The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, September 27, 2000 11 Knights notes "Donora Hillard é Greetings. My name is Donors Hillard. I am a senior at Lake- Lenman High School who has been summoned by the literary gods to tell you what life is like from a teenage perspective. Please donot pigeonhole me; this column will not be an adolescent rant about how much I love nail polish and hate physics. In fact, you just may find that my thoughts mirror your own, regardless of where you are on the sphere. I invite you to crawl into my head, look around, and observe a life. Stay awhile. Speaking of being pigeonholed, I have observed that it isn’t very often you bear about a teenager who isn't involved in sports or drunk driving. In this hectic and often cruel world, it is refreshing to meet someone who is caring and morally grounded. That be- ing said, I give you Dave Hage. Dave is also a senior at Lake- Lehman, and one of my good Uriends. He is unique because he is one of the few people, let alone teenagers, who can honestly. say that Christianity is the staple of his life. An active community volun- teer since the age of 15, Dave ® decided to get involved because of Breaking the student stereotype his strong religious foundation and genuine love for other people. He is always on the go, helping outat his church (the Back Moun- tain Harvest Assembly), Catholic Social Services and the Luzerne County Housing Authority dur- ing the summer. In addition, he is an avid musician, playing the guitar both on his own time and in his church band. With such a busy and varied schedule, it is a wonder how Dave remains so or- ganized and motivated. He says it's because “I just love to help people and try to help them over- come the trials and tribulations of their lives,” Dave helps out spe- cifically in this area by counseling peers, which he learned to do from his mentor, Pastor Robert Coscia. With counseling, Dave usually asks the person ques- tions to assess the situation and see whether it falls within his realm of knowledge. If so, he will assist the person himself. But in extreme cases, such as threats of suicide, he refers the individual to a higher authority. After high school, Dave plans to obtain a degree in social work, as well as a pastoral degree. The influence of people like him serves to make a positive and potentially groundbreaking impact on the community. He is a source of pride to my generation. As he would say, see you at the pole.
