SUSQUEHANNA BULLETIN — Page 7 Mr, and Mrs, Simeon Horton at home with some of many trophies won in rose contests, by Hazel Baker Mrs. Simeon Hortoa, 313 W. Donegal Street, Mount Joy, has assumed the presi- dency of the local Chapter of the Needlework Guild of America. This is her second stint in this position after an interlude of 12 years. She headed the group from 1945 to 1962. She also served as District Chairman until 1974. The Mount Joy chapter includes Marietta, Maytown, and rural areas. Mrs. Horton spends her free time during the year crocheting afghans for shut- ins and elderly persons in nursing homes. In her capacity as the local president of Needle- work Guild of America she is on the look-out for new directors who in turn solicit 11 new members who are expected to contribute at least two new garments per year in lieu of dues. The slogan of the chari- table organization is “one to wash and one to wear.” An investigation commit- tee, appointed by the presi- dent, makes a survey of persons worthy of receiving the garments each October. A. distribution committee distributes the items after the “ingathering.” Mrs. Horton stated, “Few organizations ask as little Mrs.Horton heads Guild of their members and yet do as much good as the Needlework Guild.” The first session of this group met in the home of the late Mrs. Clarence Schock in 1920. The Na- tional organization is 90 years old this year. As a past president repeated re- cently “NWG shares, sym- pathizes, and serves the pro- blems of others and has put into practice the Golden Rule.” Mrs: Horton, originally from Towanda, came to Mount Joy in 1933 with her husband, Simeon, who re- tired in January as manager of Mount Joy Farmers Co- operative. The couple’s chief hobby is growing roses of which there are more than 150 bushes in their garden. Numerous prizes have been won by the Hor- ton’s from the Lancaster Men’s Garden Club and the Elizabethtown Garden Club to which they both belong. Members of the St. Mark’s Methodist Church, the Hor- tons are former proprietors of the Mount Joy Frozen Food Lockers. Mrs. Hor- ton is also Past Matron of the Elizabethtown Chapter Order of the Eastern Star and a Charter member of the Business and Profess- ional Women’s Club.
