[The following article is reprinted from ‘‘Rotary Joy,” the weekly publica- tion of the Mount Joy Rotary Club. —Ed.] Here are some interest- ing laws still on the statute books of our various states. In Evansville. Indiana is against the law to sell hamburgers on Sunday. Here is a cute one. In Kansas an old state law states that one must not eat snakes on Sunday or rattlesnake meat in public. How about this one. A citizen may not carry a lunch pail on the public streets in Riverside, Cali- fornia. Now get this. In Rich- mond, Virginia it is illegal to match coins in public to see who pays the bill. In Houston, Texas the law stipulates that you cannot buy rye bread, goose liver or limburger cheese on Sunday, and if you do, vou cannot take it out. Here is a sad one. Kansas state law forbids one to serve ice cream or cherry pie on the Sabbath. Try this one. In Connec- ticut, pickles which, when dropped twelve inches. collapse in their own juice are illegal. They must remain whole and even bounce. Why ‘give you this information? Very simple. The program planned for today was our because the speaker, at the last minute could not come to Mount Joy. And when we went to press, your editor did not know what would take its place. But just sit back, relax, happen. something will [This reminds us of a true story. The Illinois State Legislature once came perilously close to passing a law declaring that the value of pi, the ratio of a circle’s circum- ference to its diameter, should henceforth in the State of Illinois be exactly 3, instead of the actual value of 3.14... [where the dots indicate that the decimal goes on forever —pi is a ‘‘transcendental’ number which cannot be written out]. The bill to declare pi=~> was introduced by a legis lator who wanted to pleas: a constituent who ha written advising that th law be declared. The con- stituent was a crank, whe thought Euclid a charlatar and wrote voluminous tex:: attacking the professors ¢ mathematics in local co! leges who failed to suppor his crazy theories. The pi=3 bill wa: initially sent to the commit- tee on swamps, for some reason, and eventually forwarded to the house with a recommendation for passage. As a routine bill, it undoubtedly would have passed into law except for a happy coincidence. A mathematician hap- pened to be visiting the legislature that day, and hearing of the bill, rushed to inform the solons of their impending error, and arrived in time. But for chance, pi might still be equal to 3 in the State of Illinois. —Ed.] (52 issues per year) for: #1, Marietta, PA 17547. 0 I | fBsescs Please send me the SUSQUEHANNA TIMES weekly Lancaster County——1 year—$6.00 (outside Lancaster County)——1 year—$6.50 Mail to: SUSQUEHANNA TIMES, Box 75-A, R.D.
