8 Forty Thousand Men on a Strike at Pitts burgh. Only one iron mill la Pittsburgh Is In op eration. On the south side of the city everything is silent, for square aftor square, where the largest of the Iron mills are lo cated. Between thirty-five thousand and forty-five thousand men have been thrown out of work. Not only are mill hands af fected, but all the coal diggers lu the tuiuos connected with mills and the men employ ed in other branches. The firms which refuse to sign the scale and will go out on the deadlock are : Jones & Laughlin, larg est mill there, employing 3500 men ; Lewis, Oliver & Phillips, two mills ; Chess, Smythe & Co.; A. M. Byers& Co.; Graff, Bennett & Co., two mills ; Bparg, Chalfant & Co.; Lloyd & Co.; National Tube "Works; D. W. Wood & Co.; Everson & Moorum ; Pittsburgh Forge and Iron Company; J. Painter & Sons Zug & Co.; Phillips, Nimick & Co.; Aloorehead & Co.; Lindsey & MoCutcheon ; Wilson, Walker & Co.; Carnegie Bros. & Co.; Brown & Co.; United States Iron and Tin Plate Company; Smith, Sutton & Co.; Hussey, "'Howe & Co., and possibly Clarke & Co. The aotual capital that will be idle if the strike lasts is estimated by business men to be $2.3,000,000 in this county alone. At Youngstown, Ohio, $3,500,000 capi tal and 2500 men will be idle. At Sharon, Pa., $3,500,000 and about one thousand uen idle. At Newcastle, Pa., $1,500,000 and about six hundred men will be inac tive. There are dozens of other places in eastern Ohio, Virginia and western Penn sylvania where the iron mill owners belong to the Western Iron Manufacturers' Asso ciation, who pledge thoir honor not to take any nctiou not endorsed by the committee appointed to take charge of their side of the case, A Murderous Tax Payer. Lebanon, P.a, June 2. About2 o'clock this afternoon Peter Hauer, a tax collector, and Constable Leininger went to the resi dence of William Ullrich for the purpose of selling certain goods which they had seized for taxes. Upon entering the premises Uhrich appeared and with an oath declared he. would shoot the first man who attempt ed to remove any article belonging to him. Leininger went towards Uhrich, when the latter fired, the Bhot taking effect in Leininger's abdomen. Uhrich instantly turned and fired at Hauer, the bullet graz ing his shoulder and tearing his coat, and the powder burning his face. Uhrich then placed the pistol at his own head and dis charged it, the ball passing through bis head and killing him instautly. Leininger is in a very critical c audition. Uhrich served in the Twelfth Pennsylvania cavalry during the late war. t2f A slumbering earthquake threatens destruction to St. Lawrence county, N. Y. It is said that on a farm located in what is known as the "Big Swamp," which was until recently composed of level or low lands, small hills are gradually rising ; one or two have grown to be eight or ten feet high, and about twenty-feet in width. Rocks are also upheaving all over the farm. A rumbling sound was heard and a quaking of the earth is constantly felt. The farmers have become alarmed and are trying to sell out at extremely low prices. tW An old man named Carpenter died a few days ago in Vernon, Wis., and willed his son an old wooden chest and his daugh ter some real estate. The box was opened, but nothing was found in it, and the son was inclined to be mad. But determined not to be too hasty, he took an axe and smashed the chest. Nicely put away in some auger-boles bored into the wooden ' cleats of the box was a bright array of gold pieces to the amount of $523, which lelljiDgling to the floor. tW In South Carolina a negro was on trial for burglary, but it was proved that he crawled into the mill through a hole in the wall, unfastened the door set the flour out, fastened the door again, and crawled oat through the same hole. The jury was instructed to acquit, as there was no break ing, so they brought in the verdict : " We l f ad for the defendant, bat we believe be stole the flour." Mrs. Gilcher, of Sandusky, Ohio, had ber little son with her while visiting her mother at Camptown, and to keep him f rom getting into mischief, tied a clothes Hue to his wrist, and left him. The child soon climbed into the well-curb, the cover fell, and the little fellow hung, suspended, giving vent to smothered crieg, until res cued by a passer-by. 1ST A man spent the whole day in the railroad station at Bed Oak, Iowa, trying ro find an eastward-bound train in charge tif a Christian conductor. He wanted to start on a journey, but was resolved not to trust bis life to the care of a sinner. After questioning eleven conductors, and failing to discover one of the desired kind he went home discouraged. CB A young man aged seventeen and a girl of fourteen were married in Buffalo. The father of the girl Bpanked her and took his daughter home, and cuffed the bridegroom. The youth bad bis father-in-law arrested on a charge of assault and battery, and got a writ of habeas corpus 'or the body of his wife.
