10 The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, August 9, 2000 i ~ Scenes from the Wilkes-Barre Triathlon Local athletes competed in one of the oldest continuous events in the United States when they ran, biked and swam in the 19th Wilkes- Barre Triathlon on Aug. 6. The event, hosted by Penn State Wilkes- E Barre at Lehman, drew athletes who wanted to swim in Harvey's Lake LB and bike and run across hilly terrain in the Back Mountain area in the : quest for a share of the $5,000 prize money. In addition, a health and fitness expo was held in conjunction with the triathlon, featuring health, nutrition and fitness presentations, and a one-mile run was held for children ages 8 to 13. First man out of the water was Corey Welch, a member of relay team AJJ, which also included Joseph Boyd and John Maskalis from Trucksville.
