The cano yields a gallon of syrup to nine,of juice, on an overage, although some cane yields a gallon to seven gallons of the juice. The Process of boiling in very simple.— Three long iron boilers ere set side by side, of different degrees of height, in the upper of which IS placed the juice that comes from the mill, which is skimmerland clarified: IL is then run off into the second boiler, and from title Coto the third, where It becomes syrup• It is then placed in casks. This small mill in Chelsea makes, on an average, twenty gallons of the !syrup in • a day. No attempt has been made there as yet to produce sugar, and we believe no enemies bee yet attended any effort - eo to do; but tbo.syrnp is pronounced excellent for cooking purpuees.—Boatom Gazette. Two battle-fields are seen, in which the Prussians ahem .-equaiderable pride—Grosz,-Beeven, whore all obelisk :marks the mite of the victory gained by Bulow , .over the French Ciencral Oudinot, in 1818; and Van nenits, where the. same l'eneral defeated Env and Oudinot, taking some 10,000 French pris oners, and thus saving Berlin from being seized.: Of the latterfield I hod a fine view, an I passed the gently undulating ridge where the conflict. took place, I .was travelling toward Wittomburg, and soon I was reminded that: I was on ground rendered famobs by scenes connected with the Reformation, There stood the old Con vent, of Lino, and in a pine forest close. by, the robber knight, Hans von Hack°, seized the chest in which Tette' had his money gained by the Sale of indulgences. The cautious and canning knight had previously purchased of Teliel absolUtind for all tbe•sins he had commit ted and for all that he should commit. A little further on, lying in a pleasant valley, and sur rounded, as all the old German towns ate, with RE fortifications, is Juterburg. In its large old church, called St. , Nicholas, marked by two tow ers, one of which is. surmounted with a spire and ,the other with, a dome, it is said that the identical old chest, hooped with iron, and with a slit in the top to drop the money in, is till preserved. When the day shall come that the Roman priests in America will engage in. the same traffic, this coffer may be used as a pattern, for it has natiquity on its side. But will that day ever come? But here loin in Wittemberg, the home and field' of labor and burying plaee of Luther and of Idelaucthon. A • short Walk on a shaded avenue brought me from the railway station, to the city gate. All weal quiet. Though the city claims, as my guide informed me, 11,000 inhab itants, yet not a single waged ove from the station to the town, The grounds around the city were well cultivated; and as in all Ger many, so here women were working bathe fields, digging potatoes and carrying them in large , baskets nem] their backs. 1 was serprised al the Atrength of tbe fortifications, until I remem bered the struggles which the city has witnessed. In 170 one-third of the town, with many public buildings, was destroyed by the Austrian bom bardment. Under Napoleon it, was seised , by the French, and was only recovered from them bz 1819 after a siege of ten mouths, and a conflict in which the suburbs were destroyed. A portion of the inner wall.is old; but the great er part of the principal wall, with the moat and outer earth Works, date from 1800101 810. I visited firittlie site of the old oak tree, oat side of the - Meter .gate, under which Luthdr burned the Pope's:Bull in 1120, in the presence of the students of the University, then number in some 800, as.well as by the people of the city.: The old tree. him gone; my guide said it was M ot down by the French when they occupied the city.. hit on its site another oak true was planted, which now measures some 12 or 11 inches in diameter, and which is protected by -a fenny. Returning to the city, I entered the old Uni versity building, to see the roomewhere Luther lit ed. ft was originally an Augustine convent, lint was fitted up by the Elector of Foixony for a University. The University uo longer exists here, having been removed to Halle souse forty years since. A portion of the edifice is occupied by a boys school, whose busy tongues . I beard ne I'' i passed the door; while the principal part is devoted to a seminary more recently established for Young ministers. Entering a ride door and ascending a stairway, three rooms, were shown its-those occupied by Luther and' his wife. In one is an old table, exceedingly plain, on which he wrote. Near, it is double chair or bench, •rithout ornament, having two seats—on end of which he frequently . sat, while his Catharine . occupied the other. On another bench lie two large mats bookS which he had once used. 'On the walls hang portraits of Luther, with Isis full, breed face—of Melancthon, with his lohg, dea der, study-worn features; and of their friend ,and protector, I:hayrick, the Elector, Over the door is written in chalk, "Pew," said to have been done by Peter the Great, and which is now protected with a glass covering. In another room is a large case, with glass doors on the up per part. containing various relics. Here is, shown his hand writiug, his hour glass, his seal, the seal of his fondly, and sonic needlework by his wife—one piece being his portrait. Also , beer mug, and the stem and fragments of drinking glass. It is said that Peter the Great, when a youngrneit, visited the place, and being shown the glass, attempted to carry it away; bet being refused permission hedashed it. in an ger on the floor. If all the stories told of the Russian Emperor ore true, he must have been a lost young man, for they show in Brussels the well into which he fell when he was drunk. In this room is a large stove, said to have been made by Luther's directions. It. is of stoneware, and - is some eight feet high, and is covered with figures of various kinds, such as the four Apos tles, repreeentations 01 Geometry. Music, Math ematics, &e. In the third room is shown the Lecture desk which he used in the Hall of the University.' There are two desks of different elovatious, somewhat like the lulpit and reading desk churches. On the frontof 'the upper is a like ness of the Elector ; on the lower, four circles representing the four faculties—Theology has simply an open bible, with ; the inscription, r,cso solo, ( the . Word alone';) Medicine, two figures and the Inscription, "All medicines are from Ood: " haw is represented by the figure of Justice with her scales: and Philosophy, by a neat female figure representing the arts, but said to be the likeness of his own Catharine. There is also a cast which wee taken after his death, and which very greatly resembles the portraits which we have in various 'books. His descendants, five of whom live in Erfurt, have I presented a neat frame made of the wood of the tree tinder which lie seas, seized when he was taken to Warzburgli virie. The chureh—the old court church—in which he preached,, is at the other end of the town from the Cuiversity, sad on the wsy we passed the house of Melane- 1 thon, with its high gable fronting the .street, bearing the inscription, "Here lived, lentil, and died, Melanettion." Also the houses in which lived Isis special friend and supporter, Pastor Bubenhagen, and the painter Cranach -In the' market place is a bronze canopy, with a bronze ' statue of Luther,. holding in his hand an open bible ; and on the pedestal are various, inscrip tions, such as the first verso of his celebrated hymn, "Eine fettle Burg lot .tenser Gott," (A suro stronghold is our God,) and sises.uottes Work ,no orlrd's bestchl, Ist'.
