12 The Post SCHOOL Sunday, December 14, 2003 Wild about school lunch Recently the Lehman Jack- son Elementary School's cafeteria held a color con- test entitled “Wild About School Lunch” in recogni- tion of the National School Lunch Program. Each grade was given a different animal in which to color. At the end of the contest, 14 students were awarded prizes for their winning entries. The winners were, from left, front row: Drew Brandi, The College of Engineering at Penn State University has re- cently approved a new concur- rent Surveying and Civil Engi- neering degree. This 5-year program will allow students to earn a bachelor of science de- gree in Surveying and Civil En- gineering. Its graduates can be- come licensed both as a profes- sional land surveyor and pro- fessional engineer in all 50 states. “By obtaining both degrees, graduates of this program ex- pand their career opportunities New Surveying/Civil Engineering degree at Penn State Wilkes-Barre by being able to function more flexibly in engineering and sur- veying firms where both areas of expertise are often in de- mand,” said Dr. Charles D. Ghi- lani, professor of engineering and Surveying program chair at Penn State Wilkes-Barre. Students enrolled in this pro- gram will spend three years at Penn State Wilkes-Barre, then finish their final two years at the University Park campus. King receives scholarship from Cedarville Shavertown native Ashleigh Elizabeth King has received a Faculty Scholarship at Cedarville University (Ohio). " Cedarville University awards Faculty Scholarships to first year students who have high ACT /SAT scores and a cumula- tive high school grade point av- erage of 3.0 or higher. This one- time scholarship ranges from $1,000 to $1,800. King, a senior at Dallas High School, has received the Rotary Leadership Award and the Cu- mulative “A” Average Award. She received varsity letters in basketball, field hockey, and soccer. She is the daughter of Robert and Donna King of Shavertown. Youth chess club forms A newly formed group of chess players, the Smart Alekhines, a scholastic chess club for children ages 5 through 18, meets Saturdays in the com- munity room of the Back Mountain Memorial Library from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. No fees or dues are required. Interested persons are asked only to bring their own chess- boards and pieces. Level of play is from beginner to expert. Practical play and instruction will be directed by certified chess instructor George Trent, who has coached many young area state champions: Erick and Gregory Sam, Jim Nessler, Smith Collins, Ashwini Naran- jan, and Christopher Liman and four PA state chess champion teams (K-6). Hillary Schaub performs at Marywood String festival Hillary Schaub, a seventh-grade student at Dallas Middle School, recently was selected for and performed at the Mary- wood Honor String Orchestra Festival, held at Marywood University, Scranton. She is a violin student of Jule Sipler at the Supplee School for Strings in Kingston. Reddy honored at Penn State Wilkes-Barre John Reddy, head of the busi- ness program at Penn State Wilkes-Barre, was recently named Penn Stater of the Quar- ter, announced Dr. Mary E. Hines, campus executive offi- cer. The Penn Stater of the Quar- ter is a member of the campus community who has uniquely demonstrated special concern for the campus community, has achieved a significant honor or goal that benefits the campus, or demonstrates special dedica- tion to the mission of the cam- pus. Despite the fact that he was already teaching a large section of business students this past summer, Reddy worked with 15 students for independent study - without compensation. He also offered an independent study option for adult students enrolled in the business cur- riculum who could not attend classes during the day because of their work schedules.
