Page 16 - SUSQUEHANNA TIMES Pioneer Co. to teach first aid technique On December 14, the Pioneer Fire Co., of Mari- etta, will present a ‘‘Com- munity Awareness’ dem- onstration on first aid for foreign body obstruction of the airway. (Blockage of the breathing passages) According to the National Safety Council, airway ob- struction ranks sixth as a cause of accidental death in the "United States and accounted for approximate- ly 2,900 deaths in 1974. Since airway obstruction usually occurs during eat- ing and the holiday season is upon us, the members of the Pioneer Fire Co., felt this would be a very bene- ficial program to present to the public. The program will be directed by Assistant Fire Chief, Stephen M. Bailey, who is also a member of the Marietta Ambulance Crew and a Standard First Aid Instructor for the American Red Cross. Points covered in the demonstration will be causes, recognition, and treatment of airway ob- struction. There is no cost for the program, and no donations will be asked. The mem- bers of Pioneer are offering this program for the benefit and information of the residents of the commun- ity. The demonstration will start at 7:30 p.m., on Tuesday, December 14, 1976 in the company quar- ters on Waterford Avenue in Marietta. The East Donegal Jaycees have put up the Christmas lights in Maytown Square. Letter to the editor Citizens of Maytown Once again the local Jaycees have decorated our Square for the Christmas season. On Saturday, No- vember 27, they erected the figures, including sev- eral new ones they had purchased; installed the lighting; and made the necessary electrical con- nections. Though a portion of the cost was. paid. by our Civic Association, the initiative and work came from these young men; and we com- mend and thank them for providing for us this fitting reminder of the Christ Child’s birth. Unfortunately — there seems to be a few who do not appreciate this effort. Less than twenty-four hours after its erection, a dozen light bulbs were stolen or broken; as of this time of writing, forty-six bulbs are missing. As chairman. of Square Committee for the remainder of this year, I have recommended to the Jaycees that they replace none of the missing bulbs, at least not until Christmas Eve. Perhaps the darkened spaces may cause the thieves a sense of remorse and shame. Paul N. Pennell, Barb Landis, Lucy Shumaker, Dennis Shumaker, and Jim Landis. Letter to the editor Dear Editor, For 18 years I have lived in Marietta, 1 was raised and am employed in Mari- etta. On Sunday, December Sth the Marietta Restora- tion Associates held their annual Candlelight Tour. The Mount Joy Jaycees are selling a limited edition (185 copies) of Mount Joy commemorative mugs. The mugs match the recently issued plates. Of the 185 plates pro- duced, 30 are still avail- When this event occurs, not only are the streets of Marietta crowded, but a certain group that attend this tour are disgusting. My philosphy is to each his own, but when I see two men walking down the street showing affection to each other it turns my stomach. It was also said that Marietta now has a gay bar. What’s next? Is this why we have a Gay Street? Anti-Gay able. The Jaycees have issued the mugs and plates to commemorate their 25th anniversary. The limited edition should soon become collector’s items. Profits from the sale + Mount Joy Jaycees selling mugs support community projects like Santa’s visit, the 75- plus Banquet, the Miss Mount Joy contest, DSA, etc. To buy a mug or plate, call Bob Stoner at 6S3- 4395, or contact any Jay- cee.
