The State canals were again sold and large fortunes made in the operation. The Sunbury and Erie railroad company again made a very 'feeble attempt of prosecuting the work ',On their road, but it amounted to but little, and the work was abandoned. Eventually- the Pennsylvania 'rail road company? purchased .the Sun bury and 'Erie's unfinished line of railroad, put it under contract and at a heavy.costcompleted it. Governor Packer was not a candidate fora sec ond term, and was succeeded by An drew G. , .Curtin, of Centre county. In 1860 Andrew G.turtin, of Cen tre county, was elected the fifteenth Governor of Pennsylvania. Early in 1861 the Southern rebellion com menced. During Mr. Buchanan's administration seven States formally -went out of the Union and six more Were struggling to get out. Our forts arsenals,,shipyards, mints, cus tomhouse's and;post offices were ail seized in the South. A Southern Con federacy being formed in February, Wt! had two Democratic Presidents holding sway at the same time, Jas. • Buchanan at Vashington, and Jeffer soh Davis at Montgomery, Alabama. The. Executive and Legislative branches of the government at Mont gomery and the, Executive at Wash ington were puely Democratic, but, thanks to a kind Providence, the Congress nt Washington was Re publicati,.and to that noble band of men we are indebted for the preser vation of our government. . • lln this terrible state of affairs the Governors of the loyal States were natively engaged in preparations for defense, and in front of the foremost of those was Gov. Curtin, of Penn sylvania. He called out the milita ry force of the State as first as nasal- . hie. Every encouragement was giv en to volunteering. A division of Pennsylvania Reserves was hurried ly; raised, armed and equipped, and sent to the field by. the Governor. Perhaps no body oftroops in the Uni ted Statt, of the same number, did More hard fighting than the Penniyi- Vania Reserves, Their good servi- CtiS were everywhere acknowledged. Linder Gov. This energy and exertion never seemed to 'fail—he did not seem to think his du 'tr ended when he sent troops to the army, but he sent coMmLssioners of them to care for them, and report the situation 'of the sick and wound el in the hospitals to. the Governor and Surgeon General. The last natit el Mice at Harrisburg enabled the friends of those in the hospitals to Mid them or learn 'their condition. Indicated by a nod the person of whom she spoke, and it proved to be a lovely girl whom we, tad noticed at once on entering the room whose face, indeed, was ono of those which many men and some women witless which attract one's attention even In the largest crowd, - and which, though welet but a glimpse of them are easily ! recognised years after wards as having• been seen before, bearing upon them, as they do, some inexplicacable fascination beyond the mere Impress of intellect or beauty Our reportorial curiosity was at once aroused of- course, and upon Miss • Anthony's adding that the young lady w the heroine of a re cent hunt, In Which Glen. Custer awe two " Peers of the Realm" had figured, we unblushingly t. an introduction, which was indly granted. Miss Bathe Talm ge, the accomplished daughter of Mr. T. W., Talnutdge, of Columbuli, Ohio,-sem ed to be about nineteen years old— we say seemed, because our gallantry Was even toomuch for our professional impudence on this point—and was dressed in a rich brown traveling suit that well become her medium sized gracefulatiddashing figure. She will be a debutante this season in fashion able Columbus circles, having only left school, Mrs. Rtutney's, at Eliza beth, N.-. 1., in July. After finishing her education her father offered here choice between the usual round of dissipation at Newport,Long Branch, Saratoga, &c., and a visit to the prai ries, "those gardens of the desert, those unshorn 'fields, boundless and beautiful " for which the speech of England has no name, and a girl of spirit that she was, she chose the let ter. - The result shows itself in the elas ticity of her every movement, in the bright flash of her dark eyes, and in the bronze of her cheeks. The latter did not conceal, however, the flush of pleasurable excitement that retie as she k indly "rode the himt over again" for us. She seemed to be actually In the saddle as she spoke, and enjoying the wild gallop. We have never been - so enthused with a description since we Intanl the greatest "Lady Gay Spanker" that ever lived storm a house with "Gloriously, Mal I glo riously !" We wish our readers could enjoy the treat we did. It' positively amounted- to a sensation—a thing which,- theugh he may often create it int_the good public, your Bohemian rarely experiences himself. Our very finger tip.4,yet tingle with the blood sent to theta by the words of the elo quent speaker. But, tb the story, which, alas!' must be given in " the usual style." The excursion party,. bound for , Sheridan and other points hi the Far Wait, left Columbus on the first of September, and, after an exhilarating trip, reached Fort Hays on the, 6th last; On the Tuesday after teir arrival a grand hunt was organized. The military portion of the party consisted of General Custer, the officers of the seventh Cavalry, including S. G. Sturgis, Colonel com manding; Colonel Custer, brother of the General; Colonel C. W. Cook, 1)r. Lippincott, Major Bell, Colonel Thomas, and Lieutenant Nolan ; also one hundred privates and a mounted band of sixteen instruments, A large ; number of ladles accom partied the hunters in tunbulances as far as Smoky River Valley, sixteen miles from the fort, to ,witness, the day's sport if possible. Gen. Costar had also with him two distinguished guests in'the person of Lords Berkly Paget and Henry Waterpark, of the British peerage, the latter a scion of the Wellesly - family. These gentle men were escorted to Fort Hays by Colonel Gentry, whp was also pres ent. An encampment way made at Smoky Valley and from the top of a neighboring ledge the ladles were witnesses to an exciting chase on Wednesday afternoon. On this oe -4:1:4011 thirty buffaloes were killed, General Castor getting eight, 'Paget' three •antl• Waterpark' four. That night most ,of the ladles returned to the fort, satisfied with the p exciting Scene they had witnessed from afar off. Not so with Miss Talmadge, however., She was tired .of being merely a "looker onln Vienna," and remained with her father, brother and Mrs. - Costar at the amp Her wish toJoin the next day's gallop V,11.9 gladly gratified by the officers, a dark blooded bay cif Custar's being placed at her disposal. , Moiitestupon . the beautiful crea ture, she must have, been indeed the Earlypicture we are told she was. Early =ThinWay morning the par ty rode forth in search of the game. There were one hundred and thirty men and one lady, apparently a very Joan of Arc, leading her armed band. Ten milts of prairie land had been ridden across, when Castor yelled out the signal of game in sight, and the entire party charged upon and scat tered a herd of buffaloes that appear ed to the i westward. Foremost to the wild dash the fleet courser of Miss Talmadge bore her, until she found herself on the tntek - of a huge bull.— Full five miles of the prairie the bay spurned beneath his heals before the side of the old fellow. was reached.— Two quick, well directed shots from a Colt's revover that Miss Sallie cur ried brought the bison to a halt. • The big bull settled slowly lto his knees, bellowed - and rolled !over— dcsid ! Colonel Cook, whose gallantry and admiration had kept him from joining kirarately In the chase, and who had followed close upon - the track of Miss Tallmadge, new; ex pe.ctcfl to see her stop satisfied. - Not so. tier blood MIS up.—Quick's a flash she wheeled and made for alsee and quarry, another sharp gallop, three shots, and the thing was ever. Eighty buffalo were slaughtgred in this day's hunt. Custer killed nine Lord Paget six, and Lord \Vaterpar k live, but It May easily be 'imagined that Miss Tall- . madge was the heroine of - . the' day, and that the old bull's head that now hangs in her father's ball, at Colum bus, will be the talk of many a camp mess, and the theme at many an ar istocratic circle across the water. We earnestly rtythomend a buffalo hunt to some of our belles whose pallid cheeks and languid air form but a sorry contrast to the rugged health and buoyancy, combined with the most delicate refinement that charac terize the uppotrance of the heroine of the Btillitlo Hunt of Smoky Val ley."- • ' Perhaps the fuel that Miss T. slept but three nights in bed, nearly al ways encamping out, from the time she left home till she reached Cincin nail on her return, might prove some slight drawback to the pale young women in question, by whom-the 'easy roll of their carriages on Nichol son pavement is strongly preferred to the blood warming leaps ofa settled courser.: • —The comer stone of a new patito• Ile church Was laid at 31arvintown, suburb of Erie, Pa.; on Sunday last, by Ilish4 Mullin.
