Ousey, assistant professor of environmental sciences, and Lonnie M. Golden, assistant professor of economics, have been named co-winners of the Delaware County Campus’s Teacher of the Year Award. Dr. Ousey, a member of the campus faculty for 22 years, previously received the award in 1975. In addition to his undergraduate teaching in the earth New Academic Programs Planned for Delco By Caroline Kalafut In a recent interview, campus CEO, Dr. Edward S. J. Tomezsko outlined new academic programs in Speech communication, Education, Women’s studies, and American studies. Dr. Tomezsko stressed the degree programs were expanding to meet the future needs of students. The degree program in Speech communications is very near completion with a targeted starting date of next semester. Education in the urban areas is a serious problem. Penn State University hopes to help solve this problem by recruiting students from the inner cities, train them, and then encourage them to return home to educate troubled children beginning at the elementary school level. The trend in education today is toward more Women’s studies. This campus is prepared to initiate a py comprehensive program as requests by students increase. Dr. Tomezsko expressed strong enthusiasm for the new American studies program. Thames Valley University (TVU), a suburban school located just outside of London, England is prepared to enter an exchange student program with Penn State University. Frank McMahon will co-ordinate the program from TVU, while Dr.. John Tierney will be in charge at Penn Cultures of Africa State. Students at each university will be charged the usual tuition and will pay their own air fare. A more detailed announcement for our students will be made soon. Penn State University, Delaware County campus is now in the process of creating a Heritage semester. The great advantage of being located in a historical area makes this endeavor essential. Dr. Ousey received his undergraduate education at LaSalle University and holds masters’ degrees from Penn State and Drexel University. He received his doctorate in earth science study from Penn State. Prior to joining the campus faculty in 1990, he taught in the Cheltenham Township School District in suburban Philadelphia. Dr. Golden has done extensive academic research on a variety of economic issues, including wages, work weeks, unions, labor supply, hours of work, temporary help, and older workers. Prior to joining the campus faculty in 1990, he taught at Temple University, John Carroll University, Cleveland State University and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. He received his undergraduate, master’s, and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Illinois, Urbana. Visiting Scholars Discuss African Philosophy Delco’s award-winning Cultures of Africa Program continues this semester with a series of presentations on African Philosophy. Three distinguished African or African-American scholars will visit on separate dates to interact with the campus community in a variety of formats. Each visiting scholar will present a Public Talk from 11:30- 12:45 in the Auditorium, 101 Main, and then be available as a Resource Scholar in Moral Values from 1:00 - 2:15 in Room 110 of the Library '92 Art Exhibit Series Highlights Local Artists Artwork continues to be one of the library’s visual pleasures as the Friends of the Tim Mark Endowment once again mount a Lion Ambassadors Hold Carwash for Leukemia Society The Lion Ambassadors raised more than $300 in donations and pledges for the Leukemia Society of America last Saturday, September 12. It was their second annual “Mike Rhodes” Leukemia Society Free Carwash. Club members took pledges prior to the event in the front parking lot on the basis of washing over 100 cars. Pledges for 5 cents per car, for example, yielded a contribution of $5.00. Pledges were sought by club members from students, faculty, staff, families, and friends. : Last year’s carwash. raised $600 for the Leukemia Society in the name of Mike Rhodes, sone of Lion Ambassador advisor Marianne Rhodes, of the campus Development Office. series of one-artist shows there. Showing now and continuing through September 30 is the artwork of Marc Castelli, a watercolorist especially known for vivid rowing and sailing scenes that have attracted an international audience. Earlier this year he exhibited in Muscat, Oman, and has shown his work in many national shows. In addition, Castelli his been a participant at Exhibit 1991 and 1992 here at PSU Delco, which were also sponsored by the Friends of the Tim Mark Endowment. Following Castelli’s exhibit will be one by local artist Karen C. Fogarty from October 11 through November 12. She uses watercolor and and prismacolor pencil to create her unique view of the natural world. Her work is critically acclaimed and frequently selected for “Best in Show” in multiple-artist exhibits. Members of the campus community can -meet Fogarty at a reception in the library on October 11, 2:00 through 4:40 PM. Register To Vote! Learning Center. Each scholar will complete his/her visit as a Discussion Participant in African Philosophy from 2:30-3:45 in the the same room. The first visiting scholar is Professor Messay Kebede from Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia. Professor Kebede’s opening presentation on Tuesday, September 29, is entitled “Development and Cultural Change.” Two weeks later on Tuesday, October 13, Professor Lucius Outlaw of Haverford College, Pennsylvania, will speak on “The Challenge of African Philosophy.” Professor Tsenay Hampshire will Serequeberhan of College, Massachusetts, complete the series Thursday, with a talk on the November 19, “African Philosophy and Historicity of Thought.” This series is supported by grants from the Penn State Fund for the Improvement of Undergraduate Education and the University’s EOPC Program. It is coordinated by Dr. Robert Ginsberg, Professor of Philosophy, on behalf of the Non- Western Cultures Program, the Center for Ethics and Value Inquiry, and the Department of Philosophy.
