Page 12—SUSQUEHANNA BULLETIN Soccer team loses 2, wins 1 Before a fine spectator turnout on last Thursday afternoon the Donegal Indi- ans lost a hard-fought battle in double overtime to the E-town Bears by a 2 to 1 score. The Bears scored first in the second period of play on a power play up the middle. The Indians fought back valiantly and Kris McCue scored from 11 yards out with about 3 minutes remaining in the half. The teams battled back and forth, up and down the field, in the second half of play and even though the Indians had numerous scoring op- portunities, they were un- able to enter the Bear den. Finally in the first overtime period Pete Rios took a cross from right wing and sent the ball home for an E-town score. The Indians battled furiously in the closing minutes of play, only to have time run out on them. Much credit must go to the entire Donegal team: Goalie, Brent Becker; Backs, Paul Smith, Dennis Finley, Gregg Lindemuth, Dave Weber, Bob Barto, Jon Sheetz and Scott Brightbill; Linemen, Buzz Haske, Aaron Secreat, Kris MCue and Jay Long; and all the other soccer players who performed their duty when called upon. DONEGAL—HEMPFIELD On Mon., Sept. 29, the Donegal Indians invaded Black Knight territory and were defeated by a 9—0 score. The Black Knights scored early and continued to apply great pressure throughout the entire ball game. DONEGAL SUBDUES SOLANCO On Tuesday, September 30 the Indians harnessed the Golden Mules by shutting them out 5—O0 on the losers’ field. Brent Becker was tough in the goal, Dennis Finley and company were tough on defense, Kris McCue scored the ‘‘hat trick’’. Bob Barto and Jon Sheetz added insurance goals and a fine team effort proved to be just too much for the Mules. J-V soccer loses, wins draws Donegal lost to Hempfield on Mon., Sept. 29, by a score of 2—0. Hempfield slipped in their second goal during the waning moments of the game. The following day the J.V.’s traveled to Solanco to play the Mules. On Thursday afternoon Donegal battled the Bears of E-town in an exciting contest which re- sulted in a 1—1 tie. With only four minutes left in the game, E-town posted their score to gain the tie. Duke On Sunday, October 3S, the Donegal Braves midget football teams hosted the Middletown Catholic Eagles on the DHS field and completely smothered their guests with three lop-sided shut-outs. The ‘‘B’’ team got back on the track when they opened with a 46-0 romp as they scored in every period. Todd Butz scored twice, Duane Musser, Ron Kenne- dy and Scott Hoover one each and all four added extra points. Darin Kolp chipped in with another score, but the loudest shouts were for Pat Flanagan as he bulled over from 1 yard out late in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring. The defense meanwhile, completely out- classed their opponents. Leroy Claar, Randy Mc- Bride, Rick Ober, Pat Halterman, Steve Shireman, Rick Longenecker and Kerry Neiss shouldered the de- fense and along with the regulars of Bill Dishart, Jim Perry, Rodney Fellen- baum and Mike Rapp kept those big zeros on the scoreboard. Ron Kennedy intercepted a pass and Duane Musser pounced on a fumble to further enhance the defensive play. The ‘‘c”’ team followed with another big shut-out as they banged out a 51-0 win. The tempo was set early in the first quarter when Brian Carbaugh scooped up a blocked punt and raced in for the score. Two plays later Carbaugh intercepted a pass and went 4S yards for the score. Another three plays and Bill Miller return- ed a punt 18 yards for the score and Donegal led 18-0 and the offense had the ball wi KF ¥ for only one play!!! Tom Luckabaugh went 10 yards and Carbaugh 35 yards and at the half the score stood 30-0. Carbaugh added two more scores and Miller, one, in the second half. The Braves had S1 points. The defense was led by Scott Hostetter, with ample assis- tance from Tom Dohner, Kelly Claar, Matt Kauff- man, Mike Ott, Dean Musser, Mike O'Donell and George Rice. Eric Brenner and John Yohe each recov- ered a fumble as everybody took a turn. Not to be out-done, the ““A’’ team added the ‘coup de grace’ by pounding out a 64-0 victory. The Braves scored every time they had the ball but once. Frank Brommer got it started with a 6 yard run for the score and six points. Steve Butz added two scores, and passed for two more, Leo- nard Mummau scored three times, including a 90 yard pass and run play from Butz, Steve Meszaros tallied twice and Jeff Kauffman, once, as the Braves really went on the warpath. John Haugh led the defense with 2 fumble recoveries and Kauffman had one. Butz and Rick Sheetz each had pass interceptions as -the Braves shut the door firmly. Greg Laughlin, Craig Leh- man, John Longenecker, Tony Mann, Jim Binkle, Rick Breneman and Sheetz made the most of their opportunity to play anc performed outstandingly. On Sunday, the 12th the Braves will travel to Hemp- field to tangle with the Black Knights, starting at 1:00 p.m. Another three game sweep would look very good for the “little Indi- ns’. Lady Luck was sitting on Elco’s side of the field at the DHS Homecoming game last Saturday. The Indians carried the ball farther than Elco, but managed to lose the game 18-0 on a series of intercep- tions and fumbles. The Raiders scored in the * first quarter when Rick Griffe ran 18 yards for a touchdown. Griffe scored again in the third quarter, when he picked off a pass from Indian quarterback Al Brooks, and returned it 68 yards to the goal line. A little later, Griffe snatched another Donegal bomb from the air, and started a 42 yard scoring drive that led to Elco’s third goal. Donegal suffered a total of 6 interceptions and 2 fumbles. Donegal’s Rory Gallagher injured his shoulder in the game. He will be wearing a cast for the next three weeks and won’t be able to play for the rest of the season. Gallagher played well in the game, picking up 13° yards and assisting in two tackles. George Mohr ran 34 yards for the Indians, Stanford Curry picked up 27 and Daryl Houseal ran 11. Outstanding defensive work was done by Mike Leas (9 tackles and 7 assists), George Mohr (7 tackles and 9 assists) and Greg Galla- gher (5 tackles and .3 assists). ‘“We shouldn’t have tried to pass’’, said DHS Coach Gayne Deshler.
