The team is comprised of high school juniors and ~ seniors from 13 different high schools in Northeast PA. Evans and ~ Ehlis are both seniors at Dallas High School, the only school with multiple players represented. Both players made the team through ~ a series of tryouts conducted in late August. The team travels every weekend in September and October to various showcase aaiiie sais tt baseball tournaments in the East. Trips this year include the Jersey Shore Showcase; the Roanoke, VA Valley Fall Classic; the Lehigh Valley Harvest Fest; the Tidewater Fall Showcase in Norfolk, VA; the Eastern N. Carolina Showcase in Raleigh; and the Long Island Fall Classic. These tournaments are played before college coaches and Major League baseball scouts. Both Evans and Ehlis play for the Dallas High School team and the Back Mountain American Legion team. Evans is a pitcher and outfielder and Ehlis is a pitcher, first-baseman and outfielder. Parents of the players are Tom and Jane Evans of Shavertown and Paul and Terry Ehlis of - Shavertown. Harry Nelson of Moosic coaches the team. STORM team Aerio at fair The S.T.0.R.M. Nate Hoffman's second straight shutout was earned by making three saves. Dallas 10, Hanover Area 0 The Mountaineers scored five times in each half to complete a week in which they outscored their opponents 17-0 in defeating Hanover Area on Saturday. For the second time last week, Ricky Branco contributed to five goals in ‘a single game. This time he scored three and assisted twice. Dallas was the recipient of two penalty shot goals quickly into the second half as the Hawkeyes’ frustration grew. Those were con- verted by Branco and Terry Ruger. Ruger’s breakout game included a pair of goals and two assists. Defender Tim Faneck scored un- assisted in the 22nd minute and assisted on the first goal of the game, which was scored by senior John Isaac in the seventh minute. Ryan Rother tallied a pair of goals in the contest. Eric Baltimore scored the final goal. GIRLS TENNIS Dallas 6, Seton Catholic 1 The Mountaineers took three of the four singles matches to earn their second win of the sea- son, a 6-1 decision over Seton Catholic. Brooke Blase, Erin Coo- per, and Joey Kupstas each earned straight set singles victories to give Dallas three early points. Seton Catholic forfeited in two of the doubles matches to clinch the team win for Dallas. Blase won at #2, 6-3, 6-3, Cooper at #3, 6-2, 6- 3, and Kupstas at #4, 6-0, 6-0. The doubles win came from Karmela Conte and Gabrielle Huh 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Coughlin 6, Dallas 1 Coughlin defeated Dallas 6-1 on Thursday afternoon in girls’ tennis action. The Crusaders cap- tured all four singles matches in making the doubles competition irrelevant to the outcome of the match. Dallas got a win in doubles at the number two position from Erin Cooper and Jen Toth. They won their match 6-2, 7-5. Those were the only sets that Dallas was able to win in the entire match. CROSS COUNTRY Lehman 18, Wyoming Area 45 The Black Knights captured seven of the top ten positions in handling the Warriors of Wyo- ming Area. Kelby Morgan and Ryan Post took the top two posi- tions, finishing 18 seconds apart. After Wyoming's top finisher took thrid, the Knights took positions four through eight. T.J. Dougherty, Brian McMahon, Marty Schmitt, Mark Kapral, and Chuck Kopetchne took these spots in the win. 5 A GOLF Lehman 166, Berwick 179 Josh Baranowski's 40 won medalist honors at Huntsville. Justin Boyer and Ryan Spencer each shot 41, Derek White had a 44. Dallas 156, GAR 177 Kyle Tomek shot 37 to lead the Mountaineers at Hollenback. Jared Karalunas followed with a 39, Dan Laurenzi and Kevin Piekara shot 40 each. Lehman 171, Hazleton 183 Scorers all within four shots of each other led the Black Knights to a solid win over Hazleton Area on Thursday. Consistent scoring provided the 12-shot margin of victory. Justin Boyer led the way with a 41. Josh Baranowski was right behind at 42, and Dustin Kapson was one stroke behind him. Luke Kasper closed out the scoring for Lake-Lehman with a 45. Valley West 160, Dallas 187 Wyoming Valley West easily handled the Mountaineers in golf action last week. Pat Barnard was the low scorer for Dallas, completing the day with a round of 42. Kyle Tomek and Jared Karalunis followed with 47’s, while Kevin Piekara was fourth with a 48. GIRLS VOLLEYBALL North Pocono 2, Lehman 1 The Knights won the first game easily by a 15-4 score, but N. Pocono came back to take the second 17-15, then the third 15- 4. Kari Maskalis led Lehman with 12 points, seven aces, three kills and 16 digs. Melissa Sutliff had 24 digs, seven blocks and three kills; Nichole Felwell had 19 digs and two kills, and Christine Hudak had 20 digs. Lake-Lehman 2, Coughlin 1 The Black Knights won a three- game thriller Thursday afternoon on theroad. After pretty dominat- ing splits in the first two games, the teams played a very competitve third game, going down to the wire. Lake-Lehman took the first game 15-5 before Coughlin took the second 15-6. The final game was a closely contested one, with Lehman emerging victorious 16- 14. Kari Maskalis was the big server for the Knights, nailing four aces. She added eight blocks up front. Sarah Davis also had four aces in the contest. Christine Hudak added three aces and eight digs. North Pocono 2, Dallas 0 North Pocono knocked off host Dallas Wednesday afternoon. Af- ter a relatively easy first game, North Pocono was challenged a little more in the second half by the Mounts, but still hung on to take the match in two. Scores were 15-4, 16-14. April Piazza (four service points) and Kristen Vodzak (5 blocks and three kills) led the Mountaineer cause. The Lehman defense held Nanticoke to just one shot. Trail 2, Dallas 1 After a scoreless first half, Trail found the net twice early in the second period, then held off the Lady Mountaineers. Amanda Coleman scored the Dallas goal, assisted by Carrie Strasser. Trail dominated the shots and corners, while Melonie Sappe recorded three saves in goal. Lake-Lehman 11, G.A.R. 0 Lake-Lehman completed domi- nated G.A.R. in every aspect of the game on Wednesday, as the Knights won in convincing fash- jon 11-0. = Terri Peiffer scored three goals, including the first two of the game in the first five minutes, to lead the way. Colleen Mahon also had a big day, scoring two goals and assisting on an- other pair. Lisa Wasser found the net twice and assisted on an- other. Joanna Oliver and Meredith Edwards each added two goals, with Edwards also contributing two assists. Ellen Young, Lindsey Boris, and Joelle Lussi each fin- ished the game with two assists. The shutout was a combined ef- fort by Janel Janiczek and Tracey Hudak. Dallas 3, Nanticoke Area 0 The Mountaineers used three first-half goals on Wednesday to cruise to a 3-0 win. Keeper Melonie Sappe made six saves to earn the shutout in goal. Kate Benedetti scored the second and third goals of the game after as- sisting on the first. That was scored by Molly Savage in the ninth minute. Savage then re- turned the favor for Benedetti, assisting her goal four minutes later. Benedetti’'s second goal came off a pass from Jackie Hardwick in the 26th minute. Lake-Lehman 2, Dallas 1 (OT) Lisa Wasser scored eight min- utes into overtime to give Lake- Lehman a road win in the battle of the Back Mountain high schools played on Friday. Maureen White registered the assist on the game- winner. White earlier scored the game's first goal, scoring in the ninth minute from Colleen Mahon. Dallas then answered in the sec- ond half when Molly Savage took a Daisy Neiman pass and put itin the back of the cage. Keepers JanelJaniczek and Melonie Sappe made several outstanding saves in net to keep the game as low scoring as it was. FOOTBALL Dallas 24, Coughlin 14 Friday night Dallas defeated Coughlin by 10 points to move to 3-1 on the season. A 17-0 lead after three quarters gave the Mountaineers a commanding lead. Sophomore Ryan Gryskevicz was 9-12 passing for 102 yards and a touchdown. His one-yard rushing touchdown was the first scoring of the game. Later he threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Jason Race to give Dallas a 14- O halftime lead. Race’s 20-yard field goal accounted for the third quarter scoring. Race was 3-3 on extra points in the game, as the Mountaineers gota third touch- down from A.J. Harris in the fourth quarter. He scored on a 59-yard run. Coughlin’s two touchdowns were too little, too late. Berwick 42, Lake-Lehman 6 The Berwick Bulldogs domi- nated Lake-Lehman by a score of 42-6. A 35-0 midway through the third quarter enabled mighty Berwick to rest many of its start- ers for this Friday's big game with Wyoming Valley West. Lake- Lehman's record dropped to 1-3 with theloss. Josh Kuwaye scored Lehman's only touchdown, a one- yard run in the fourth quarter. The conversion failed. Fullback Joe Shurmaitis earned 58 yards rushing on 13 carries.
