We t op, today, at the head of our colomna, the ticket nominated by the Convention of the lot Instant. In common with many others we !had our diappointments in its selection ; but as lgood Republicans we subnfl, and shall do our , best to elect the ticket, as it stands. Mr. Ituum, the nominee for Senate, served last winter in the'House with credit and distinction, and to a young man of ability and promise. He is an_ ardent Republican and will prove, no -; doubt, a popular candidate. The Assembly ticket is composed of new men, with but one exception—Mr. Savant', who was re-nominated. Mr. VAnstru, the city nominee, is-manager of Coleman, Heilman & Co.'s Rolling Mill, and is a clever, amiable and intelligent man, with a wido circle of friends who have all confidence in his soundness of judgment, and whose esteem has been won by his eieellent . business cepsoitlea and unblemished integrity. Mr. Pausnar, of Allegheny, is a young man of mark—talented, popular and deserving. He is, in our judgment, a rising man, and one who will do honor to the place to which ho has been named. Mr. Gosaneva Is the representative of the German Republicans on the ticket, and he well deserves the confidence shown in him by •, the large vote he received. lie is well known in the commercial community es a correct, ;shrewd and intelligent business man, and will ;make a good member. Mr. BAYARD our readers are all familiar with. He was an industrious d aUentive member last winter, and he does land need any special commendation from us to OMIT him the support of the entire party. Mr. Harr was a member of the House some years since, and is a man of large experience and fine business capacity. Ile is well known and high ayesteemed among the people - upon the southern tide of the river, which he is chosen to repre- Sent: The struggle for the Judgeship was a warm !me; all three of the candidates having ardent ?ersonal friends. Mr. Memos, the successful Andidate, is a well-educated man anda succees ul lawyer. We have not, hitherto, had much ' cquaintance with him ; but we are told by those 'ho know him that be is a sound jurist, cool ' rid clear-headed, and has in him all the ele tents of a good judge. There were many warm ardent Republicans who, for political rea -.--ons, preferred either of the other candidates; • .it thaConvention having decided against them, tey will of course feel it their duty to acquiesce , the decision. For District Attorney there was also a warns ',sd close contest. Mr. hina.za., who obtained ya nomination on the (meth ballot, has been As taut District Attorney f,v the last three years, d has, therefore, the advantage of es perience tta duties to begin with. Re is a young.man, ltuarious, active and , well qualified for the and is' withal a whole-sealed Republican. .7. ; 13 other gentlemen named for this office were ..; capable and deserving men ; and it - would a.= ?d afforded to great pleasure to have Euppon- It.itber of them. for Treasurer the Convention presented the pa of Goonitax F. This "Forest City," however, fur nishes the pedestrian with long avenues of shady walks. The promenades are delightful, and the commissioner; wearied with the routine of busi• nese, take frequentadvantage of them—many of them with their ladies. The exciting questions of the Assembly are now over. oratorical dis plays are over. The crowd has greatly dimin ished. Busineee! business' is now the order of the day. Before referring to the doings of today, let me go back to last evening's session. After con vening, Dr. Rice, from toe committee on Bills and Overtures, reported on the subject of notices to members elected on the different Boards, re commending no action at present. Placed on the docket. Dr. Rice presented also the subject of coloniz ation, recommending the reaffirming of the At sembly's action of 1948 and 1853. Placed on the docket. The Judicial Case No. I. was then taken up and continued till the hour of adjournment. ' This morning, the Assembly resumed the con sideration of the report of the Board of Publica tion, which gave rise to a lengthy discussion, ex tending till late in the afternoon, of which I shall write more fully to-morrow. To-day, your cor respondent has endeavored to recuperate his ex hausted energies by a little rest. Two weeks' constant attendance in reportorial capacity on such a body as this, requiring unremitting atten tion and labor from Boren to nine hours a day, is calculated to run the physical machine down, as I can feelingly testify. The Assembly will probably adjourn to-mor row evening. M. Vl:hat About Plaa'a Peak ;Editorial Correepoodence of the New York Trlbnee.l LEArEFIROBVII, Kansas, May, 2'2, 1859.—1 am here in the very focus of the Gold-at-Ma's-Peak excitement. Of the great celebration yesterday In honor of the arrival of the first return stages from Cherry Creek, you still have had tidings before this reaches you, probably; also of the suppers eaten on that account, if net the conse quent head aches this morning. Let me briefly sum up the conclusions I have drawn from all the information I can gather here, vin 1. Tlsere ix gold at Pike's Peak. Very little has as yet been dug. 3. A considerable though very inadequate amount of prospecting bad been done up to the 10th inst , which is the date of our latest advices 4. A great deal more will soon be done, as the snow only begins to be fairly melted out of the gorges of the Rocky Mountains, where the rich mines or placers must be found, if anywhere. 5. As yet this prospecting has not yielded enough to pay the board of those employed in it. G. Yet a few who have had extra luck, would seem to have done pretty well, and some of them (unless they lie outrageously) are now making $5 to $8 per day to the hand. The board of a rugged, hard working miner in that region ought to cost $2 per day. 7. It is not known to this hour that any ex• tensivep/acer has been found, and nearly every miner is still prospecting for better diggings. 8. Hundreds of those who rush madly off on a gold hunt across five hundred miles of uninhabi ted foodless country, in February or March, have either died outright of starvation, or have 'uttered and been famished to the last limit of mortal endurance. And all who have started in their tracks with but a few days' provisions and scarcely any other resource but the clothes on their back have probably stuttered, or will suffer, everything abort of death, and some of them will probably die. '9. There - is as much uncertainly and distrust in the Gold Region as here, and many who have reached Denser City or Auraria have turned back in disgust, which others would do if they could do it with safety. 10. Many who had gone part of the way have, been discouraged by the reports of those they met, and are heading towards the States again. 11. There is no demand for labor in any part of the alleged Gold Regione, and many are there idle, who- would gladly be hired and sit to work. 12. It is not yet decided whether any consid erable amount of gold can ha mined pith profit in the new Gold Region. Months more of pa tient and well directed labor may be required to settle that point. 13. As yet, lees than $lO,OOO in all, has been received on this frontier in gold, the product of the Pike's Peak region 14. It is highly desirable and proper that the capacity of the new Gold Region should be tested and ascertained. Those who are rationally employed in this work deserve well of the coun try. But there are people enough now in or near the new Gold Region for all reasonable pur poses—far too many fur the amount of food that now is or can soon be placed there. 15. It is not merely tally—it.is criminal mad ness—lo-rush off to Pike's Peak Gold-Hunting without ample provision to the shape of food, clothing, blankets, mining implements, and money. lie who goes without, rushes OD;f1 sui cide's fate. Such is the substance of all I can learn from the vicinity of Pike's Peak. I leave for that region on' Tuesday. Mn. Jossrn Slues, a well known reformer, died at Birmingham on the 14th inst. Mr. Sturge was born Aug. 2, 1791. In 1920 he es tablished the firm of Joseph and Charles Sturge, in Birmingham, which has ever since been rec ognized an one of the principal corn-dealing houses in the world. Ilia sympathies were con stantly with the oppressed and the poor ; but he was chiefly distinguished by his great exertions against Slavery, on behalf of peace, in oppoei• lion to the-corn laws, in the promotion of the principles of total abstinence, and in the estab lishment of Reformatory Schools. His first ap pearance in public life was in the year 183,1, from which time until the final abolition of Slave ry in the British dominions, be worked with Brougham, Wilberforce, Clarkson and Buxton, helping the cause with his pen, tongne and purse. Dissatisfied with the concession, and doubtful of the act which substituted the apprenticeship sys tem for the importation of absolute slaves, Mr. Sturge, in 1837, made, at his own cost, a jour ney to the West India Islands, to examine for himself the state of the negro population. Ile collected a vast body of information, which was laid before the Parliamentary Committee, and was-mainly instrumental in procuring the act of Parliament by which Slavery in every form was declared to be abolished in the British domin ions. Mr. Sturgis afterward published a nar rative of his voyage, which is still a standard authority on the subject of which it treats. A REPUBLICAN -STATE -COMMITTEIL—WO &Ng gent that those Republicans who attend as dele gates at the "People's" State Convention on the Bth proximo, shall, at some time during the Con vention, hold a meeting for the purpose of ap pointing a Republican State Committee. This is a matter of great importance. There is no Republican State Committee at present, and the interests of the party demand that a Committee distinctively Republican should be formed, to act on all matters pertaining to the organization. We object to allowing any "Colon" or "Peo ple's" Committee the control of our party. They may answer very well for all the purposes of the combined "Opposition" but we should have in dependent of this, an exclusive Republican Com mittee. Every one must see in a moment the necessity for this in party, .organization. With out such a Committee our party id constantly in {{auger of being sacrificed to suit the schemes tW politicians who owe no allegiance to Repub licanism, or rather who desire to ignore it, or destroy its existence. Next year wo shall enter upon a Presidential campaign and at the outset we shall want a Committee to superintend the affairs of the party. This Committee ought to be composed of the most reliable Republicans in the State, and the members of the approaching Convention who ore devoted to the Republican cause will bare a good opportunity to meet to gether and appoint a Committee and consult to gether as to the moot effectual mode of preser ving and promoting their organization.—Crmr• ford ✓our. In the suit of Penrose vs. tho Erie Canal Com pany, the Supreme Court has affirmed the judg ment of the Court below against the Company for $60,000. This amount of moony which woo depoulted with Gen. Rend, as a sinking Fund was attached by Penrose. Owing to some informal ity in the proceedings another hearing is to be had this week, at which time, a final decision will probably be given. This emit waa brought by Charles B. Penrose, for the amount of the bonds held by him and involves not merely the $50,000 claimed, but virtually decides several other similar suits which are pending, and if the decision ie adverse to the Company, will, we are unformed, result in the closing of businees on the canal at once.' The company would be deprived of the means of keeping up repairs and paying current expenees, and could not keep the canal in operation any longer without incurring debts which they cannot rely upon the receipts to pay. The abandon ment of this important impro cement would bo attended with serious coolie quences to the re gion through which it passel]. Toe public no less than the Company is interested deeply in this matter, and we earnestly hope that nothing will be done which will involve the closing of the canal.—Crotrford Jour.
