Sunday, October 31, 2004 Tue POST 1 Church & Community PASTOR’S CORNER Msgr. J. Peter Crynes St. Therese’s Church Feasts reinforce o {11e meaning of ® Chistian faith The celebration of the Feasts of All Saints and All Souls signifies our entry into the har- vesting time of the church year. The church highlights, at this time, the wonderful wit- ness of those women and men who have gone before us in faith to live their lives in gracious and grateful appreciation of the love of God. This season continues throughout these last weeks of the church year, as we move toward the powerful feast of Christ the King. For all of us who are disciples of the Lord Jesus, that feast will signal and highlight the ultimate essence of our lives, as they are lived in total and complete obedience (“gra- | cious listening”) to the great Lord and Master, Jesus the Christ. The relationship we have established with Jesus the Lord and Teacher determines our lives and the choices which we make in our lives. These two very powerful moments of memory, recalling the great acknowledged saints of our church tradition, as well as hose unsung and yet so faithful members of our family and our parish, give us cause to reflect upon the quality of their lives, the choices which they made out of their com- mitment of discipleship. All the saints in our lives, those we have come to know through our church tradition, as well as those we have known throughout the lived experience of our daily lives are such a magnificent gift to us. They model the lifestyle upon which we have been reflecting through our reading and praying of the Gospel of Luke. They show us how to enflesh the call and the challenge of the invitation of Jesus to “come, follow me.” The call to “take up our cross and follow” is reinforced in the story of the committed love of each of these women and men who have gone before us. How easy it is to appreciate their heroic lifestyle when we have the example of our own relatives, friends and fellow parishioners to exemplify and characterize the sacrificial experience of discipleship. We are a church community; as a commun- ion and community of saints, we support and acknowledge the effort each person makes in responding to this call of discipleship. The church marks these two great feasts not out | of some melancholy affection, but rather as a way to teach us to find and affirm in each | other the effort at discipleship. Thus, will each of us find in the life and times of our sis- ters and brothers, a powerful impetus to find meaning and strength in our own relation- ship with Jesus the Christ. \ - Brown Baggers at Shavertown UMC The second Tuesday of each month several retired friends gather for lunch at Shavertown United Methodist Church, 163 N.
