A PIELSON ? Another important Slave question has been brought before the United States Supreme Court. It io- whether a Slave is a person, and amenable to the lawe of Congress f The case was argued a few days ago before Chief Justice Taney and Judge liallyburton, sitting in the Pirenit Court of the United States at Richmond, Va., by John Howard Seq., for the slave or her owner, and John Gregory Eeq., for the United States. The legal point is, whether a slave can be punished under the act of Congrees, which sap that "any person who shall take or steal from the Poet OMee," &e. A report of the ease to the Times elates that on the part of the Slave, it was contended by i Mr. Howard that as the act did not epecially point to slaves, it applied prima facie only to 'Teutons" known to the law as having legal rights and responsibilities, and who could be tried and legally punished ae provided by the act, and under the usual forms of law as admin istered in the United States ; Courl; that a slave is not such a legal "person" within the meaning of the act, being recognized by lOW only as properly. To postale thie mew of the case, he cited the Constitution of the United States, con strued by the Supreme Court of the United States in the Deed Scott case, as recognizing slaves only as property, and the Supreme Court of Appeals of Virginia, as deciding in Bayly vs. Poindexter, and other recent cues, that a slave has no legal rights whatever—that he Is not legally &person, but a Miry, as for as the civil law is concerned, which was sufficient for the purposes of the argument in this case; that in accordance with these views, this act of Con gress clearly showed that slaves were never in tended to be embraced therein, since the pun tehment is fine or imprisonment, and sometimes both; that it was impossible, In a legal sense, either to fine a slave or deprive him of his liberty, because he has neither property nor liberty to be taken away, hie legal character consisting in a denial to him of the rights of properly and liberty, so that a judgment emptiest him, depriv ing him of either, to any extent, would be a le gal nullity and absurdity. Other Incongruities and absurdities in the ease were pressed upon the attentionof the Court, and the reasoning in the Dred Scott decision was , -,led In show that negro slaves are not entitled . ...a..at a. ,i.- ; ..... iiii,..... . ad !.0 our sill to any of the periottai i %tun neon. GU GAZE Tire following quite characteristic sketch we Lake from the advance sheets of Henry Ward Beecher's new book, "Plain Talk to Farmers." "0 Dear! shall see ern be done lying"—An hon est old gentleman in telling us his troubles, gave great prominence to the necessity be was fre quently under of disappointing his customers, whose work could not be finished as soon as he had promised. After explaining the difficulty, be looked up with great earnestness, and exclaim ed, '0 Dear, shall as ever be done with this lying!" We have often wondered ourselves whether such a consummation would ever take place. 'Your boots shall be done on Saturday night without fail." Nevertheless, you have to go to church with gaping oboes for want of them. 'Your coat shall be sent home by nine o'clock on Saturday night;' and you get it in fact, the Wed nesday after. 'Will you lend me your wheelbar row? I will return it to night." You wait for it till next week and then send for it. My car penter eolemuly agreed to finish my house by No vember; but it was July before I could get the key. My wood was to bo split on Saturday af ternoon--enough for the Sabbath; it it was, hot I had to do it. My money was to be paid the text week; and then, next week; and then, sere week, and den as soon as he could get it; be did get it and spent il; and then it should be paid when he got it again, and paid another debt because the man treated him more savagely than I would. The strength laid out in running for this money, if it had been economically applied to labor, would nearly have earned the whole debt. The fellow never paid me at WI; but Death came along, and he pald him promptly. '0 dear! shall we ever get done with this lying" It is one of the few domestio manufactures which need no protection and flourishes without benefit either to the pro ducer or consumer." Burman Cass— I entilation.—Greeley, now on a Western tour, thus relates his experience. He always tells what he thinks, and sometimes, we suspect, a little more. "Coming up the Erie Road, I tried a "sleeping car" for the third time and not very successfully. We all "retired" at 10 o'clock, with a fair allowance of open win dows and virtuous resolutions; but the rain poured, the night was chill and damp; and noon every orifice for the admission of external air,- save the two or three huMbug ventilators over head, was shut, and a mephitic atmosphere pro duced in which the soul of John O. Saxe might have disported and labeled it elysium. After gasping awhile, like a netted fish on a hot sand bank, I rose to enter my solemn protest against all sleeping care not provided with abundant and. , indefensible means of ventilation. I tried one two nights later cm the Michigan Southern Road, which was much better, though still far from perfect. It is very true that no arrangement can secure a healthy circulation of air by night in any passenger ear while the popular igno rance is so dense that the great majority think any atmosphere healthful that is not too cold or too hot, and rather laugh at the wit than pity the blindness of Saxe in holding up to ridicule a woman who knows (and does) better than to sit all night in a close car with thirty or forty other human beings, all breathing an futons phere which they in twenty minutes render ab • solotely poisonous; but the builders of cars have no right lo be ignorant of the lawn of life with which they tamper. and two or three pre sentments by Grand Juries of the makers of un ventilated cars, as guilty of manslaughter, would exert a most salutary influence. commend this public duty to the immediate consideration of jurors and prosecutors." A MAHEI IRO MAN.—For Some two years past, a carpenter named Christian Reese, has resided in Northfield, in this county, a steady, industri ous man, and apparently honest in all his busi ness.
