Born Nov. 11, 1959 in Newark, NJ, he was a son of Joseph and Ruth (Grapski) Yurko, with whom he resided. He had resided at Harveys Lake for the past 27 years. He was employed by Mountain Stream Construction in the Pikes Creek section of Lake Township. He was a member of Our Lady of Victory Church and the Outlet Sportman’s Hunting Club, both at Harveys Lake. He was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas P. Surviving in addition to his parents, are his brother, Joseph M. Jr., Georgetown, TX; sisters, Patricia B. Ruger, Thornhurst; and Donna L. Yurko, Noxen; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great nephews. Interment, Mount Olivet Cem- etery, Carverton section of Kingston Townhip. VIRGINIA ROAN Virginia L. (Llewellyn) Roan, for- merly of Harveys Lake and Shav- ertown, died April 3, 1999, in Oviedo, FL. Born Aug. 3, 1928, in Plymouth, she was the daughter of the late Albert B. and Marian Durbin Llewellyn. She was a graduate of Plymouth High School and Edgewood Park Junior College in Briarcliff Manor, NY. While residing in the Back Mountain, she was associated in business along with her husband, Andrew F. Roan, and son, Andrew F. Roan Jr. She was a member of the Shav- ertown United Methodist Church. She was active with the Shav- ertown Fire Company Auxiliary, Ladies of Kiwanis and scouting organizations. She was preceded in death by her brother, Albert J. Llewellyn. Surviving are her husband, Andrew F., Oviedo; sons, Andrew F. Roan Jr., Harveys Lake; Stephen Roan, Dalton, GA; daugh- ter, Mimi Asby with whom she resided in Oviedo; sister, Marilyn Jones, Harveys Lake; six grand- children; four nieces, one nephew; great nieces and nephews; two aunts. Private funeral services were held Wednesday, from the Hugh Jones Funeral Home, Kingston with the Rev. William Kennard officiating. JOSEPH ROGOWICZ Joseph R. Rogowicz, 44, of Kingston Township, died April 3, 1999 at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. : Born: June 29, 1954, in Nanticoke, he was the son of Martha Strozeski Rogowicz of Lake Silkworth and the late Joseph Rogowicz. He was a graduate of John S. Fine High School in Nanticoke. He was a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Wilkes College and he graduated from Stonier Graduate School of Banking in 1987 and PBA Central Atlantic School of Commericial Lending. / He began his career in banking ~ atFirst Eastern Bank in 1972. He served as senior vice—president and was in charge of the bank's credit policy and loan administra- tion unit. He most recently owned and operated Rogowicz Consult- ing in Plains Township. He also served as adjunct instructor for Marywood University, Wilkes Uni- versity, Luzerne County Commu- nity College and the American Institute of Banking. He was a past board member of the Economic Development Coun- cil of Northeastern Pennsylvania and the Huntsville Golf Club. He was also past treasurer of the American Cancer Society, Wyo- ming Valley Unit. He was amember of the Luzerne County Business and Industry, the Wyoming Businessmen'’s As- sociation, Robert Morris Associ- ates., the American Institute of Banking, the President's Society of King’s College, the Irem Temple AAONMS, the Shriners, the Irem Golf Club, the Royal Orders of Jesters #154, Lodge 395 F&AM in Kingston and the Westmoreland Club where he served as trea- surer. He was a member of St. Therese’s Church, Shavertown, where he served as chairman of the Finance Committee. Surviving in addition to his mother, are his wife, the former Karen Szychowski; sister, Theresa Byczek, Lake Silkworth; two nieces and one nephew. A Memorial Mass will be at 4 ‘p.m. Wednesday in St. Therese’s Church, Shavertown, with Mon- signor Peter Crynes officiating. Private interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Town- ship. Friends may call after 5 p.m. Wednesday at the family home in Kingston Township. CLETUS HOLCOMB Cletus “Sandy” A. Holcomb, 49, formerly of Sweet Valley, died April 4, 1999 at the Hospice Commu- nity Care Inpatient Unit of Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre. Born July 22, 1949, in Kingston, he was the son of Kathryn Jean Ballantine Holcomb of Sweet Valley and the late Cletus L. Holcomb. He resided in Sweet Valley for most of his life. He moved to the Meadows Nursing Center, Dallas, six years ago. He was a member of the Maple Grove United Methodist Church, Pikes Creek. Surviving in addition to his mother, are a brother, Gene Holcomb, Sweet. Valley; one niece and three nephews. Interment, Maple Grove Cem- etery, Pikes Creek. MARIAN KENNEDY Marian J. (Jones) Kennedy, 83, of Newberry Estate, Dallas, died April 3, 1999, at the Wilkes-Barre. ' General Hospital. Born Dec. 2, 1915, in Wilkes- Barre, she was the daughter of the late John Henry and Delhia Roderick Jones. She was a graduate of GAR Memorial High School and Wilson College in Chambersburg. She was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Dallas. She was also a member of the Westmoreland Club, the General Hospital Auxiliary and the Visit- ing Nurses’ Association Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard E. Kennedy, Esq., former solicitor for the city of Wilkes-Barre; sisters Alice McCormack and Dorothy Jones. Surviving are her sons, Attor- ney John H. Kennedy, Harveys Lake; David R. Kennedy, Montandon; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 11 ‘a.m. Thursday from the Harold C. Snowdon Funeral Home, 140 N. Main St., Shavertown, with the Rev. Mark Harper officiating. Interment will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Hanover Township. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. THEODORA GREY Theodora L. (Lubinski) Grey, 84, of Forty Fort and formerly of Harveys Lake, died April 3, 1999 at her home. : Born June 12, 1914, in Ross Township, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Rosalia Trynaski Lubinski. She resided at Harveys Lake most of her life before moving to Forty Fort two years ago. She was employed by the former Native Textiles in Dallas, retiring 10 years ago. She was a member of the Demo- cratic Women’s Club and the Outlet Bible Tabernacle of Harveys Lake. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leland Grey; broth- ers, Jack, Adam and Valentine Lubinski; sisters, Blanche, Mar- garet, Josefa and Viola. Born Dec. 20, 1917, in Wilkes- Barre, she was a daughter of Julia (Yanosky) Balucha of Dallas and the late John Andreuszkiewicz. She was a graduate of Coughlin High School in Wilkes-Barre. She had been employed for a time by the Social Security Ad- ministration in the Wilkes-Bare office. She was a member of St. Therese’s Church in Shavertown. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward F.; sisters, Jeane Brown, Evelyn Fetterman and Eleanor Andreuszkiewicz and brother, John. . Surviving in addition to her mother, are her daughter, Frances Bednar, Millbrook, NY; son, Ed- ward R., North Kingstown, RI; four grandchildren; sisters, Florence Loftus, Parma, OH; and Bernadine Martin, Lansdale; sibblings from a subsequent marriage, Dorothy Haydu, Colonia, NJ; Marie Tomascik, Swoyersville; Frank Balucha, Kingston; Steve Balucha, Wilkes-Barre; numer- ous nieces and nephews. Gate of Heaven won special - honors at the annual Pennsylva- nia Junior Academy of Science competition held at King’s College March 6. More than 700 students from 44 schools participated in this annual event. Gate of Heaven received the trophy for having the highest percentage of first award winners. Seventeen of 20 partici- pants received first awards and won the opportunity to present their projects at the state compe- titions in May. Special recognition was given to Morgan Carey, eighth grade, for. her project titled “Is One's Taste Affected by the Knowledge of the Brand Name?” She performed her task with the help of 3rd, 5th and 8th grade orange juice tasters. She received a perfect score and the Junior High Behavioral Sci- ence excellence award. Nora Stepanitis also received a perfect score for her project, “Which Sur- faces in the Rooms of Your Home Promote the Most Bacteria and Mold?” Other first award winners who will be traveling to Penn State in May are seventh graders Blake Bradley and Dorothy Cashore, and eighth graders Liz Ambrose, Gen Blanc, Jill Durr, Molly Guntli, David Lohin, Paul Mentis, Adam Onzik, Elise Persico, Courtney Reap, Susan Ruotolo, Daniel Suhocki, Alison Taroli and Kristin Wagner.
