A final national publicity stunt, that of Conrad Birdie bidding farewell to all by giving a typical teenage girl an all-American kiss on national TV, Kim MacAfee in Sweet Apple, Ohio, wins the honor. The arrival of Birdie in Sweet Apple causes wholesale swooning by both the old and young. Birdie says that his success is due to the fact that he is ‘‘Honestly Sincere’” when he sings. The quiet little town and the MacAfee household is completely upset by the visiting dignitary. Parents become very upset with their children and, likewise, the teenagers with their par- ents (sound familiar?). Many humorous situations occur throughout the story as it gives insight into everyday life that is very in competition. Along with his carving he developed an interest in the antique working decoy and set about finding as much information as possible about the stools that were made and used on the Susquehanna River near his home. He now owns a sizeable collection and is considered to be an authority on the Pennsyl- vania Dutch Decoy. « His recently published book ‘Susquehanna River De- coys’’ presents more than 150 decoys along with their histories. He is a charter member of the Yorkarvers Woodcarving Club centered in York, and is an enthusiastic supporter of the local chapter of Ducks Unlimited.
