Church Mount Joy, where we four are members, introduced the idea to a group of interested youth. For the past three years, the Sherks have dedicated a week every year to traveling to the Domini- can Republic. Mrs. Sherk, a nurse, and her husband have helped with the medi- *4 cal program, assisting doc- 4 tors by administering shots Judy Keller, Sharon Grissinger, Mike Kohler, Newt Kendig Program, organized and sponsored by the Christian Medical Society. This program sends numerous doctors, nurses, and inter- ested other people to the Dominican Republic and other countries several times during the year. While there, the staff helps administer medical care to the people and also helps paint and rebuild their homes. Members of the team are given the chance to share their Christian faith with the children and adults of the country. This trip started as a dream several months ago and running errands. The | Sherks report they they have been ‘‘revitalized’’ by the many wonderful and exci- ting experiences they have i had. The group of interested ~ youth narrowed down to us four. Soon the dream of hope shone a little more brightly. In May, a benefit auction was held in the rear of St. Mark’s Church at which Mr. Harold Keller rendered his services as auctioneer. Members of the church donated many valu- able and useful items; the women of the church chipped in by holding a food sale. Many of the church’s organizations and classes helped by donating cash. One woman of the church gave the youth the amount of her tax rebate to boost the total. Happily, the amount of money needed to pay the air fare was raised. work in Dominican Republic That sum was the biggest barrier to cross--the rest was minor. Since then, the four travelers have had sore arms for a few days because of the necessary shots, graciously administered at no cost by Dr. Newton Kendig. The air travel arrangements have been made. We four will leave from Kennedy Airport in New York on Pan American Airlines. Only one of us has ever studied Spanish. Two have had French, and two have had German, but those languages won’t help us in a Spanish-speaking country! We'll just have to depend on “El diccionario’ and sign language. When we pack our suit- cases, we will have to be careful. It is not acceptable in the Dominican Republic for men to wear shorts in public or for women to wear either shorts or slacks. Only at ‘‘La Posada’’, where we’ll be staying can we dress as we do in Mount Joy. We are hoping for cool weather. It’s not uncommon, we've been told to wake up and see a lizard on the ceiling. Lizards are not harmful; they just keep the insect population under control. This trip is bound to be a new, interesting, and re- warding experience. We enthusiasts can’t wait to go.
