(..ox TeSTEADATO . EVENING oanTru.) A Mysterious Affair...A Missing Husband. On last Sunday week. a young Man wand Hail. In company with his wife, arrived in this city from Cincinnati, on the steamer Delaware, and put up at the Scott Howse After remaining here a short time he left for New York, alleging that he had some baelue9a to settle there, and would be back In a few days. His wife was left In the care of the proprietor of the betel, and ranee her husband's departure she has received several letters from him. The last letter which elm obtained, however, purported to have been written by Ed. Abbot, and was dated "New York, August 31st." In It he states that Mr. Hall and he had visited a drinking ca lms, on Broadway, during the previous evening, and while in the saloon Hall was insulted by a rough fellow, and the insult was resented by a blow from Hall. The "rough" then drew a pistol and shot Hall, pro ducing a wound which canoed his death In few hours. Abbot alleges that he had Hall con. veyed to a boarding house, and remained with blue till be died; that he was sensible for borne time after being shot, and requested him (Ab bot,) to write to her his dying request, being her her to "do as she had promised." Before death he became insensible, Imagined that she was present with him, and talked as though he was conversing with her. The letter, although dated "New York," was post marked "Potts ville, Pa.," as near ay Can be atcertained, the post mark being very indistinct and almost Illegible. The story that Hall was murdered In New York is 'wholly dis credited, es It Is absurd to suppose that he could be shot down Ina saloon, In Broadway, and the police know moiling of the strain. Mrs. Hall, bosrever, is apprehensive that her hatband may have met with foul play In some other quar ter, but the object In wrng thaabove letter Ls a mystety. She states that she has often _heari her Lumbar. d speak of Abbot as au acquaintance, bus he told her that he cared very little about him as an associate, and pro-beta rather poor onion of him. She has a likeness of Abbot, ich she received from her husband, bat knows very little about him. The authorities in New York have been telegraphed to, but their an swer might have been anticipated—Bud no such murder was committed there. Mayor Lowry and his, police have inti mated to Mrs. Heft that Perhaps her hus band has become tired of her and wishes to i. get rid of her, but she cannot believe tha such is the case. In letters which he wrote to ber, after his departure for the east, he expresses Isla love and affeetion.for het, and ehe cannotbelieve that he intends to abandon her. Bhp autos that he had served four years in the army, and bad married her about a year ago. He is hot quite twenty-one years of awe, and baa a guardian residing In Evansville, Balms, where he was raised. Her home is at Princeton, Indiana. They have lived very happily togeth er, since their marriage and she knows of no reason why he ebsuld a bandon her. When he left for the east he had considerable money with him, and come Vatted dtatee 1 ;91141, bat to what Amount has not been aseertalne& His guardian has been telegraphed to at Evansville, and Is expected to arrive here to.dcy. Mrs. Hall Is In the greatest distress, and being young and among strangers, her case has exeltel the sympathy of all who have become cognizant of It. The proprietor of the hotel is doing every thing In his power to obtain some clue as to the whereabouts of the missing man. The lest letter which lira, Hall received from her husband wan dated New York, and written on the evening of the alleged murder. Brace then she has heard nothing from him, and it Is possible that (If he did not dictate the letter ng to coma from Abbot) he may have purporting the victim of a hoax, and may yet tam up all right. -The most reasonable MLA otraou of the affair, however, is, that the Abbot letter was either written or dictated by Hall, and lbe he intends to leave his wife to lake care Or herself. A few days will doubtless one to unravel the mystery. Bow Between Blacks and Whites. For sometime past complaints have been made in consequence of numerous disturbances oo cuning at the house of William Chadwick, No. 9 Wood street, near Water. The merchants In the neighborhood have been very muck annoyed by the disorder in and abort this house, and matters were brought to a crisis on Wednesday afternoon, In the shape of aserlonsflght batweeto whites and blacks. Chadwick's house is a sort of headquarters for stevedores and "wharf rats" generally, and many colored men were congre gated there. During Wednesday afternoon a German attacked a negro and knotted him down. The neve remonstrated, but finding re- monstrance of no use he drew his net acd with .a powerful blow laid Mynheer flat as a Bounder. Just at this time Frank Wygaut came along, and not liking to see a white man knocked down by a negro,• drew a pistol nod threatened to blow the bead off him. The black man fled, andtrhe row terminated. During the saute afternoon, another disturbance was created at the same house—a negro being seized and stripped of every stitch of clothing. after *Mei he was ells ed through - the house, -and finally escaped ing through into the at, g 'cellar. Two men timed William Little and John Whalen were ested and held to answer by Il a charge of assault d battery, preferred by this Mark, and Wyg t was arrested and. fined twenty dollars and costs fordisorderly conduct— dr:tiring a pistol. etc. Wm. Chadwick, proprie tor of the house, was arrested and held to armirf a charge of keeping a disorderly home. The Destruction °lithe 'Ardesco 011 Works. We have but little to add to our report of the destruction of the Arden° Refinery. The Sec retary of the Company, Mr. Wormcastle,7lalted the same of the conflagration to-day, and re,- porta that nearly everything wee destroyed. Ong row details, and a number of new stills which had not been in use, were salmi, together with a small lot of oB—but the principal portion of the woks, fences, sheds, etc., were totally de stroyed. The loss has not vet been estimated. built is believed that the amount of insurance is sufllelent to enable the to the works, The policies are all compan held y In Easternrebuild companies. The company bad numerous con vects !unlined oil, and the loss from this source, as well as that occasioned by the stop page of these works, will be very considerable. The origin of the Are is somewhat singular, as It caught from I lamp, sitting twenty feet distant from the building. The wartime state that they smelt the gas. which was Tory strong, and fearing to enter - the worms with a light the amp was set down on the ground coins twenty feet distant. The air was very heavy, and it is supposed that the gas, In spreading over the isur.e of the ground, =nein contact with the lamp, and Instantly communicated with the works. Thera ware six men about the estab lishment at the time, but they all escaped with out Injury. Had they not been apprehensive of danger some of them would probably have been eitherlnjured or Med.
