Vol. XXIII, No. 8 April 17, 1992 Fundraiser For Leukemia Nets $175.00 Basketball Game, Pie-Throwing Highlight Day’s Activities By Kaspar Stromme How often do you get an opportunity to throw pies in the faces of faculty members? Or watch a basketball game between faculty and students? March 23 was one of these rare opportunities. The place was the gym, and the occasion was a fundraiser for the Leukemia Society of America on behalf of Phyllis Payne, the secretary of Student Services. For a $1 entrance fee, the audience could first watch an exciting game between two excellent teams. After the game, which was won by the students, a lineup consisting of Dr. George W. Franz, History Dep. , Dr. Eileen Cooper, Biology Dep. and Dr. Ed Tomezsko, Campus Executive Officer representing the faculty and Chris Cowen, SGA President and Diana Miceri, Keystone Society President representing the student government were given plastic bags to protect their clothes, and a chair to sit on. Dr. Franz came prepared; he was wearing a rain coat. And then the fun started. The lineup was quickly covered in cream, and by the time it was over they were soaked. Some were more frequently targets, but everybody received a couple of pies. The event, which was sponsored by the Keystone Society, brought in more than $175, and was considered successful. Students enjoyed the show too, and as Tracy Zikowitz, one of the many who purchased a pie, said: “I think the price for pie throwing was fair to get sufficient revenge.” i Tracy Zikowitz ‘‘smashes’’ a pie in Diana Miceri’s face as other targets watch in amazement (L to R) Dr. Cooper, Dr. Tomezsko, Chris Cowan. When asked about students’ reaction to Zimmerman’s death, Richard T. Garrett, Director of Student Affairs at the Williamson Free Trade School, stated, “Students were initially deeply saddened by the accident, and now they are very angry.” He also added that there is ongoing grief counseling to help Zimmerman'’s classmates to adjust to his death. “We continue to work with the problem every day.” Zimmerman received the “Outstanding Student Award” from the Williamson Trade School after his death, because he was the top academic student in painting and wall covering program.
