The fact that tho war ot bretfaeren had broken out waa known to many of our citizens on Friday night, but those who remain home at night and retire early, passed the evening unconscious of the excitement even then begin ning. and did not bear the important news un til Saturday morning, when it was spread l»rosdcast over tho city and county by the lie prints. On Saturday morning every citi zen wore an anxious countenance and neigh bors greeted each other and discussed, as first tn importance, tho startling, but not unexpect ed intelligence. At an early hour tho telegraph offices were besieged by hundreds of eager in quirers for the latest news, and when anv in telligence did come, it soon spread like wild fire throughout the city Merchants, mechan ics and laborers left their usual avocations and gathered in knots upon the stroet corners, spec ulating upon the reliability of tho published accounts and the thousand rumors which float ed around. Persons supposed to have facilities for ob'&ining the earliest telegrams, especially those connected with the press, were stopped at every dozen steps with the question, “What U the latestA call lor a meeting to sustain the Government (which we notice elsewhere) was circulated and extensively signed, flags were run up, aDd a spirit of the warmest pa triotism was everywhere breamed. , In the afternoon, when fuller particulars of the battle (not favorable to the little band in Fort Sumter) began to arrive, the anxiety in creased, and with it the crowds about the bul letin boards, while the cloud upon tho brows of many grew darker at the unfavorable news’. There was an insatiable demand for informa tion, which all the printing presses in the citv could not have supplied. At the plaees of amusement, in the evening, the same anxiety was apparent, and staid, sub* r, regular citizens lingered about the streets until midnight to learn all they could before retiring to their homes. The most skeptical wt*ro convinced that the hearts of the great American people were in the of this struggle. On Sunday, our city, usually i-f so staid and religious an aspect, waa nJt distinguished, save by the fact that business places wore closed, from any other day of the week All day, despite the rain, little knots of citizens, who would generally be found at church, could be seen on the street corners, and the vicinity ' of the telegraph office, gnd ail tue newspaper 1 offices, on Fifth street, the bulletin boarcs be. 1 !ng eagerly scanned by anxious crowds Tho latest news and “extrae" were momentarily in quired for, and to satUfy the importunate de* mind* of thousand*, half sheet*, with the new ‘ est intelligence were issued from two of the ’ news offices. The newsboy* soon learned th ; s 1 anfl flocked to tbo publication offices, where 1 they clamored loudly for papers. After being suppled sougnt the utriu-i*. and sold the * looked for “extra*," at double price, thus ma king something bandhum** out of the general excitement. Still the public wore not satisfied , and until a late hour th»*y remained about the , offices, watching the bulletin boardß for the la>t , telegrams. Many doubted the truth of the de* •patches received for a long time, but at last all began to fotiln down into the conviction that the facts as elated were substantially cor rect. In mo*t of the churches prsyers for tbeiaro ty ol the country and the prevervion cf frs-- ternal Mo- d>bei were .-i]»Trd up. Let us hope that they were heard ai.d r«-gardod by Al mighty God, by wh<'PO hand aione the most fatal consequences can be averted Fatal Accident —An Kngluh miner, named Thomas Hell, employed la the coal works cf Cou sin and Snodgrass, two miieo above M’Keesport, mot with an untimely death on Wednesday last, by a fail of slate.— He wrs taken out in an insensible condition, but was afterwards restored to comciousneaa, and walked with assistance a part of tho way to his bouse lie seemed to be almost free from pain. Atlantic and Gkkat Western Hail wat —The engineers of this work have com pleted the survey at the ground for a irack, from M.eadville to I’lica, eight miles above FraDklin, and will soon be in that borough The distance from ileadville to Franklin is about twenty miles, and this branch when completed, says the Sprclntor, will throw more freight and business to the main line of the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad than five times that distance of ex tension from Meadville westward. Pittsburgh and Connkllsville Kail road.—The Fayette Patrxot announces teat the bill aiding the Pittsburgh and (Jonneils ville Eailroad, which waa recently read in the Legislature, will not become a law tbu session, because tho Governor, even if it passes, will r»* fuse to sign it.
