Solar energy modifications available The Solar Project (a branch of the Lancaster County Community Action Program), now in its fourth year, is looking for eligible people who are interested in solar energy. Under a new grant the Cancer Swim-A-Thon The Mount ‘Joy Swim Team is once again taking part in the Cancer Society’s Swim-A-Thon. Members of the local team are soliciting pledges now through July 19. The swim will be held sometime during the week of July 19. Persons who do not know a member of the team and wish to contribute to the event should contact Mrs. Beverly Dishart at 653-5363; Coach Gene Funk at 653- 2536 after 12:00 noon; or the Mount Joy Pool at 653-1101. You will be put in touch with members of the team. Solar Project will be modify- ing twelve homes using energy conservation and solar design principles. The goal is to reduce energy bills by 10% to S0%. There is no charge to the homeowner for this service. UEHANNA 136 participants took part in the first annual ‘‘Run for Independence’’ sponsored by the Marietta Jaycees last Saturday, July S. Two and five mile runs took runners through the streets of Marietta. James Ibaugh was Jaycee project chairman for the event which was a part of the three-day fourth of July ‘Stay at Home’’ celebra- tion. The event also consist- ed of a carnival and fireworks. Overall winner of the five mile run was Greg Hershey of Columbia who has an excellent record in high school cross country. Greg's winning time was 26 minutes and 41 seconds. Greg also took first place in the 18 years and under category. The second place finisher was Robie Pecht, 26:52, who also topped the 19 to 29 age group. Charles Leader, with a time of 28:54 won the 30 to 39 age bracket; Ben Heiser headed the 40 to 49 age group at 29:47; and Clyde Sweigart received the first place certificate for the over S0 age group. Donna McLain captured the women’s top spot with a time of 31:57. She was also first in the 18 and under group. Brenda Barley, 36:19, won the 19 to 29 age division; Abby Rudisill took the 30 to 39 age group with a time of 45:24; and Beverly Sweigart received the 40 to S0 age prize with a time of 38:22. 0 2 5 SOL 19° = oh ™ . oth ay > op > 0% \ Ae’ < Vos Re FIFTEEN CENTS youth is winner Greg Hersk 2y of Columbia, winner of the first annual “Run for Independence’’ held in Marietta. For photo- graphs of additional winners see page 2. In the two mile race, which included runners loosening up for the five mile event, David Dubbie took first place with a time of 10:27. Ron Bomberger finished second at 10:31 and Robert Vasile was third at 10:42. Bernie Purrcell won the women’s two mile with a time of 15:50. Sue Meszaros finished second at 16:34 and Ann Post was third at 16:39. One runner suffered from heat exhaustion and was transported to the St. Joseph’s Hosptial via the heart unit.
