975 November 26, 1975 Board bids farewell to Charles: director 24 years, pres. 9 years by Hazel Baker Mr. J. Edward Charles, 676 West Market Street, Marietta, was guest of honor at a dinner hosted by members of the Donegal School Board, Thursday night at the Central Hotel, Mount Joy. Ragnar Hall- gren, supervising principal of Donegal, John Sauter, and Donald Drenner, build- ing principals, were also present. The event marked Charl- es’ retirement after 24 years as a school director and nine years as president of the board. At the close of Charles’ last board meeting, which followed the dinner, a gavel was presented to Charles by the current president Dr. William Landis. J. Edward Charles is President-Treasurer and chief executive officer of Donegal Mutual Insurance Company, Marietta. He is also president of United Mutual Underwriters Insur- ance group, director of Millers Mutual Insurance Company, Harrisburg, and vice-chairman of Federation Insurance of Pennsylvania. Charles is Director and secretary-treasurer of the Marietta Gravity Water Company, director and member of the advisory committee of American Bank and Trust Company of Reading. Past president of the Vo-tech Schools of Lan- caster County, director and member of the advisory committee of St. Anne's Home for the Aged, Colum- bia, and chairman of the board of the Columbia Hospital. He is married to the former Edith McKain and the couple has two daugh- ters: Patricia, wife of Joseph Gilmartin, Marietta, and Jill, wife of Dr. Richard Cole, Detroit, Michigan. Mr. and Mrs. Charles have two grandsons, J.J. and Jeff Gilmartin. Walk into History at Maytown Elementary Hazel Crankshaw and Rev. Marsteller led the students of Maytown Ele- mentary School on the annual Walk into History last week. The youngsters studied the history of Maytown’s schools and churches in preperation for the walk. Mrs. Crankshaw told students how water had to be fetched from Maytown Square for the high school when she was a student. “I'm telling you this in spite of the fact that you'll probably think I'm 150 instead of just 100,” Mrs. Crankshaw told the class.
