' mostly all patrons of the telegraph io some extent it will probably be of inter est to them to know there has been a material reduction in rates • C'harged for sending messages from AO after Ist inst. Taking the tariff to twenty-flva different points selected at random, I find the new tariff to these places thirty-three per cent lower than the old, and I think the ave rage reduction to all points on our (Western Union) lines is about this great. Our company is also maturing other plans to increase the utility of the telegraph to the public, one of which Is the sending of telegrams not requiring immediate dispatch at greatly reduced prices. The now tariff system operates as a general reduction of the average rates without reference to competing lines, and it is believed will greatly in crease the volume of business done by telegraph. - Tho business of our office has nearly doubled in the last year which we take as an evidence of increased on terpriso•in our citizens. s.
