. axvhcmt" MiYaa.
