Mary Kay Longenecker of Lititz, took part in a special seminar for young adults held here, which examined the roles of today’s farmer cooperatives. Longenecker was among more than 70 young people from eight states par ticipating in the seminar, an annual event sponsored by the National Farmers Union. Each of the young adults participated in workshops which studied the dif ferences between cooperative and other forms of business operations the importance of co-ops to rural farming communities, the threat to the future operations of cooperatives posed by anti-trust legislation in Congress, and means of promoting cooperatives and furthering cooperative education. Following discussion on cooperatives, led by NFU Field Services Coordinator Lee Swenson and NFU Youth and Young Adult Activities Director Cindy Domenico, the group toured the regional headquarters and distribution facilities of Farmers Union Central Exchange. * CENEX is one of the nation’s leading regional farm supply cooperatives. It furnishes fuel and petroleum products, fertilizer, seed, feed, farm equipment and other supplies to some 1400 local farmer-owned cooperatives in 14 upper midwest and western states. Longenecker is presently attending Penn State University majoring in agriculture. Longenecker said, “The youth seminar was wor thwhile and interesting. I met many youth from dif ferent states and received a better understanding of cooperatives and how they function.”
