Joe Shaeffer ‘Man of the Hour’ at Mount Joy Rotary Club meeting The Mount Joy Rotary Club surprised and honored Joe Shaeffer at their Tuesday, June 24, meeting. District Rotary Governor Jon LaFaver presented to Joe membership to the Paul Harris Fellowship, the high- est honor in Rotary. Paul Harris started Rotary in 1905. DHS student Phil Landis, tes, comeing so attends School for Arts Phil Landis has received notice from the Lancaster- Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13 that he has been selected to attend the eighth annual Governor’s School for the Arts to be held at Bucknell University starting July 6. He is among 325 artist- ically talented students selected from 3200 high school sophomore and junior applicants to receive full scholarships to participate in the residential summer arts program. Selection was based on results of highly competitive local and state- wide screenings. Phil was selected for Photographic Arts. Other art areas are creative writing, dance, art, music and animation. While at the school, the students will receive five weeks intensive training in the art area of their choice as well as related arts experiences. The program places major emphasis on developing young leaders who will be eager to share their talents and help promote the arts when they return to their home schools and communities. Phil will be a senior at Donegal High School and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Landis, R.D.#1, Mount Joy. Hostetter, Earl Koser, pres- ident of the Mount Joy Area Chamber of Commerce, and Lester Koder. Joe was hailed as the ‘‘Mount Joy historian,’’ ‘‘Mr. Mount Joy Rotary,” and ‘‘Mr. Mount Joy.” Joe and his wife Grace recently celebrated their S0th wedding anniversary and Grace was at the Rotary meeting to help in the celebration. Joe Shaeffer is president of the Mount Joy Social Welfare Committee and president of the Mount Joy Leisure Club. He serves as secretary of the Mount Joy Area Chamber of Commerce and is currently treasurer of the Mount Joy Rotary. In addition, he has been editor of Rotary Joy, the weekly Rotary newsletter, for 37 years. He served as pres- dent of the Rotary in the 1948-49 term. He and his wife are members of Chiques United Methodist Church where Joe serves as a Sunday School teacher. He and his [continued on page 4] The dates for the Marietta Jaycees’ ‘‘Stay at Home” fourth of July events were incorrectly listed in last week's issue of the Susque- hanna Times. The first annual ‘‘Run for Inde- pendence will be held this Saturday, July S, at 10 am. The starting spot is the Marietta War Memorial Park. The run will include both two and five mile runs through the historic streets of Marietta. Day-of-the-run registra- tion will be held from 8:30 to 9:30 am at the park and awards will be presented following the five mile run. Awards will be given to the over-all winner and to first place finishers in each SO 2,0 8 4 2 MES of the following age groups in both races for both men and women: Youth to 18 years; 19-29 years; 30 to 39 years; 40 to 49 years; and 50 and over. The ‘‘Stay at Home” event also includes one of the largest firworks displays in Central Pennsylvania to be held at Memorial Park Saturday night. Here is a timetable for the three day event. Thursday, July 3 6 pm—Kick off time with the beginning of the carnival 7 pm—Music by the group Hunter, a local band playing contemporary. music Friday, July 4 12 noon—Carnival begins 1 pm—games for children ages four to ten and a FIFTEEN CENTS special visit from a mouse loved by all 7 pm—‘The Captain” from radio station Q106 playing favorite songs and providing entertainment Saturday, July 5 10 am—the first annual “Run for Independence’ starting at the park and taking participants in the two and five mile races through the streets of Marietta 7 pm—a return engage- ment by the group Hunter Following the perform- ance by Hunter the fire- works will go off. This year’s show includes a new section of oriental shells. Proceeds from the three day event will go toward the Marietta Jaycees’ school renovation project. Mount Joy Lions swim team wins first meet of season The Mount Joy Lions swim team hosted the opening meet of the 1980 season with Kakaleko-Den- ver. The Mount Joy team came out ahead with a 274 to 141 score. The team is coached by Eugene Funk and Rebecca Zimmerman. Two of the Mount Joy swimmers broke team re- cords at the first meet. Chad Wetzel, in the eight and under boys group, set a record for the backstroke with a time of 25.6. Scott Ney, ten and under boys, swam the 25 meter butterfly in 21.0.
