March 5, 1997 — LION’S EYE — Page 7 Your Cancer Questions Are Answered Here By Paul Basilio Cancer is the main cause of death among children ages one to fifteen. Cigarette smokers may have 20 times or even greater risk of lung cancer than nonsmokers. One in ten women will get breast cancer in her lifetime. Ninety percent of skin cancers are found on parts of the body not usually covered with clothing: Have any of these facts surprised or alarmed you? If so, you may not know as much about different types of cancers as you think you do. Cancer is a dangerous and often deadly disease that not only comes in such well-known forms as skin, lung, and breast, but also endometrial, cervical, and colon cancers, to name a few, are just as deadly. If you or someone you know has questions or would like to know more about cancer, attend .the Cancer Awareness program for men and women on April 1 in the large conference room in Commons. A speaker will be present to discuss cancer and cancer related topics. See Raquel Arredondo in room 138 Commons for details. Food & Paint Give Delco A Face Lift By Teresa Buono Delco has always maintained the campus well, and added new sparks to the physical plant. That's something often taken for granted. In the Main Building, the newly painted doors and frames along with new wall graphics look refreshing. - Recycling updates all over the campus help to encourage participation. The cafeteria’s kitchen received a makeover, and the food has been improved with a new “Gourmet” Menu. Current renovation plans are to replace the Main Building's roof and install electrical fixtures which have to be finished by the end of the fiscal year, June 30. The maintenance staff is making an effort to paint all the classrooms and the offices on the second and third floors in the Main Building. “It’s hard for the painting to get done because it has to be finished in one night, on a Friday, or over Spring Break,” explained Kerry Wareham, Assistant Director of Business Services. The painting should be finished sometime in the summer. And construction of the long- awaited Technology Building should begin sometime in July or August. Litapalooza! (Continued from page 3) Then, at 3 PM, the Vairo Library lounge will be turned into a coffee house serving cappuccino, various coffees, and a variety of teas, as well as snacks and desserts. All events are free and open to the public. On a warm winter day, leaders of campus organizations soak up the rays (I. to r.) Pat Conboy (Lion Ambassadors), Andy Scherff (SGA), Nikki Memmo (Service Corps), Mark Mesick (Engineering Club) and Dawei Yin (Lacrosse). Athletic Scholar Shines On The Court And In Class By Mary Doolittle To be an athlete is not only to be gifted with the ability to competitively participate in sports. An athlete, in the true sense, is also a student of life and the game. An athlete contributes time, effort and the undying spirit to be the best all around person on and off their respected fields. At Delco there are many respected jocks. Athletes, though? Well, not many people can walk around without the excess baggage of an ego. James “Jimmy” Halligan, a 4th semester political science major on the men’s basketball team, is an athlete. Jimmy maintains a 3.15 GPA as well as playing basketball. Jim is not a big star on the team. Jim won't be seen as the leading scorer or rebounder. What makes Jimmy so special is his attitude and knowledge on the court. The whole team respects him. Captain Steve Spinosa says, “He is a very intelligent man and I love him to death.” Jimmy is part of Project Vision, a group of select students on the campus who take all or most of their courses by computer. He went to high school at Cardinal O'Hara. Everyone that has met him has felt that he gives all he Rio is a very, very hard worker. Throughout a bad season we can count on him everyday. Whether it be at practice or in a game, we can always depend on him,” Coach Bill Wiley said. “If we had more people with the heart and intensity of Jimmy, we probably wouldn't be one and whatever.” Everyone that knows Jimmy knows they can count on him for help in their studies or just advice on anything. Jimmy will always tell you what he honestly thinks. Aside from on the basketball court or in the cafeteria, you can also find Jimmy in the wieght room, occasionally attempting to get friends to work out and get in shape. Jimmy says, “The best thing about being part of the team is the team. Even though the season has been tough, we still have a lot of good athletes and people. On some teams, members break off into their own little cliques, but on our team we all basically give a damn about each other. Everyone rules: Ben, Gavin, Big Nick, Big Rich, Paddy, Pralle, Scottie, Sexy Chris Dale, Spinoza, and superstar Egg. Even though our record sucks, our: team is all right.” Clubs Explore What Spring Holds In Store By JoAnne Johnson This spring, a myriad of activities are on various Delco club agendas. The . following events were discussed at previous SGA meetings. Tentatively scheduled for March 28, is Delco’s own, “Lollapalooza.” Five bands are confirmed to perform at this fundraiser that will benefit the fund for the Spring Fling. $5 per person will be charged. The Lion Ambassadors had an exceptional turnout of 45-50 students at the new-member meeting at the beginning of the semester. “We received quite a few applications,” commented President Brian Logue, “1 estimate that we'll probably keep half.” Another project that the Ambassadors are pursuing are getting jackets and shirts for members. The next meeting - is scheduled for March 5. "The Student Athletic Association sports banquet will take place on April 27 at the Italian American Social Club. Many Delco athletes will be presented with all-CCAC honors, among other recognitions and awards. The Engineering Club is anticipating a wind tunnel trip, and ~ plans for a, “self propelled” vehicle ~ contest is in the works. The service Corps have 11 students signed up for the Habitat for Humanity Altermative Spring Break trip. Also, the Corps will be heavily involved in the March of Dimes walk that will take place on April 27. The Cinema Club is one of the newest memebers of the Delco family. Their first outing was on February 18, in the Lion's Den, where Jackie Chan's film, “Project A” was shown. The Black Student League is sponsoring the annual Marcel Carter Basketball Classic/Step-Show Extravaganza. It will be held on Friday, April 11, in memory of the late Delco student who died after struggling with bone cancer. President of the BSL Sajda Brown ‘said, “This year’s format is different, to attract more people and satisfy various desires among various students.” After the games, the BSL hopes to have a party to continue the festivities. Brown added, “We want everyone to come out, and enjoy themselves in memory of Marcel.” From playing pool, to playing chess, to watching Pulp Fiction, there are many things to do in the Lion’s Den.
