Born and raised in Ostro- wiec, Poland, she was molded by World War II and the events preceding it. Her parents, Abraham and Yenta Malach, and extended family were all killed in the Holocaust, except one of her three sisters. Esther survived by subter- fuge, masquerading as a Chris- tian maid. She helped sustain her sister, Hinda, and brother- in-law, both in hiding, by steal- ing food and delivering it to them clandestinely. After the war ended, Esther met her husband, William “Willy” in a displaced persons camp in Austria, where they later married. Her husband was also a product of the events of World War II, having survived the misery of various ghettos and concentration camps. He escaped by jumping from a train enroute to the gas chambers near the end of the war. Esther and Willy immigrat- ed to the United States, where they experienced the Ameri- can dream — working together, raising a family and enjoying all of the freedoms this country offered. They reveled in the success of their children. While Willy only saw the be- ginning of the next generation with the birth of his first grand- child, Esther cherished the warmth and happiness of all four grandchildren. In every sense, they outlived those who attempted to not let them live. Surviving are her son, James, of Norwich, N.Y; daughter Judie Panneton, of Sacramento, Calif.; four grand- children; her sister, Hinda Ma- lachi, of Israel.
