Almost 15 percent of the more than one million students who took AP Examinations in May, 2003, performed at a suf- ficiently high level to merit such recognition. Students take AP Examina- tions in May after completing challenging college-level cours- es at their high school. The College Board recognizes sev- eral levels of achievement @: on the number of year- ong courses and exams (or their equivalent semester-long courses and exams). Five Seminary students qual- ified for the AP Scholar With Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. Shaver- town residents Eric Feinstein and Sarah Killian, both 2003 graduates, earned this distinc- tion as juniors and seniors. Six students qualified for the AP Scholar With Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on AP exams tak- en and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of those exams. Leah Budin of Trucksville who graduated in May, 2003, re- ceived this distinction as a sen- ior. Fifteen students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by com- pleting three or more AP Ex- aminations with grades of 3 or igher. The students collected more than 6,500 cans for a total of 5,000 pounds of food plus donated $893 in cash. Any student enrolled in grades 9-12 in a public, private or parochial school, or home- schooled in Pennsylvania is eli- gible. The top of this year’s contest is, “What is Patrio- Entries must be be- tween 600 and 1,000 words in length. Entries will be judged on quality of writing, originali- ty, accuracy and extent of infor- mation. Students must certify that essays are prepared with- out assistance other than that provided for all members of the class. Each local school will choose a winner, which will be submit- ted to the Daddow-Isaacs Post 672, Dallas. The winning entry from the Post will compete with others from around the state, with a state finalist cho- sen Local school officials and fac- ulty are working with the Le- gion and will assist with con- test arrangements. Home- schooled students are also wel- come to enter. Entries in the local contest will be accepted until the third week in January, 2004. The state winner will receive a $3,500 college scholarship and a trophy. The second-place winner will receive a $3,000 scholarship and trophy, and third place will win a $2,500 scholarship and trophy. The American Legion also will pay the expenses of the state winner to attend the 2004 Pennsylvania American Legion convention in July, to read his or her essay.
