Forty Thousand Men on a Strike at Pitts

everything is silent, for square aftor square,
where the largest of the Iron mills are lo

forty-five thousand men have been thrown
out of work. Not only are mill hands af
fected, but all the coal diggers lu the tuiuos
connected with mills and the men employ
ed in other branches. The firms which
refuse to sign the scale and will go out on
the deadlock are : Jones & Laughlin, larg
est mill there, employing 3500 men ; Lewis,
Oliver & Phillips, two mills ; Chess,
Smythe & Co.; A. M. Byers& Co.; Graff,
Bennett & Co., two mills ; Bparg, Chalfant

Pa., $3,500,000 and about one thousand
uen idle. At Newcastle, Pa., $1,500,000
and about six hundred men will be inac

A Murderous Tax Payer.
Lebanon, P.a, June 2. About2 o'clock
this afternoon Peter Hauer, a tax collector,
and Constable Leininger went to the resi
dence of William Ullrich for the purpose of
selling certain goods which they had seized
for taxes. Upon entering the premises
Uhrich appeared and with an oath declared
he. would shoot the first man who attempt
ed to remove any article belonging to him.
Leininger went towards Uhrich, when the
latter fired, the Bhot taking effect in
Leininger's abdomen. Uhrich instantly
turned and fired at Hauer, the bullet graz
ing his shoulder and tearing his coat, and
the powder burning his face. Uhrich then
placed the pistol at his own head and dis
charged it, the ball passing through bis
head and killing him instautly. Leininger
is in a very critical c audition. Uhrich
served in the Twelfth Pennsylvania cavalry
during the late war.

It is said that on a farm located in what is
known as the "Big Swamp," which was
until recently composed of level or low
lands, small hills are gradually rising ; one
or two have grown to be eight or ten feet
high, and about twenty-feet in width.
Rocks are also upheaving all over the
farm. A rumbling sound was heard and a
quaking of the earth is constantly felt.
The farmers have become alarmed and are
trying to sell out at extremely low prices.
tW An old man named Carpenter died
a few days ago in Vernon, Wis., and willed
his son an old wooden chest and his daugh

but nothing was found in it, and the son
was inclined to be mad. But determined
not to be too hasty, he took an axe and
smashed the chest. Nicely put away in
some auger-boles bored into the wooden
' cleats of the box was a bright array of
gold pieces to the amount of $523, which

tW In South Carolina a negro was on
trial for burglary, but it was proved that
he crawled into the mill through a hole in
the wall, unfastened the door set the flour
out, fastened the door again, and crawled
oat through the same hole. The jury was
instructed to acquit, as there was no break
ing, so they brought in the verdict : " We
l f ad for the defendant, bat we believe be
stole the flour."
Mrs. Gilcher, of Sandusky, Ohio,
