Soccer team loses 2, wins 1
Before a fine spectator
turnout on last Thursday
afternoon the Donegal Indi-
ans lost a hard-fought battle
in double overtime to the
E-town Bears by a 2 to 1
score. The Bears scored first
in the second period of play
on a power play up the
middle. The Indians fought
back valiantly and Kris
McCue scored from 11 yards
out with about 3 minutes
remaining in the half. The
teams battled back and
forth, up and down the field,
in the second half of play
and even though the Indians
had numerous scoring op-
portunities, they were un-
able to enter the Bear den.
Finally in the first overtime
period Pete Rios took a cross
from right wing and sent the
ball home for an E-town
score. The Indians battled
furiously in the closing
minutes of play, only to have
time run out on them.
Much credit must go to
the entire Donegal team:
Goalie, Brent Becker;
Backs, Paul Smith, Dennis
Finley, Gregg Lindemuth,
Dave Weber, Bob Barto,
Jon Sheetz and Scott
Brightbill; Linemen, Buzz
Haske, Aaron Secreat, Kris
MCue and Jay Long; and all
the other soccer players who
performed their duty when
called upon.
DONEGAL—HEMPFIELD
On Mon., Sept. 29, the
Donegal Indians invaded
Black Knight territory and
were defeated by a 9—0
score. The Black Knights
scored early and continued
to apply great pressure
throughout the entire ball
game.
DONEGAL SUBDUES
SOLANCO
On Tuesday, September
30 the Indians harnessed the
Golden Mules by shutting
them out 5—O0 on the losers’
field. Brent Becker was
tough in the goal, Dennis
Finley and company were
tough on defense, Kris
McCue scored the ‘‘hat
trick’’. Bob Barto and Jon
Sheetz added insurance
goals and a fine team effort
proved to be just too much
for the Mules.
J-V soccer loses, wins draws
Donegal lost to Hempfield
on Mon., Sept. 29, by a
score of 2—0. Hempfield
slipped in their second goal
during the waning moments
of the game. The following
day the J.V.’s traveled to
Solanco to play the Mules.
Substitutes played a key role
in the game as the scores for
Donegal were tallied by
subs John May and Ryan

AY “8,” & “$C? Braves
teams win over Middletown
by Jere R. Duke
On Sunday, October 3S,
the Donegal Braves midget
football teams hosted the
Middletown Catholic Eagles
on the DHS field and
completely smothered their
guests with three lop-sided
shut-outs.
The ‘‘B’’ team got back
on the track when they
opened with a 46-0 romp as
they scored in every period.
Todd Butz scored twice,
Duane Musser, Ron Kenne-
dy and Scott Hoover one
each and all four added
extra points. Darin Kolp
chipped in with another
score, but the loudest shouts
were for Pat Flanagan as he
bulled over from 1 yard out
late in the fourth quarter to
cap the scoring. The defense
meanwhile, completely out-
classed their opponents.
Leroy Claar, Randy Mc-
Bride, Rick Ober, Pat
Halterman, Steve Shireman,
Rick Longenecker and Kerry
Neiss shouldered the de-
fense and along with
the regulars of Bill Dishart,
Jim Perry, Rodney Fellen-
baum and Mike Rapp kept
those big zeros on the
scoreboard. Ron Kennedy
intercepted a pass and
Duane Musser pounced on a
fumble to further enhance
the defensive play.
The ‘‘c”’ team followed
with another big shut-out as
they banged out a 51-0 win.
The tempo was set early in
the first quarter when Brian
Carbaugh scooped up a
blocked punt and raced in
for the score. Two plays
later Carbaugh intercepted
a pass and went 4S yards for
the score. Another three
plays and Bill Miller return-
ed a punt 18 yards for the
score and Donegal led 18-0
and the offense had the ball
wi KF ¥
for only one play!!! Tom
Luckabaugh went 10 yards
and Carbaugh 35 yards and
at the half the score stood
30-0. Carbaugh added two
more scores and Miller, one,
in the second half. The
Braves had S1 points. The
defense was led by Scott
Hostetter, with ample assis-
tance from Tom Dohner,
Kelly Claar, Matt Kauff-
man, Mike Ott, Dean
Musser, Mike O'Donell and
George Rice. Eric Brenner
and John Yohe each recov-
ered a fumble as everybody
took a turn.
Not to be out-done, the
““A’’ team added the ‘coup
de grace’ by pounding out a
64-0 victory. The Braves
scored every time they had
the ball but once. Frank
Brommer got it started with
a 6 yard run for the score
and six points. Steve Butz
added two scores, and
passed for two more, Leo-
nard Mummau scored three
times, including a 90 yard
pass and run play from
Butz, Steve Meszaros tallied
twice and Jeff Kauffman,
once, as the Braves really
went on the warpath. John
Haugh led the defense with
2 fumble recoveries and
Kauffman had one. Butz
and Rick Sheetz each had
pass interceptions as -the
Braves shut the door firmly.
Greg Laughlin, Craig Leh-
man, John Longenecker,
Tony Mann, Jim Binkle,
Rick Breneman and Sheetz
made the most of their
opportunity to play anc
performed outstandingly.
On Sunday, the 12th the
Braves will travel to Hemp-
field to tangle with the Black
Knights, starting at
1:00 p.m. Another three
game sweep would look very
good for the “little Indi-
ns’.
Lady Luck was sitting on
Elco’s side of the field at the
DHS Homecoming game
last Saturday.
The Indians carried the
ball farther than Elco, but
managed to lose the game
18-0 on a series of intercep-
tions and fumbles.
The Raiders scored in the
* first quarter when Rick
Griffe ran 18 yards for a
touchdown. Griffe scored
again in the third quarter,
when he picked off a pass
from Indian quarterback Al
Brooks, and returned it 68
yards to the goal line.
A little later, Griffe
snatched another Donegal
bomb from the air, and
started a 42 yard scoring
drive that led to Elco’s third
goal.
Donegal suffered a total
of 6 interceptions and 2
fumbles.
Donegal’s Rory Gallagher
injured his shoulder in the
game. He will be wearing a
cast for the next three weeks
and won’t be able to play for
the rest of the season.
Gallagher played well in
the game, picking up 13°
yards and assisting in two
tackles.
George Mohr ran 34 yards
for the Indians, Stanford
Curry picked up 27 and
Daryl Houseal ran 11.
Outstanding defensive
work was done by Mike Leas
(9 tackles and 7 assists),
George Mohr (7 tackles and
9 assists) and Greg Galla-
gher (5 tackles and .3
assists).
‘“We shouldn’t have tried
to pass’’, said DHS Coach
Gayne Deshler.
