The Tim.. wad their Iteepareeneinte • There is one effect which we trust the pre, ante of the limes may produce, a id - which from present appearances we judge will be almost a nectestary result, viz, to cheek the spending of so much money on books which are not only perfectly useless but absolutely injurious. The birth 'of the yellow-covered-literature bant ling dates back to the advent of "Professor" Ingraham, author of "Morris Graeme," "The Dancing Feather," and the like. These were the rage for a while: then even the street boy. laughed at them. Gradually there have crept upon the counters of the majority of bookstores, Intrinsically the sante "yellow covered" but completely disguised in costly, or at least splen didbindings, and gilded and lettered and em bossed in a way difficult to parallel. Now to the absolute nonsense, the undoubted sham which is embodied in such works, the maker adds a fraud by making themappearlike books of some real worth. When we gqve a chilling for an exao:dy similar book in paper covers, it was no great shave after all: but. to pay a dollar or more for the same trash in sheep, or calf, or linen, is a little too much, at least in these days. We believe that among all that great class of Our people—the vast majority in fact—who are sure of enough to eat and drink and wear, the coming winter may be ono of the moat profita ble they ever spent in a moral and mental point of view. Let them not go abroad at night to spend their odd change in useless dissipatba or in pleasures which neither enhance the happi ness of the dispenser nor of the recipient; at the home fireside, good - useful boots and valuable newspapers may MI up the Inng evening. These bores, these entreseenies upon our "splendid" socie ty in which Mammon is god and a grand show the chief thing desired, will, doubtless, be of quits unfrequent occurrence this winter. The time also, so wasted at them heretofore, may now be spent in improving the mind, or In doing good to the needy end suffering. MI of 113 will Ind It necessary to contribute what we can to otirry through the pinch of the coming winter whole sabre, and hundreds who already are be ginning to feel the .hand of want. We must quit ourselves like men, strike off needless ex pense and eche the present favorable opportu nity to do ourselves good in the school of bitter trial and distribute what we have to spare to those who hale nothing. To look on and la ment, and wonder whithe'r the troubles will reach and when they will stop is but a waste, a wanton waste of precious time and golden op portunity, when we may learn how sweet arc the uses of adversity and turn those uses into pre cious jewels to adorn our whole subsequent life. The Philadelphia Some American takes this view of it: "The people of the West, we have no doubt, will generally regard this as a lucky thing. Had it not been Fur the universal bankruptcy, these lands might have lain idle for years to CUM, ilia the great tracts in Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. so tong held in a similar condition. Al the present time it is impossible for any of thimeapeettlators to avoid a -sale, and this, so far from being a matter for regret, is fortunate both for the West_ and the emigrating East. Next spring and simmer, then, we may look for such a migration to the new territories and Statestrn our Western borders, se has not been witnessed for many a year. Oar factories and workshops here at the East are idle, and we fear they mast continue so throughout the whiter. Commerce is stagnant, in view of the disturbed condition of the cpuntry Thus, thensalds of industrious people, who earn a siabshstence by these branches of business, flhding this section of the Union no longer prof itable for them, will, as soon as they can natinally direct their attention to the West. From the New England and Middle States we apprehend s,general movement in that direction. • Thin will be a relief to the - old and, overburthen ed States, to be sure; but in gaining that relief, weshaU lose the most valuable classes of our -population-the laborers, whose native Intelli gence nes a/Ranged every description of indus try, and enabled us, even tinder the disadvant ages of a false revenue system to compete with the nations of Europe. This is no trifling loss, and the community will feel it severely when the recuperation, which Must eventually mine, shall enable us - again to se4 in motion our great= enterprises. It is a well ascertained fact that a large propor tion of the emigration to the. est is composed of our own shrewd, industrious, hardy native population.' Statistics ehow, tids clearly. The . Dative born Americana are the pioneers who rough it lathe wilderness. They form the vast' majority of the 'Squatters . and 'borderers. No new territetri is settled or opened exempt by them. They are on the advance wave of oar national progress. • Foreign emigration follows numerously enough in their wake. When a State is once organized and _admitted into the Union, and a name baa been 'gained for It es a proothdeg new Geld for emigrants, then the - surging tide from abetted begins to show itself. But the work of driving out 'singes, building towns, organising governments and moulding Institutions is dons by our own pioneer.. There have beeh men, here and there, who, by successful speculations or by the fortuitous hap tening of what we call "good luck," have found themselves suddenly rich; bnt who can remem ber a single Instance in which riches thus ob tained did the possessor any goal' Not one. The man who pushes his way In a hurry to the possession of wealth, becomes so wise in his own conceit that ho soon launches out into efforts to get wealthier, and ends by failing in all of them, and becoming a poorer man than when he be . gun. The old, plodding way is the only sure one. The following remarks on this subject from the Philadelphia Commenia . I List are to the point: 4•We must all learn eornething from the disas ters of the present times. Is not one of the les sons this—that the Idea of rushing into wealth on a credit capital In to be given up? That a mer chant may do something more in buying his goods than spending the money which he has brought in his pocket has been long admitted. Having a real basis in his own actual property; he may add to his stock of goods by purchasing a portion on trust, in anticipation of his sale of the same. Within certain Limit's, this plan has been accounted safe and wise. But the notion of doing 'ousinesa on a great tattle, and tiding into a fortune in a few years, on a mere borrow ing of money or credit, without any actual basis of property, is that which has becrazed the com mercial community and made all classes of busi ness men wild and reckless. This pernicious notion we should Olive out, and return to the old plan of cautious and safe operations. We should make up our minds that to acquire wealth is a gradual work. WiLmust learn to go about businesa steadily and patiently, contented if we can, by attention and industry, make some ad vance, and, along with diligence in our business, enjoy some leisure for higher anti better things. It is by no means necessary to be rich at all ; and it is certainly preposterous to expect to be come no in a day. The man who has aimed at sudden wealth, and falls back unsuccessful and bankrupt, hes terri ble trials to bear, which he, would never have known in a uniform course of cautious industry. Except that such a downfall may revolutionize his whole view of wealth as the great object of pursuit, and so secure great moral improvement, the fall is worse than never to have risen. His style of living must suffer vi9lent change; his 1 family must be mortified, his own mind harrow ed and, perhaps, permanently soured. That pro . greets which would have fully satisfied him, had he never known a reckless driving, now seems tame. Slow business Is dull to him, and mod erate life is uninteresting. The sudden reverse may, in some oases, be most happy in its chas tening killuenoe ; but the benefit comes through suffering. In many oases it ,leads to abandon ment of all effort, and to intemperance and wretchedness. Far better to begin so one can bold out. We cannot borrow daringly and be rea l sonably safe. We cannot imitate the advantages of wealth by a fictitious system. We must "has ten slowly.' • Oamsow.—Considerable anxiety continues to be felt about the fate of Oregon. The Conven tion now in session to form a State Constitution is largely democratic, and hence the fear that it will be made a Slave State. It has determined, we learn, that the subject shall not be agitated or discussed in that body. As soon 1111 the see. lions commenced, the Republican delegates opened the dissuasion, and a furious excitement sprung up about it, the cad of which was that the Convention referred the subject to a com mittee. It was understood that the committee would not report until toward the close of the session', and that the plan secretly agreed upon was to submit the decision of the question to a popular vote along with the constitution, in the shape of two separate clauses, one for and the other against slavery ; but the fear is entertained that there will bo no clause against slavery submit ted, but simply one in favor of it—eo that If It should be rejected, slavery will still not be shoo ttLyil prohibited. A very active interference on the subject Is manifested by the Intriguing pro slavery Democrats and Americans of California, who ardently long to see Oregon a Slave State, and have been working to secure that object.— They even taln clout sending a strong force cf bogus voters from California into the territory, to rote in favor of slavery, when the contest comes before the people.
