Sunday, September 25, 2005 S CH 0 0 L THE POST PAGE9 GATE OF HEAVEN ICE CREAM SOCIAL THE SWEET SCIENCE OF SCIENCE Students at Wyoming Seminary Lower School are learning that there's more to a Twinkie than meets the eye - or the taste buds. Students in Jill Carrick's sixth grade science class recently formed groups to make observations of the sugary treats. They also immersed the Twinkies in beak- ers of water for follow-up analysis. The ex- ercise is an eye-catching and mouthwater- ing approach to teaching kids about the sci- entific method. Students were given strate- gies for organizing their notes and observations. Science is sweet for Alex Ko- lessar of Shavertown, above, who resists the urge to consume, not study, a Twinkie in the class. More than 200 people attended the annual Gate of Heaven School ice cream social, which was held on the school grounds on Machell Avenue in Dallas. Students from the school, along with family members, teachers and friends, enjoyed a variety of ice cream. Proceeds from the event benefit the school. SCHOOL BRIEFS session on financial aid.
