Do @ wv \ \ The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, August 5, 1998 11 This + Bristol-Myers Pat Rosenthal wins National Merit Scholarship Competition - Recent Wyoming Seminary graduate Patrick Rosenthal of Shavertown was announced a winner in the 43rd Annual Na- tional Merit Scholarship Competition, of- fered by the Na- tional Merit Scholarship Corporation of Evanston, IL. $2,000 award, spon- sored by the PATRICK ROSENTHAL Squibb Company, was one of only five given nationally. Rosenthal, son of Bruce and Beth Rosenthal of Shavertown was named as a winner on the basis of his performance on the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Exam, in which over one million high school students participated in 1996. Also considered was Rosenthal’s exemplary academic record, personal accomplish- ments, contributions to schooland community, PSAT/NMSQT and SAT] scores, a student essay, and the recommendation of Wyoming Seminary. Rosenthal was a high honors dean's list student, having main- tained his high average while tak- ing three Advanced Placement college courses in his senior year. In addition, he played trumpet in Sem’s orchestra, was layout edi- tor and wrote for the school news- paper, the Opinator, and was a member of the Model United Na- tions team. He has won numerous awards and honors during his high school career, including being named to the Cum Laude Society, receiving the Lindsley Morgan Washburn Prize in Mathematics, the President's Education Award, the Frederick Rudolph Prize for His- torical Writing, the Wyoming Semi- nary Model United Nations Award, Advanced Placement Scholar Award, National Latin Examina- tion honors, and was named to the Who's Who Among American High School Students. Lions present book scholarship The Dallas Lions recently awarded their annual book scholarship to David Williams, an honor student and graduate of Dallas High School. Millington attends medicine forum Segan Millington of Dallas recently participated in the 1998 National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine in Washington, D.C. Segan, in the class of 1999 at Dallas Senior High School, was among 350 outstanding high school juniors and seniors from across America and around the world who have attained the qualifications required to participate in the Forum. Segan was selected because of her outstand- ing academic achievements and her interest in the profession of medicine. Young Scholars from Back Mountain Three students from the Back Mountain recently attended a two- week Young Scholars Program at College Misericordia. The program, titled “Explorations in Mathematics and Biology,” enrolled 25 high school students from Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts. The students conducted experiments in biology and math and learned how the two fields are related. They also visited Temple University’s School of Medicine, the Fox Chase Cancer Center and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. The Young Scholars program is designed to encourage female and minority students who are interested in math and science to pursue college degrees and careers in the sciences. The program is sponsored by College Misericordia, the Dorr Foundation, the USF&G Foundation and the Eastman Foundation. Patricia Hinchey promoted to associate professor at PSU Penn State Worthington Scranton has announced the pro- motion of Patricia Hinchey, Ph.D., Dallas, to associate professor. Dr. Hinchey graduated cum laude from Wilkes University with a B.A. in English education and an M.S. in En- glish education. She earned her Ed.D. in English education from Teachers Col- lege, Columbia University. Prior to join- ing ‘the Penn State Worthington Scranton fac- ulty, Dr. Hinchey was assistant chair of the Department of Lan- guages, Literature, and Social Studies at Columbia University’s Teachers College in New York. While at Columbia, she worked closely with renowned English educator Lucy McCormick Calkins to direct field experiences and master’s programs in English edu- cation. PATRICIA HINCHEY She has also previously served as instructor of English at Penn State’s Worthington Scranton Campus and Wilkes-Barre Cam- pus, College Misericordia and Luzerne County Community Col- lege.
