( From the AI!, ay Jourml, /Slay 27th 1 It is becoming evident that the Atietrians will not striae the first important blow in Italy. That they leave to Napoleon, and content themsolvee with preparing to meet it. IL was confidently expected when the eleamer left that he would hasten forward to precipitate a pitched battle, within two or three days. A very abort advance would serve.to do it, for the hoelile armies are entrenched within a dey'e reach of each other, a strip of land intervening between their lines, whose breadth varies front less than eight to not more than twenty miles. We gave, arm days Since, a diagram, roughly sketching ;the position of the combatants. We reproduce it lo•day, changed so as to show the changes in their lines "Thrill French end Serdiniene The French and Sardinians, at the outset es ablished themselves to two lines, at right angles to each other, tho one on the Dora and the other on the Po This position is almost impregnable, for the enemy in attacking one line would neces tinily leave hie flank exposed to the other. Turin the capital, may be considered as occupying the angle between them, and is therefore protected by both and in full communication with each. These two lines are receiving constant reinforce ments -the oue from over the Alps at the wee', and the other from Genoa and Aleseandria at the south From the latter direction, Napoleon is coming, and whoa he reaches the strongly fortified town of I'male he will lie in the field. The Austria., whose advance toward, Turin se+ cheeked by these lines, hove rottettudiciously avoided being crushed between them and are now fortifying themselves in two similar but entailer lines, facing them, ale one on the river Sesia, and the other parallel to the Po, and a short distance north of il. Their headquarters are established al Mortara, which is at the angle sod their reinforcements are coming towards Loth hues, from Pavia nod Milan. In advancing against the Allied Sovereigns., I lie Austrians would bareg, to abandon their for t teed poets, and at everealep would be spread ing their furor, and e :t.piently weakening Their position to out •rable for attack, but .o run t - for defence. The Fretiels, on the oil r band, at every step advance. will he concentrating their force, lie brier,. their Iwo lines nearer together Neter th.. ,v. the advantage for attack. Vercelli o which such frequent mention is made in dt . o t o. Ales, lies between the armies, att.' , . , lelyoccupied by reconnoitering parties ft .J 11. 1d3 At present the Anstrinne hold if . The Au seem to be occupied at present devssoo .11 that part of Piedmont which !tea within Lcie reach. They are levying forced coat - Omit... of forage, supplies and money, no, contpanied with characteristic scenes of cruelty. They are In the enemy's country, and the pas -1.110,2 of the soldiers for epoil has free license. They can afford, therefore, to stay where they are The French, on a friendly soil, cannot avail themselves of this cheap method of getting sup plies, and are in hourly danger of estranging their excitable Italian friende by some ontburet or excesses on the part of their semi range Zati ayes, who can hardly be restrained by dissipline. The very presence of an army, even of friends, is a grievous thing for a country to bear, and in time of war it is difficult to restrain troops from plundering and insulting friends as well es foes. The Emperor and his Generals are aware of this and warn the troops against it repeatedly in their general orders. As yet, all is concord and enthuaiam between the French troops and the Sardinian inhabitants: but this cannot last for ever, if the army remains inactive in quarters. The only sure mesas of maintaining and fanning this mutual good feeling, is a successful advance against the enemy. Otherwise the burden and aunoyanee of au army, of 200,000 men will soon produce discontent in the ranks themselves. The French cannot well afford to stay where they are, in which respect their situation is precisely the contrary to that of the Austrians. Ti a. k. and Tee Wes - rune also ree Coops,—The very seasonable rain which has fallen in abondattee, in this -section, during the week, has been of immense advantage to the growing crepe ; even to wheal, as the temperature hoe Leen quite low, no that it could not be injured. Generally speak• tog, the present. is the most favorable season we have had for six or seven years, fur the crops, both so regards the early and abundant vegeta tion, and the peculiarly favorable adaptation of the temperature and the rain to it. Our mar kets are teeming with the greatest abundanoe of fruits and vegetablea The accounta we have from the country give favorable reports of the crops generally. Corn has been all planted in good season, and a fall average breadth of land planted with this important staple. Wheat is approaching maturity rapidly, and some early varieties have been out, in Georgia and Missis sippi, and samples exhibited here the past week. From Tennessee, particularly the middle and eastern portion of the State, we hear complaints of the army worm, and in a few cases root, but we cannot tell to what extent the injury has pre vailed. In this State, Kentucky, Indiana, Illi note, Missouri, lowa and Winconsin, the crop promises well, and should nothing arise to in jure it, after this lime, will be abundant. in Pennsylvania, wheat looks very:well ; the same may be said of Virginia and Maryland. The grass crop throughout the whole West looks well and a largo crop of hay will undoubtedly he gathered. The farmers have their planting done, nod well done and with a favorable season; henceforward, the crop prospects look more aus picious. As regards fruit, complaints regarding peach es are quite frequent, rind there eau be no doubt that a large portion of them was killed by the (roots of the first week of April, but there wilt be, we think, a fair supply. Apples will be in pretty good supply, though not a full crop. Cher rice in this vicinity, are abundant, and ae re garde quality, superior. —Cm. Prire Current. AN A ATOM/MING PHOGRAIIII6.—Tbo Buffalo Repubfie nays that one Monsieur Blondin proposes to make an ascension on a tight rope from the Canada ebore to a point on the American Side directly over the Niagara Falls, by stretching a ropefroni the Canada side to a mast on thin side. The ascension is to bo made at night amid fire works. The same paper says that ho proposes to make, during this summer, several ascensions in one of which it is his intention to go over in a sack, with nothing but hie arms and feet ex posed. Ile also proposes to wheel some gentle man in a wheelbarrow, provided ho can find soma distinguished individual with nerve enough who would like the enjoyment of a trip acme the frightful chasm on ti tight rope in a one wheel carriage; and to make it still more inter esting and frightfully terrific, he will carry a RISEO.On kin back and wheel another at tho same time, provided two generous persons can be found who like to indulge in that kind of sport. By the Newark Advocate we observe that the assessors in Licking county performed their duty accor ding to the act of Miserably, and the aggregate return of sheep killed by dogs in that county, within the put year, was little short of thirteen hundred. The whole number of sheep in the county is put down at 139,605, We' believe it has never been ascertained what number of sheep have been killed by the doge in any one year in Washington county; yet, we very much doubt whether it would be ao great as in the case mentioned, notwithstanding the whole number kept in our county is between three and four hundred thousand. We should like that the leg islature of Pennsylvania would pass a law simi lar to the one in Ohio, as a means of eliciting useful information.— Wash. Erma. Tire RAITEAS CORPUS CASES.—The decision o the Supreme Court, in the-application for a dis charge of Bushnell and Langston, convicted of a violation of the Fugitive Slave Act, at the re cent term of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, was announced yesterday afternoon, all the Judges being pres ent. The decision of a majority of the Court, namely, Chief Justice Swan, and Judges Scott and Peck, woo against the prayer of the rela tors. Judges Brinkerhoff and Sutliff dissented from the majority of the Court. Whatever may be the conflicting popular opinions upon the decision rendered by a majori ty of the Court, tho people of Ohio will doubt less regard it as the deliberate judgment o'f the highest tribunal of the State, and will respect it accordingly. —Coluovsus Jour.
