By Paco Laborde When I think of punk, I don't think of Sex Pistols, Green Day or Offspring, even if they're the most popular ones around. I think back to the early days of Fear, Minor Threat, Dead Kennedys, Descendants and the most classic of them all, the Misfits. They. featured Glen Danzig, who left the Misfits to form metal bands as Samhain and Danzig. Violent World, a tribute to the Misfits, just came out and I borrowed it from a friend to give it a listen. I'ts one of the best tribute albums ever put together. Snapcase, Pennywise, Tanner, Therapy?, Prong, 108, Sick of it All, NOFX, Goldfinger, Earth Crisis, Deadguy, and Farside cover the classic Misfits tunes, such as “Where Eagles Dare”, “Ghoul’s Night Out”, “She”, and many more. Each band covers the song to their style, which makes each song even more enjoyable. Many people don't like punk, hardcore, ska or whatever, but Misfits are a piece of history in music. They influenced many of the bands that are around today. So next time you're at the cd store, be sure to pick Violent World up, or at least take it to the counter so you can listen to it. You may have a history lesson in American punk rock. Campus Ensemble, : led by Shatmon Bryant, performs at the Music Extravaganza for Black History Month. The Holiday Beer Dilemma: A Conisseur’ s Guide To Brew By B. Ray “The Pennsylvania State University does not condone the use of alcoholic beverages and maintains a strict policy against the distribution, possession, or consumption of alcohol by its students, particularly those under the legal drinking age of 21.” Whatever. As an over-21 member of the student body (you know, those people | who don’t talk to anybody and look pissed off all the time), I have frequented a few taverns and, yes, I have even whetted my appetite with a combination of barley, wheat, and hops. With St. Patrick’s Day approaching, three things remain most certain. First, gays will march in a parade somewhere. Second, someone in your psych class will show up wearing green pants. And third, a lot of beers will be consumed, all kinds and qualities. Please allow me to perform a service to you, my underage public. Here is a list of some of my favorites, as well as some dud suds for you to recommend to your father...... or older brother. THE REAL BAD- more after taste than good taste: Pabst Blue Ribbon- if ya gotta.....ya gotta Corona- boy, the lime really does add a lot doesn’t it? Hey, someone had to tell you! Oscar Awards: Year Of The Independents By Ryan Dougherty Academy Award time is here again, prompting all of Hollywood to begin praying for that elusive Oscar to be awarded March 24th. Once the nominations for the award were announced it became clear that 1996 will go down as the year of the independent film. In fact, Cameron Crowe's Jerry Maguire is the only major studio- produced movie up for the Oscar. Despite a lack of commercial success, - independents Shine, Fargo, Secrets and Lies, and The English Patient round out the group of Best Picture nominees. The nominations for best actor were a bit more surprising. Tom Cruise is in the mix for his work in Jerry Maguire, asis Woody Harrelson for The People vs. Larry Flynt. While Harrelson and director Milos Forman were credited, Flynt was left out of Best Picture consideration, quite possibly due to poor box office success and political backlash. Other notable nominations include Cuba Gooding Jr. for best supporting actor (Jerry Maguire), Lauren Bacall for best supporting actress (Mirror has Two Faces), Edward Norton as best supporting actor (Primal Fear), Frances McDormand for best actress (Fargo), and Ralph Fiennes for best actor (The English Patient). . The Academy surprised many by excluding some big names from the Oscar hunt. Madonna, and her box - office smash Evita were not included in the major nominations. Ditto for media darlings Gwynneth Paltrow and Matthew McConnaughey. Courtney Love, who earned admiration from critics with her performance in. The People vs. Larry Flynt , was also passed over. This year’s Academy Awards show should lack the intrigue and competitiveness of past years. Look for The English Patient, which leads the Oscar brigade with 12 nominations, to be the big winner of 1996.
