The Franklin Sportsmen's Club will ake an attempt to break up the prac tice of starting fires iu forests about this section, and in a few days will offer a re- ard of $."0 for the arrest and conviction f any ersons guilty of this offence. - Xetrs. This is the mnl sensible move yet un dertaken by any body of sportsmen. One sweeping fire through a wooded strip of country in th-1 spring time or early sum mer will destroy more feathered gaine than all the hunters can possibly do in a seasou, and If the spertsmen will devote the time and money spent In spying out occasional pot-hunter, all well enough in it's way In keepinging down forest fires these hills and dales will in a short time be over-run with game. Last pring, for the first time In many years, there were no fires in the woods herea bouts, and tho adundance of pheasants last fall was something truely wonder ful, and certainly very gratifying to the true sportsman. Speaking of forest fires, the commis sioners of this county have dono a very commendable thing in having printed wo of tho laws passod by the last legis lature relating to forest fires, and will scud them out to the sovcral Constables and fire detectives of the oounty for their guidance, and will exact a strict compli ance with the duties therein imposed. If the people will give proper encourage ment to those upon whom these duties devolve, a tiro in tho wooods will bo a rarity instead of a regular spring, visitor as heretofore And not only will the forests be preserved but small game re ceive protection far more beneficial than all the game laws on the statute hooks or that are likely to be put there. Health. The Beard of Health desires to call the attention of all citizens to the importanco fa close obsorvance of sanitary laws at this season of the ycifl-. You can Ret It ut Hopkins' (store, tf Trying to Savf Her Son. Tho Ridgway Pcmncrat says s Mrs. C. B. DeRock.the mother of Fred K. Rock well, 1ms met with success in her can vass for funds to take her son's ease to Supreme Court, and has the necessary amount almost raised. It is not likely that the governor would grant a re prieve until the case could be argued, un less very strong arguments wero made and n w testimony adduced, which in the opinion of Daniel warranted that ac tion on his part. Mrs. Deltock has can vassed the county thoroughly and is still eniiaged in her labor of love. As tho Su preme Court will not meet sjain until af ter the date set for Rockwell's execution, a reprieve would be necessary from the governor. In the event of itsbeinir grant ed, Ridgway would not havo the double execution looked for, and Patsy Hsuya, the other murderer, confined In the coun ty jail, would have to go to the scaffold nlono. The people of this place would not like such an exigency. In the minds of a majority of the citizens the quoMion of Rockwell's execution is simply a ques tion of 'imo.and the governor or Supreme Court will not save him, although either may prolong his life for a short time. One hangman's day with two victims is bad enough for any town, but two is too much to stand without protesting. The peoplo of Ridgwaj have shown their good senso so far bv not trying to defeat the ends of justice and indilging in senseless sentimentality, but they would protest against having hangings on two separate days and disturbing the equi librium of the nervous more than neces sary.' If Rockwell is to bo reprieved, give Banya an equal chance and change the date of both, so that in the event of tho Supreme Court sustaining the Circuit Court the execution of both can be held at the same time. Hangings at best are not edifying spectacles, and the loss Ridgway has of them the better the citizens will be latislied. Rockwell aud liaiiya undoubt edly both deserve the death penalty, but there is no sense or reasou in hanging thoni on two separate days, with a doub ling of the attendent excitement and gruesome details.
